Re: Big Ten Standings after 1/25, Top 6

I looked up the tie breaking procedures for the B1G tournament (I an assuming that the Mens rules' linked above, apply to the Womens tournament as well.

Basically similar to Big East.

Tie between 2 teams goes to head-to-head results

Tie between multiple teams creates a "mini-conference" with the best results there getting the highest seed.

There is a long way to go but the lost to Ohio State doesn't help us.

Tie-Breakers

Re: Big Ten Standings after 1/25, Top 6

Nice analysis. I think a key point is that if RU wins all of its games against non-top 6 teams, it's likely to move up regardless of what happens in the Nebraska and Maryland games (although obviously it's better to win them both, too, which probably would guarantee 2nd place).

Re: Big Ten Standings after 1/25, Top 6

Now a five-way tie for 3rd place among us, Nebraska, Ohio State, Minnesota and Michigan. As listed in the tie-breaking procedure, we would need to have the best record against the 4 other teams in the tie. We are currently 2-1 with games against Nebraska at home and Michigan away remaining.

Re: Big Ten Standings after 1/25, Top 6

Want to be a top 4 seed in the conference tournament. Gets you a bye until 3rd round. Then need to win three for the championship.
If 5 seed through 10 would need 4 wins in a row for the championship.

First round: a play in type round to get down to 12 teams
Then a typical 12 team bracket.
12 vs.13
and 11 vs.14

Second Round:
12/13 winner vs. 5
11/14 winner vs. 6
8 vs. 9
7 vs.10

Third round:
(12/13 vs. 5 winner) vs. 4
(11/14 vs. 6 winner) vs. 3
8/9 winner vs. 1
7/10 winner vs. 2

Fourth round
If the seeds hold 1 vs. 4
and 2 vs. 3

Fifth round is the championship

Being a 1 or 2 seed means your first conference tournament game will have you a big favorite
as the opposition is at best the 8/9 seed and the 7/10 seed, respectfully. Would be a big upset not to get to the semis.
Tougher as a 3 seed as you could face a 6. And tough as a 4 as you could face a 5.

Re: Big Ten Standings after 1/29, Top 6

Yes, Northwestern could and did take down the Gophers.
Minnesota drops out of the log jam.

Nebraska and Rutgers tied for third at 7-3
Ohio State could join the 7-3 third place tie with a win tomorrow.
Very important that Rutgers take down the Huskers
if we want one of those top four seeds in the conference tournament
as the loss to Ohio State works against us in tie breaker scenarios.

Also would be great for Stringer to take the all time Big Ten number of wins record
in an important and meaning full game..

Teams around us in the AP Top 25 had a rough week:
#21 Georgia lost to #10 Kentucky. 0-1 for the week.
#22 Rutgers 2-0
#23 Syracuse lost to #8 Louisville. 0-1 for the week.
#24 Oklahoma lost to #14 Texas and to West Virginia. 0-2 for the week.
#27 Minnesota lost at Northwestern. 1-1 for the week

Other top 25 teams with loses this week
#15 Nebraska, #18 Mississippi State, #14 Texas, #12 Texas A&M,
#20 Iowa lost to #5 Maryland.

Re: Big Ten Standings after 2/1, Top 6

If the team wins out (hey, why not?), they finish no worse than 2nd, assuming the tie-breaks are the same for the women as the men and assuming Maryland doesn't collapse. (It gets complicated if Maryland ends with more than 3 losses, but that seems unlikely.)

As much as I dislike Maryland, it would certainly be interesting if Maryland and Rutgers were to finish 1-2 in the B1G.

Hey BeK, even if we win out, and Iowa wins out, and Maryland wins the rest of their games except the remaining match-up with us... wouldn't that result in us being 3rd at best?

Maryland: 17-1
Iowa: 16-2
Rutgers: 15-3

It seems we'd need Iowa or Maryland to lose more games if we're going to be finishing 2nd, unless I'm missing something?

Re: Big Ten Standings after 2/1, Top 6

I had it in my head that there was another game against Iowa, but there's not, so you're right. We'd actually need Iowa to lose two games or for a 3-way tiebreaker to play out in our favor.

Re: Big Ten Standings after 2/1, Top 6

Assuming Maryland takes the top position, there probably won't be a big difference between number two and three as far as seeding goes. We want to avoid number 4 as well as anything lower.

I hope we will all remaining games, may not beat Maryland, and must avoid traps or playing down to a team's level.

After Thur. 2/5 games we could be as high as tied for second
or as low as tied for fifth.

After Thur 2/5
.............................................................next game................other games
............................................................Sunday 2/8................this week

1. Maryland..........20-2....11-0.............Nebraska...................Rutgers
2. Iowa.................18-2.....9-2..............at Wisconsin..............at Nebraska..............Indiana
3. Rutgers............17-5.....8-3..............at Michigan................at Maryland...............Purdue
4. Nebraska.........17-5.....7-4..............at Maryland................Iowa
4. Ohio State........15-8....7-4...............Indiana......................Michigan....................Illinois
6. Minnesota.........17-6....6-5..............Michigan St................Wisconsin..................at Penn St
6. Northwestern....16-6....6-5..............Illinois.........................at Purdue..................Michigan
6. Michigan...........14-8....6-5..............Rutgers.......................at Ohio St.................Northwestern

9... Wisconsin........8-13....4-7
10. Indiana............13-9....3-8
10. Purdue............10-12..3-8
10. Illinois..............12-11..3-8
13. Michigan St.....11-12..3-9
14. Penn State.......5-18...2-10

Minnesota upset by Illinois Thur 2/5.

Many teams play three games next week including Rutgers with Sunday, Tuesday + Saturday
Short turnaround with AWAY on Sunday and AWAY on Tuesday. That doesn't seem fair.
No other team has that. If you are going to play two games in three days at least one should be home.
Maryland has HOME Sunday and HOME Tuesday.
Ohio State has HOME Sunday and HOME Tuesday.
Michigan has HOME Sunday and AWAY Tuesday.

Re: Big Ten Standings after 2/5

The margin of the Illinois win over Minnesota is shocking...95-69...that's 26 points.
We beat the Gophers by 5 at home.

Re: Big Ten Standings after 2/5

Illinois has a center that could play on the OL

but yeah a lot of these teams seem to pour it on and blow their opponents away, not sure why RU has such a problem doing that even when they look in complete control

Re: Big Ten Standings after 2/5

Illinois is an incredibly dangerous (wins vs Kentucky, Iowa, Minnesota) but incredibly inconsistent team. The win over Minnesota snapped a 7 game losing streak--including a home loss to Wisconsin. Let' s just say I'm happy we are playing them at home.
