He didn't put in the bets. He had someone else secretly put them in for him. I think it's naive to believe that someone who would do this wouldn't eventually bet on or against his own team. The urge for an edge doesn't escape most gamblers.
Between the waiver (that had little chance of being approved), the achilles injury recovery and now the gambling news/suspension, it’s clear there is no upside with this guy. Move on, dump him and eventually use that scholarship on a recruit or portal player.
He is charged with a misdemeanor of underage betting. If you think that this isn’t rampant among students (both athletes and non athletes) you are naive. Sports betting is a huge industry right now. These charges are no different than underage drinking.
Not a good look and obviously the due diligence on this kids recruitment was not where it needed to be. I guess this more prone to happen when scrambling for kids to fill out a roster, but why take a chance on a kid who is coming off a significant injury and needs an unlikely waiver to contribute if there is any background questions unresolved? If the 24-25 season was the focus for the decision, it would seem like you could have easily found a similar caliber hired gun in the transfer portal at the end of next year.
Rationalize this all you want but this gets to issues regarding the integrity of the game.

That's how UNC got away with their no show classes for the athletes...invite the general, student population to enroll.

And if he was high school/travel teammates with friends at other colleges that he bet on? Easy way to get in cahoots, throw games and make some cash. When there's a will to make money, people will find a way. Legal or illegal.
Its going to get worse too. Sports betting advertisements are everywhere. It's awful. You are going to see young kids get addicted at a crazy rate in the next few years.

Has it been confirmed that anyone at RU asked Williams if he has bet on sports while a NCAA student-athlete?
If I read the NCAA gambling rule correctly, he'd have to sit out the upcoming season.

It would sting RU more if he wasn't recovering from an injury, had immediate eligibility and was a projected starter.
Do like the big boys, just ignore it. Don't give them a word to print and let it just die away. Football seasons about to start and everyone will be talking about that. No one besides the media (local rags) are going to get their balls all twisted up over a kid betting 15 times for a total of $1500 bucks. You made a mistake; serve your suspension by time he plays the media won't be able to scrutinize a second chance.
Some athtletes are so hopelessly addicted to gambling they turn to loan sharks for gambling money. If they fell seriously behind, the mob would convince them to pay off their debts by shaving points rather than having their legs broken. That is why the NCAA and colleges prohibit athletes from gambling on other teams.

Agree with you completely, I still don't know what he actually did, but ppl here don't want a guy if they did anything remotely bad.
