Going to Lake Tahoe South in about two weeks to spend four days with my brothers and our wives. We've booked a fishing trip, and we like the casinos.

Other recommendations? We are all in our 60's, so hiking up a mountain isn't likely. Wives really like shopping and we all like restaurants. Might take in a golf course, but none of us will have brought clubs.

Thoughts?

You don't have to hike up a mountain to have a great hike. Last week I ran to Dardanelles Lake, which is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. About 3.5 miles each way and there were many families with small children making the hike. Eagle Falls and Eagle Lake are much closer, right by Emerald Bay. Gazillions of other great accessible trails.

Golf = Edgewood. Right on the lake, behind the casinos, and is the location of the celebrity golf tournament.

You'll have to specify what kind of restaurants you are looking for but here are a few with a view: Friday Station on top of Harrahs. Need reservations. Edgewood. They have a fancy restaurant and also a sports bar. Restaurant needs reservations in advance, far in advance if you are booking around sunset. Sports bar not so much. Riva Grill, at the Ski Run Marina (doesn't need advance reservations). Boathouse (on Timber Cove Pier). Jimmy's (fancy greek restaurant at 5 star hotel near Edgewood). Beacon (very casual). Off the Hook (sushi, etc in Tahoe Keys). There are others but if you are looking for something else, then please say what you are looking for. There are many options.

The Heavenly Gondola runs between 9-4 and stops at an observation deck before continuing to Tamarack Lodge. From Tamarack there is zip lining, nature trails, rope courses, etc.

Assuming that you are coming from NJ, the wives will be disappointed with shopping options There are tons of touristy shops around Heavenly. There are more options in Tahoe City so you can make a stop if driving around the lake. Tahoe, as a while, will never be known as a shopping destination. I do much of my shopping on Amazon. Basic box stores are in Carson City and Reno. Not convenient.

I live here so am available to questions and comments.

Wife and I spent our 10th anniversary in South Lake Tahoe. Stayed at Harrah's, ate most meals at restaurants in the hotel. The gondola to Heavenly is great. There's lot's of shops and galleries for the wives. Take a boat tour around the lake, it's a beautiful trip with a couple of stops that have breathtaking views.

If you feel like driving out of town both Reno and Virginia City, NV are about an hour away. Four days is a long time in Lake Tahoe if you're not into outdoor activities. Casinos are small and somewhat limited.

I enjoyed swimming and sunbathing at the Lake. The water is clean and crystal clear. I also recall a dinner cruise on a boat tour of the lake that the wives enjoyed. Enjoy.

Have a fun, safe trip Skillet.
My family and I are on our way to Switzerland for 15 days tomorrow.
Without thinking I agreed to this being a "tech free" vacation, but after realizing it coincides with the start of camp I convinced my wife I need an hour a day to follow our team.
It just wouldn't be right if I didn't get to gawk at the size and muscles of the guys on reporting day!

Wow, great info Dave! My three brothers will be coming from Akron, Atlanta, and Oakland. I'm coming from the south end of the South Island of New Zealand. We have one small mall in Dunedin and the anchor store is Kmart, so we'll take about anything in terms of shopping!

Moms Skillethead and I really like hikes if they don't involve the potential of falling off a mountainside (actually, that only bothers me, but it bothers me a LOT).

In terms of dining, Moms and I are a bit on the cosmopolitan side (20 years of commuting into NYC and working at the Met), but my bros are more large meat and fries guys. We also really like quality wine, beer and spirits, if there is anything like that there?

Thanks again,

Skillet

And to you, Zap! We vacationed once in Pontresina and really loved it. Today is our 18th anniversary, and at the ripe old age of 65, it's really dawned on me that events, travel, memories, are way better to collect than stuff (although I do like my stuff).

One of these days I'll get to Jersey and come visit you at the Museum!

My food recommendation is rosti. Rosti and sausages. The Swiss really know how to do that!

Have a great time! (What will the board do for two weeks without our witty and insightful commentary?!)

The Tahoe is a great vehicle but if you don't REALLY need all that room to haul stuff, you should really consider a Honda Accord.

When I bought my new V6 Honda Accord last week in FL I have to admit that the thought ran through my mind of " What would 4Real think about this ?"

Truth be told, there's nothing really wrong with the V6 Accord. The drivetrain is actually quite good. From an enthusiast's perspective the steering is a bit on the numb side and the chassis setup is oriented toward comfort rather than performance, as befits Honda's target demographic. But it's a perfectly good car and has great acceleration.

used to go to lake Tahoe every summer--always loved to take the full car ride around the lake--it takes a while

The only problem with Pontresina is that it is actually walkable to St. Moritz, where Moms Skillethead can really let her shopping genes realize their full potential!

Love Lake Tahoe - went there for a week in two different winters in the mid/late 80 for skiing and skied every major mountain around Tahoe - this was my first trip out West to real mountains and I discovered that the black diamonds in PA/NY/VT were not the same as the ones in Tahoe, lol. Didn't kill myself, but some of those runs were challenging when I was a 25 year old "advanced intermediate" skiier.

First year, we got 5 feet of powder over the first two nights - I was in heaven as I had never skied powder before and it was just amazing (lost a ski for 30 minutes once - didn't know about tassles to find skis in powder) going in the bowls and off the cornices (not huge jumps, but 10-15 foot drops). Barely gambled at all that week, since the skiing was so good. Went 2 years later and the snow sucked, so spent a ton of time gambling. That's what's so great about Tahoe vs. most other ski resorts. Haven't been back since.

The only thing I could offer is that the paddleboat ride across the Lake was pretty cool, from a sightseeing perspective. Enjoy!
