It was not unusual for colleges like Pittsburgh, Navy, Columbia, Princeton, Temple, NYU and others to play Rutgers in an annual spring game or an exhibition pre-season contest or two. One such game was Rutgers meeting Pennsylvania at Hershey, PA on September 15, 1960 as reported in the previous day’s Sunday Times of New Brunswick.

The first "spring practice" was reported on in the 1873 April Targum, "The University Nine and College Eleven have been out at different times trying their muscle and getting good appetites. The Nine are anxious for good weather.” Since the football teams at the time were 20-man teams, Rutgers probably had football defections over to the baseball team 142 years ago.
