Rutgers football adds FCS team with famous head coach to future schedule

To me, breeding and raising dogs to fight and kill each other is right up there with the worst of the worst crimes.

For a human to be able to do that to dogs, you need to have severe, severe issues.

Personally, I would never want my child to be led by someone who has done what he has done.

I understand other people have different opinions, but again, personally, I would never be able to support a team or allow my child to play for him.

Here is a reminder:

The report also states in mid-April of 2007, Vick, Peace and Phillips hung approximately three dogs who did not perform well in a "rolling session," which indicates the readiness of a dog to fight. According to the report, the three men hung the dogs "by placing a nylon cord over a 2 X 4 that was nailed to two trees located next to the big shed. They also drowned approximately three dogs by putting the dogs' heads in a five gallon bucket of water."

Did he pay his time?
21 months in prison—-is not enough time in my opinion for what he did.

Is he remorseful?
Who knows.

Does he have a right to earn a living? Of course.
Did Ray Rice ‘do enough time’ for his crime ? Be consistent. Is 21 months more than 0 months ?

Here is the reality on "running an offense ".....

Here is my question

Where is the recruiting evaluation in this process ? How did we not know that Jalen miller, Derek Simpson , Jwill, Jmike and Jordan Derkack coukd not shoot ???

And how did we get Jaden Jones, Antonio Chol, Gavin Griffths, PJ Hayes and Zach Martijni….players who really can not do much on either end other than shoot (and none really hit it well here )????

It’s a recruiting iaaue
It’s a talent evaluation issue
And
It’s very likely a lack of NIL issue

If you take Dylan and Ace OUT of the class of 2024 and 2025, we broke the bad recruiting trend …and have a nucleus to stert the build over again next year

But this only will work if we
-restrain the class of 2024 and 2025 (moat at least )
-continue to add pieces from the class of 2026 and 2027 …that continue to have 2-3 players in the top 150 each year
-and not miss on evaluation on players as often.

-it’s recruting , development and retention …

Pony up or Shut Up

Hey y’all, been a long minute but Terps fan here. Feel like I need to make an important distinction from the OP here — all three of those guys mentioned have been integral in MD’s success this year, but none of them commanded some crazy NIL deal. In fact, this is way more a product of strong scouting and roster construction than it is offering the most NIL.

- Gillespie was the “big one” and the most coveted, but even his NIL deal was reported at 375k/year when he signed. Not cheap by any means, and also not the most expensive by any means.
- Rice averaged 7.7 ppg in 8 games his freshman year and hadn’t played a competitive basketball game since literally March of 2023 when he committed to MD.
- Miguel was a later portal addition and chose MD over the likes of Ole Miss and Villanova to name two, both who have noticeably deeper NIL pockets than Maryland does.

TL;DR — of course NIL mattered for the Maryland shooters, but by no means did they have to break the bank for them.
Cliff was the most we’ve ever paid and he got $200K, as far as I know. Alabama paid him $1M only for him to play a reduced role.

We needed a Gillespie but just didn’t have the resources to land someone like him. The transfers that yall brought in were astute additions. Not looking to break the bank. Just trying to raise enough to be competitive. Right now we don’t have enough to be competitive, and that needs to change, if we want to be competitive.

In regard to Vick doing his time etc…

There are pedifiles who have done their time and they are not allowed to teach our children. No matter how great a student they were themselves and qualified for the job.
What he did to defenseless dogs is not just a heat of the moment type of thing. He bred dogs to die for entertainment. That mindset is not something that just gets better. And even if it does, the fact is, he did it. He just should not be a leader of young men.
Maybe if he does well at Norfolk State he'll be in line for the Rutgers job when GS retires.
He paid for his crimes.

Men’s Lacrosse Headed to No. 12 Army Saturday

Hopefully I'm not breaking any rules, but this game reminded me to raise awareness of one of my favorite lacrosse related charity organizations. It's Shootout for Soldiers. The do lacrosse events to raise money to support veterans. As ex-Army and a lacrosse fan, it's of course one of my favorite organizations.

Last year, my son and I went to the event on Long Island. They had a game of veterans vs first responders then the 2nd game of NYPD vs FDNY. Was awesome. Vets out there on the field with prosthetic limbs giving the first responders a run for their money (told my son, next time I say I'm too tired for the gym, going to think of the vet out there sprinting up and down the field on a prosthetic leg).

Also, the NYPD lacrosse team is basically a pro-team. Easily 40 deep and they destroyed the FDNY.

Circa 2004-2005 Navy did an Army-Navy alumni fundraiser at their stadium. The captain of either the 2000 or 2001 Army lax team had lost a leg below the knee in Afghanistan and was put there playing on a prosthetic leg. Amazing.

Here is the reality on "running an offense ".....

Well, yes, but the starting premise of your post is to count up made threes.. but only by guards that play a lot of minutes. So in your world it's not a problem if primary guards force up a lot of threes but it is a problem if other players force up a lot of threes? Why?
If a player plays 5 to 7 minutes a game and hits 7 threes for the season, is that an effective way to determine whether the offense he plays in, is effective??

The 3s are a measurement in terms of "running an offense", so it makes sense to focus on the players for the B1G teams, that play the most minutes.....Its not as if adding back PJ Hayes 16 3s from the guard position, is somehow different than a reserve guard on Iowa or Penn State who makes 10 to 12 for the season.

The players who play the most minutes, impact the offense we run. I'm not sure why this is deemed "mental gymnastics ", it's just focusing on the players who play 80% to 90% or more of the minutes over a 40 minute game.

If I broke the data down to "made 3s per minute played", that would not be determining if the offense is effective.....I could easily say Derkack generates offense because he is able to drive and draw fouls.

It is very difficult to run any offense unless the guards have the ability to dribble, pass, shoot from 3 and score at the basket AND that player has to be a willing defender on the other end of the court.

The JMike post I made a week or so ago, highlighted that he is 13 for his last 31 from 3 point range, since the Princeton game (about 12 to 13 game stretch)..

That is a very good 3 point percentage, but the %, only impacts the offense, if he can maintain close to that productivity, with double or triple to shot attempts. That allows him to become a complete guard, IF he plays solid defense and can knock down FTs.

Not getting the analogy . Is your child currently or will be a top flight high school football player that would be offered a scholarship or roster spot at at an HBCU?
If so, congrats

OT: 2025 NY Jets Off Season Thread

I would take Tyrod Taylor for a year or two over Ewers or Howard. They are not close to be starting QBs in the NFL. Taylor has a decent arm and can move. Ewers is limited, Howard is a better athlete but neither will be more effective than Taylor over the next 2 years.
What, if any, QB in the 2025 draft the Jets might be able to gram in the 2nd round ( or later) do you or anyone else think might help solidify the position after sitting for a year to develop into an NFL QB.
I was thinking of Kyle McCord but he folds under pressure and I'm not sure that can be changed
ND's QB Leonard might be a good gamble, but his game really doesn't impress me as a passer. but putting in his running ability with it he might be worth it for the Jets to draft in the 2nd round or later
Kurtis Rourke did a good job for the Hoosiers and might be a steal in the 3rd after siting and learning for a year
Jaxson Dart would be a good pick but not at #7 and I doubt he makes it past the late 1st round
Donovan Smith of Houston is another one to consider and if available in the 3rd round might be worth a shot
My 4-5th round choice would be Louisville's Tyler Shough his age (25 coming out of college ) and multiple stops before making his mark at Louisville makes me feel he's worth taking in the 4th or 5th but not earlier.
I also feel the FA QBs available don't deserve a long term contract , so one year to show their stuff and then make room for the one drafted in 2025. ( or Travis if fully healthy )
Taylor might be a good place holder but not one that will make the fans happy with the way the team plays all year long .

Pony up or Shut Up

This season is the epitome of all things Rutgers. We finally get a unreal recruiting class (of freshman), when it matters the least. The extra covid year + NIL pay for play has really made freshman recruiting not as important as it used to be as it pertains to winning and making it far in the tourney. Both Ace and Dylan are no doubt talented, but that doesn't mean they don't make freshman mistakes. Look no further than the Kentucky Calipari teams that were even more talented with consecutive top 5/10 recruiting classes with one and done's and 1st weekend exits from the tourney.

I don't think Pike is a horrible coach, but he isn't elite either. He needs to make adjustments in how he recruits in this new NIL era and all the uncertainty around it to really get Rutgers over the hump. Can he do it? We'll see as we're not getting rid of him with the years left on his contract.

We got ace and dylan but we didn’t get anyone else who can consistently contribute. Latham and Grant are freshmen who are acclimating. The transfers for the most part have been busts.

Pike needs money to make the adjustments you wanted to see. Without money, we are unlikely to see the success we desire. Luck isn’t a viable strategy, and that is essentially what we are depending on when we take lower level kids and hope their ability will scale to this level.

could have made all the adjustments you wanted to see and we still wouldn’t have won enough because there isn’t enough talent.
