These young receivers and former high school teammates making big impact for Rutgers football

Not too long ago Ian Strong and KJ Duff were starring at St. Anthony’s High School on Long Island.

Now they’re in Rutgers football uniforms, establishing roles within the Scarlet Knights offense and becoming go-to weapons for quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis.

Weather for RU @ MD: Looks Seasonable and Dry

Almost a lock for a seasonable dry day, even this far out, given the continuing mostly dry, progressive pattern. High temps look to be around 60F, which is seasonable given a typical 11/16 spread of 59/38F, and temps will likely drop down into the mid/upper 40s by the end of the game. Right now, it looks to be dry from Friday through Sunday, but we should probably wait a day or two to consider dry weather being a lock. Thinking about going to this one.

The first College Ultimate Frisbee Game

The first College Ultimate Frisbee Game was played between Rutgers and Princeton at Rutgers in New Brunswick, New Jersey on November 6, 1972 with Rutgers winning the game 29-27. The game, organized by Irv Kalb, was scheduled for a different date, but was rescheduled to coincide with the 103rd anniversary of the two universities playing the first inter collegiate football game on the same grounds.

OT: NFL games in Australia?

Man, I feel like this is a Bridge Too Far situation.

NFL prioritizing expanding international series to Australia, pondering holding Pro Bowl Games there in future

Despite a time difference larger than any other lands currently being explored by the league -- Sydney is 16 hours ahead of Eastern time now but 14 hours ahead in September -- the NFL is eager to get to Australia for a regular season game.

WBB - a few notes

I know there’s a women’s basketball board, but I think this would be of interest here. If you’re not interested, don’t read any further and forgive the intrusion.

WBB is 3-0 thus far, and I’ve watched most of the three games. Granted they were playing mid-major competition, but this team plays a very exciting, run and gun offensive style that is the polar opposite of CViv’s all defense/no offense style from the last 10 years of her tenure. Very fun team to watch if you don’t mind the somewhat porous defense. (Greene Rice FIG, look away, man, look away).

Destiny Adams is a walking double-double, and is dominant in the paint. She has back to back 30 point games, and today she had 36 points and 22 rebounds.

5-star freshman Kyomi McMiller is absolutely ELECTRIC. She occasionally gets out of control and makes boneheaded plays, but she has an incredible handle, crossover, and acceleration, and has a great mid-range game. She can get herself a bucket seemingly whenever she has an inch of space. You have to live with the bad because the good is… INCREDIBLE. There are THREE super 5-star players playing at the RAC this year, folks.

Chyna Cornwell is a rugged Center (believe she was a 4 or 5 star when recruited by CVS) and is an absolute rebounding machine, and also is pretty adept at scoring in the post.

There are some good players in the supporting cast too.

There are two smaller, quicker guards in Mya Petticord and Lisa Thompson, and they both provide good depth and can push the pace of play and also hit from deep.

The biggest portal addition is Boston College transfer (but NJ native) JoJo Lacey. She averaged 12 ppg last year, and is a 6-0 foot wing who can shoot from deep. Really good complementary piece to pair with the exciting quick guards and the post play of Adams and Cornwell.

Finally, true freshman Zachara Perkins is a 6-1 guard/wing who has an all-around game. She is trusted to bring the ball up on offense, and is pretty good in the paint.

Point guard Ayo Sidibe is not back from her season ending injury from last year. I think we will need her at some point to play defense.

Coquese Washington did a good job assembling this roster. I wish there were more shooting options (3-pt shooting will likely be a weakness), and I don’t know yet whether they will be better than a .500 team with the way they play defense, but at least they will be fun to watch. And Adams and McMiller will keep us in most games.

Excellent Fonseca article on the SPP win and nice insight from Geo at halftime...

Fonseca wrote a nice article on the St. Peter's win. I especially liked how he framed it as a great game to learn from, as it was close, but we didn't blow it and the last 4 minutes showed how good we can be with great defensive/rebounding intensity with the game on the line, as we closed on an 11-0 run, not giving them any easy shots. It's behind a paywall, but I added a nice excerpt from the article, below.

Two hours of suffering on Monday could lead to euphoria two months down the line.

That is one of the main takeaways for Rutgers after it survived a scare from Saint Peter’s in a nail-biting 75-65 victory at Jersey Mike’s Arena. The No. 24 Scarlet Knights (2-0) had to fight tooth-and-nail to defeat the Peacocks (0-3) — who battled Seton Hall and UMass Lowell down to the wire last week and nearly derailed Rutgers’ dream season before it got off the ground — and they are better off for it.

The hosts trailed for the final eight minutes of the first half, facing a 5-point deficit at the break. Steve Pikiell’s team took control with a 20-6 to start the second half, but Saint Peter’s responded with a 15-5 run to retake the lead. The teams exchanged the lead three times in the subsequent 94 seconds, with the Peacocks going ahead by one point with 4:07 to play. Then the Scarlet Knights shut the door on their visitors, closing the game on an 11-0 run, forcing Saint Peter’s to miss its final eight field goal attempts and three free throws.

With that, a team with nine newcomers — four transfers and five freshmen — learned a valuable lesson about itself.

And here's the Geo halftime tweet. Maybe it's obvious that Pike wouldn't have been happy with the D in the first half, but as per the tweet and what Geo said in the post-game show, having been there with Pike for 5 years, he knew what Pike thought about the poor defensive effort and absolutely knew we'd see improvement in the 2nd half. Also liked his comment about this being the best offense we've had in awhile. I don't listen to the games on the radio though - how is he doing? I like his post-game comments.

$9 tickets available for tonight's game

If anyone was scared off by all the talk of these non-conference games being "sold out," there are plenty of $10 tickets available in the 300s for tonight's game.
They're being sold for $3 and $4 but with fees it's $9 or $10.

Very little doubt there was some Rutgers-led shenanigans with the allotment of these tickets that backfired.
