1. Rutgers defense came to play in the first half. Very impressed with how they played before getting worn down by PSU. It is SO hard to keep defensive intensity when the lead keeps growing and growing because your offense can’t do anything.
2. For a coach who’s known for his focus on discipline and special teams, this team is horrible in both those areas. Outside of Adam Korsak this season, our special teams have been a huge letdown. Penalties once again were a problem, but not as big of one as in the past few weeks.
3. While I thought Gavin took a big step forward last week at Michigan State, he was really bad against PSU. He set the tone for a long day missing 4 wide open receivers in the 1st Q, giving up golden opportunities for points when the game was competitive.
4. I don’t know how Greg can look back on the 2nd half of the season and decide to give Nunz the OC job. Since he took over for Gleason, Rutgers offense has averaged 13 points per game. Rutgers needs to hit a HR at OC and while Nunz has a chance of being a decent OC, it’d be foolish for Schiano to tie the program to an unproven guy who hasn’t shown much as a playcaller when given the chance this year and in 2019.
5. Rutgers needs to HAMMER the portal this year for skill position players (WR/TE). We obviously need more in the portal (safety, OL, iDL, backup QB, etc), but WR/TE has to be the #1 priority. Chris Long and Rashad Rochelle have shown flashes, but other than that the program has no pass catchers who you can be optimistic about based on their play on the field right now.
6. Rutgers has now lost 4 games by 30+ this season. With teams like OSU and UM, who are currently in the CFP field it’s more understandable. But there’s no reason we should be getting dominated by an average Minnesota team or a PSU team decimated by injuries. Schiano needs to take a long look in the mirror to figure out why this is still happening in year 3.
7. Football is the only thing holding back this athletic department right now. We’re seeing almost every program making massive strides other than football. The results need to start coming and fans are at their wits end patience wise. Rutgers NEEDS to pull an upset at home over a ranked team/big program next year. There has to be hope to point to, because right now it’s a very hard sell.
8. Very excited for basketball to take my mind off this football season
