Can Anyone Confirm That Brower Is Closing?

While it may be true that some students prefer the grab and go, my son(Freshman HC) and his friends hate it. They often take the bus to other campuses to get dinner, both because there is more variety in the food as well as they prefer to sit at a table somewhere else than their dorm lounge.

OT: I-695 Francis Scott Key Bridge Collapses

The only person suggesting 3 additional tugs were needed beyond the 3 already escorting/assisting it is Konrad. Every other source says it was just the 3 that were normally deployed, which makes sense. https://www.ntd.com/large-container-ship-loses-propulsion-near-new-york-bridge_984671.html...

So the Kill van Kull is where it lost propulsion according to Coast Guard, which isn't really all that close to the Verrazzano bridge. And as noted, it was being escorted by 3 tugs since the Kill van Kull is only like 800 ft wide...

Underground seattle tour was really cool and you will spend half the tour thinking they are just making it all up. Next time out I would recommend it.

No bridge is going to survive having one of its two support piers destroyed. The fact the bridge dropped after the support pier collapsed isn't a design flaw and you can't design a bridge that would survive that(at least one that we could afford to build). The fact that the ship was able to...

It could be, but would require the local harbor pilots to be in on it. Just cutting the power on the ship doesn't give you a high probability of hitting something that actually matters. And if you are going to do something like cut the power, why not start a fire/sink the ship or better...

yeah, but it looks like wood, and I wouldn't bet on wood vs 100,000 ton cargo ship. But I could be wrong about what the barriers are made of...

Difference is that one was a glancing blow along side whereas it looks like Dali was a direct hit. Also to me it looks like the tip of the bow(sticking out in front of the underwater portion of the ship) struck the slender above water concrete pier and buckled that, so a small fender system...

Yeah, I don't know how often it would be a problem on other bridges, but certainly might be on this one. Suspension bridges often have longer spans so the piers wouldn't be as close together or as close to the channel as here. So likely just impact older truss bridges. Here is another bridge...

OT: I-695 Francis Scott Key Bridge Collapses

Problem is if you do that, then the useable channel under the bridge can get narrowed so much ships can't fit. Keeping mind that island of stone has to reach to the bottom of the river/bay, and a pile of stones isn't vertical and alot less than 45 degrees (been 30 years since my civil eng...

Yeah, no way even 18 months. Even if they have a fully developed design(for that specific location) with all of the surveying already done(the soil/ground conditions under the piers are incredibly important in large bridge design), and are ready to start construction tomorrow, it still won't be...

OT: I-695 Francis Scott Key Bridge Collapses

Not quite true. There are small dolphins on either side of the two main piers. However, they are too far away from the bridge and likely too small to stop a ship this size. Not clear if they were part of the original 1977 construction or added later. You can see 3 of them clearly in this...

You mean harbor pilot, but even when a pilot is on board, the captain is still in charge. Anyway, we are taking a joke comment way too serious.

No self respecting naval officer is going to say a civilian captain (especially a foreign one) is any good :)
