“I Got Rutgers Into The Big 10…. 90 Days Later They Fired Me.”

Quite the yada yada from TP.,,

He hired 2 coaches that set both major programs back in a tremendous way.

And he could have forced the video issue with Rice and didn't.

Flood was an epic disaster.

We would have gone to the B1G if the AD was my pet rock. That was determined in 2006 if not before.

Whatever people want to say about Mulcahy, Hobbs and others, and there are things to say, they at least advanced the major programs. Julie really didn't have the chance to leave her mark for better or worse. Pernetti did not.

Where do you get any of that from what I am saying? I said earlier I am not defending Tim. He had oversight of coach and as others have said his offices were in that building. So Tim knew of directly or heard rumors of alleged impropriety. Tim owns both the hiring and firing of Rice. But Barchi delaying the firing process makes him culpable as well. As you say the blowback took him out. Media ate the delay up and claimed it was a cover up. It was Rutgers Rutgersing once again. Play like the big boys. Either say it’s nothing and move on or admit Rice was a problem and fire him immediately without delay.

Also board approval is a formality in the hiring process and doubt they would be involved in firing. But board was involved in this case because it blew up because Barchi delayed the process.
So you agree that it was appropriate to fire Tim but you also wanted Barchi out. Sure, but it usually doesn't work that way. If Barchi's sole job was the athletic department, maybe. But it's not at all surprising or unusual that the AD and not the President took the hit for Rice.

I mean he would have been fired with Flood probably but the rest of it.

If he had not been fired, I wonder if things would have turned out differently with Flood. Julie basically undercut him since the moment she was hired.

I find it implausible that the crazy crap was happening with Rice and he didn't know, but would have known about the Princeton library, drug tests and robberies.

He was a nice guy but I think he was in over his head.

I don't know. A lot of that happened 2 years or so after Pernetti was fired. I think that Flood lost someone he could depend on who had his back and could provide him guidance in navigating at least some of those situations. I know Flood bent over backwards to try to help some players (<cough. <cough> Nadir Barnwell <cough. <cough>): having someone like Pernetti above him who could have advised him to cut these players loose would have gone a long way in avoiding these problems. Again, this is just supposition by me based on things I've heard and on my own personal experience straying into management. Regardless, everything I've heard is that because of the headwinds he was experiencing Flood just stopped caring at some point.

Umm…you must have forgot the 2012 season . Flood was blowing games and setting the program back when Pernetti was the AD.

When did Julie actually “undercut” him? Before or after his secondary got arrested? Before or after flood got himself suspended ?

It may be that Barchi (who was still fairly new and who was focusing on the medical school issues he had been hired to solve) told Pernetti, "OK, you and Wolf should figure it out," and that Barchi ultimately decided their decision was causing so much of a black eye that he had to fire both of them. I'm sure you've seen a C-suite person delegate a decision and then reverse it. There are so many possibilities here.
Agreed. That’s why I say Barchi is culpable.

Always thought Julie looked like Jack Palance

Shortly after she got hired - during the 2013 season she was trying to get donors to step up to buy him out.

As she should have. If you watched the 2012 season you could tell flood was a dud

The 2012 season? Where we went 9-4 and tied for our best record in the Big East at 5-2? Where we tied for the conference championship?

The pernetti lovers here are truly an interesting bunch . It’s mind boggling. Even if you say Ok , he had to hire flood because he needed a cheap coach (kinda goes against the theory that pernetti was working so hard and knew he was going to get us into the BIG 10 months later and the big payofff)…he whiffed on the rice hire and management…let’s say ok it happens. Pernetti probably whiffed on the Murdock situation. (We don’t know this , but in all probability yes ). His fundraising stunk.
So even if you want to give Tim a pass on all that…
Pernetti also was banging the drum to keep hill jr. after 4 seasons as the HC and 1 season as an assistant !! Pernetti actually believed hill jr. had the program in good shape ! Hill was 47-77 overall and 13-57 in the Big East (that is a .186 winning percentage )! Pernetti was going to bring back hill jr for a 6th season at Rutgers until the Pitt baseball coach thing !! The guy had no eye for coaching talent in his time at Rutgers . Fact

flood dug his own grave...she didnt undercut anything...his level of support cratered among donors and she was trying to find a way out of his mess...unfortunately rutgers beat usf to make a bowl game...people forget how truly awful that season was

remember the credit card scandal and the library bullshit..thats on flood and oh failed drug tests swept under the rug with dr monaco

Yeah, that season was truly awful, but part of the the reason was the revolving door of assistant coaches because the salary pool was so piss poor. I've never gotten the details, but during halftime of the Houston game there was a huge blowup in the locker room between the coaches.

Yeah, but that all happened in 2014 and 2015 when he stopped caring and started cutting corners. I think Barnwell who I mentioned earlier was the nexus of that whole library bullshit - what kind of knucklehead fails dance or theater appreciation, whatever the hell the course was.

Oh, and the credit card scandal happened under Ash, not Flood.

Paraphrasing Pernetti: make no mistake about it, Rutgers to B10 was a media deal. Adding the BTN to NY basic cable meant half a billion/yr more to the B10.

Says it all.

GO RU

Exactly.
And some still say "Big 10 took a huge risk on Rutgers. They threw us a life raft. There was no possible way we could have asked for better entrance terms. We had no leverage."

According to TP we had half a billion/year in leverage.

Still waiting to hear who the alternatives were if Rutgers asked for a more equitable agreement and the Big Ten said no.

Wasn't there another event under Flood that year? I could be wrong..maybe it was the drug testing

But that's his problem if he stopped caring and proved he should have been tossed when Julie first got here...and TP made a mistake hiring him

And yes Julie was her own mess to and needed to go

The fight, plus one of the DB's was involved in a ring that was ripping off drug dealers. That was summer of 2015 leading into the first game, where they staged the publicity stunt to arrest all of them 3 days before the 1st game. In addition, you had the whole mess with Leonte Carroo and his sidepiece falsely accusing him of assaulting her. Plus wasn't there the issue with Ian Thomas who acted like he wanted to play baseball or something like that?

Barchi was throwing everyone under the bus regardless. Barchi and counsel told Pernetti not to fire Rice but suspend him. Then reversed course and fired Tim for not disobeying those orders.

Not defending Tim just hate cowardice leaders like Barchi.

100% as remembered it.

I have no real opinion about Pernetti (no opinion on whether he was a "good AD" or not as I just dont know/ remember enough)

... but he got screwed.

totally thrown under the bus in such an obvious and cowardly way.

then they bring in Herrman. the process by which they hired her rubbed me the wrong way (didnt hire the most qualifed/ got bullied into taking her).

THEN, she displayed a total lack of backbone (eg, apologizing to Penn State).

IMHO that was a pretty dark period - just GUTLESS leadership from all angles of RU "leadership"

I was so disgusted I tuned away (as much as I could LOL) from RU sports for a few years (including this Board).

My biggest issue was always when we joined the other schools were making X dollars, and we got a payout schedule based on that. Then shortly after joining, the other schools got a significant bump, and our payout did not change.

Not sure it was a false accusation, just seemed a deal was struck. It was a knuckleheaded move leaving the Hale Center to get involved with that.

The assault charges were dropped after the alleged "victim" refused to testify.

So he should have gone 13-0? He was a first time HC and made some mistakes but we haven't sniffed 9 wins since.

Should have went 10-2 with a crappy HC in the regular season …that defense had a lot of Schiano NFL players
