You'd really have to ask the donor whether he/she would have made the donation to Rutgers, to UMDNJ, to neither, or to both, if the merger didn't happen.


But since the donation is being used within the Cancer Institute of NJ, which was not part of Rutgers prior to the merger, on the surface it appears that Rutgers would not have received this donation without the merger.
 
It's also possible that UMDNJ would not have gotten it. Perhaps the Rutgers takeover gave the donors more confidence in how the gift would be used (although the CINJ has generally had a strong reputation). No matter it's great news for RU and cancer research
