How appropriate that after Rutgers 21-3 loss at Brown the Daily Home News ran this story on Halloween morning of 1916, “On Saturday morning Coach Sanford selected the ball room of the Narraganset Hotel for signal practice, the floor being covered with carpet. The ballroom was closed to every one except the coaching staff and the team but the practice had no sooner started than a big black cat ran out in front of the team. ‘I would have given $1,000 if that cat had not put in an appearance in such a manner,’ remarked Trainer [Jake] Besas later. The team then had lunch and got aboard a special trolley to go to the field. They had no sooner gotten on board, than the trolley jumped the track and some of the overhead wires dropped to the street. After a delay, the players were forced to get into taxicabs and go to the field. The luck that followed the team on the field needs no review at this time.”

Since the start of intercollegiate football in 1869 Rutgers is 10-8-1 all time when playing a game on Halloween.

Everybody be safe out there today on the streets and behind the wheel. Happy Halloween!
