On November 3, 1908 Rutgers defeated Franklin & Marshall 9-0 at Neilson Field in New Brunswick. Charles Corbin made a 40 yard drop kick, one of the longest drop kicks that season and in Rutgers football history.

The football took on its sleeker, more pointed, look for the 1934 season and the drop kick fell out of favor in the game. But it still exists in the rule book as a legal play.

The last known successful drop kick at Rutgers was a 15-yard field goal by halfback/kicker Arnie Truex in the November 17, 1934 game against NYU at Nielson Field. His fourth quarter drop kick gave Rutgers a 16-7 lead on route to a 22-7 win. The last known successful drop kick against Rutgers was by quarterback/kicker Joe Murphy who scored 13 points in a 14-7 Maryland win at Baltimore Stadium on November 21, 1940 including a drop-kick of the final point.

Drop kick is similar to a kick in aussie rules fb. In a punt the ball is snapped to the punter whom then kicks it. In a drop kick, the kicker has the ball directly in his hands, drops the ball and connects with it with his leg.

You drop the ball out of your hands (behind the line of scrimmage) so it hits the ground at the proper angle. Then you follow through with your kicking foot and make contact when it hits the ground or bounces up. The kick then carries the same rules for scoring as a placement kick.

I hear the fans complained that without numbers they couldn't tell who was playing but the kids thought those unis were sick so they kept using them. Things never change around here.
