2 Areas Need to Improve to compete in Vegas

Assuming all continues as it has through 4 games, 2 distinct areas jump out to me as needing improvement for next week to be competitive.

  1. DEFENSIVE POSITIONING/ROTATIONS: Someone already noted this, but this squad so far appears to equate defense with steals. We see way too may gambles with no help behind, or more relevant, not much concept of WHEN TO GO FOR THE STEAL, notably when there will be help to cover. Steal attempts with no backside help have been a regular occurrence. Defensive rotations are thus part of this issue. With newcomers, especially freshman, this concept takes time and we are seeing it. Defense is being played by INDIVIDUALS and not as a TEAM, and that has been the issue. From memory, it appeared that Martini is the only one to date who has appreciated the team D concept and rotations/positioning. The good news: If you need a coach to instill D concepts, we have it. The issue is whether these concepts can be grasped and put into effect before or at Vegas, or whether this will be something down the line.
  2. SHOT SELECTION: This has been a real issue, and not surprising with so many newcomers, and especially freshman. This is also something we should expect to get better, but to compete next week, it will need to be improved. To note, the freshman are the main issues, and considering the level of competition, their talent has overcome any issues. Better teams may not allow that to happen. Somerville has been a pleasant surprise in so many ways, and a player that can be built around. That being said, he needs to be careful about becoming a "black hole". In the last few games when the ball has gone in to him, the first thought I said aloud was...it's not coming out. And it hasn't. Noticed that movement mainly stopped too when the ball went in to him. That needs to change. Bailey and Harper-they appear antsy when not shooting soon enough. Ace had one forced shot off the side/top of the backboard he appeared to take because he had not had the ball much to that point. Harper similarly forces drives when he doesnt see many shots for a period. To be expected with freshman. TO BE CLEAR, they should take the same or more shots than they did last night. BUT look how successful it was for Ace when it came mostly in the flow of the offense. The key or Pike is to get them to move and look for shots within the flow. Derkacs too. He has been excellent in effort, individual D and a good deal of passing/distribution a la Mulcahy. But he can easily fall into lower level bully ball he could do against smaller and less talented teams. That wont work in the B10. He needs to continue to distribute and not fall into trying to muscle up drives, and let the offensive flow work. Shot selection was always going to be hard on a team led by freshman with so many newcomers. BUT the pieces may be there for it to work. Hayes and martini have shown good spot up efforts at times-the ball just needs to go in AND out. Williams needs to be figured out how to be used in a flow as to date it's been strained. Do expect shot selection to get better as time goes on, but again to compete next week it's an area that will need to take the next step.

Keenesaw st game just reinforced the importance of shot selection and defensive rotation issues.

To take the last issue first (defensive rotation), how many 3s were wide open for them? Saw a bunch of matador D in the first half, with open shooters thereafter. Hopefully this game nudges Pike to really get after the freshman as to their court positioning and D concept knowledge. It could be the difference between a good/special and really disappointing season. There may be a window now that really could help this team.

On the D front, the JWill led press was excellent. It masked the rotational issues as it allowed for going for steals mainly, which has been the D 's issue. JWill's D was solid even not in press and we need to figure out what his role will be as it needs to be a big part.

The rebounding was atrocious, and I think this is in part to the defensive rotation issues-players just not knowing where to be or understanding the help D concepts. This position issue has led to offensive rebounds because players are not where they should be and openings for rebounds exist. Gotta clean this up asap or teams will crash all year long successfully.

Shot selection: The first half was so much one on one and no team concept. This type of play has an unintended consequence--lack of offensive rebounds as players are not where they should be spacing wise, and more so-watching. Ace needs to get his shots in the flow of the offense. The pick and roll is a good start. So many were forced with others just watching him. Harpers second half burst was largely street ball to the hoop in a frenzied comeback attempt and not within the flow of the O. Seems only Hayes was getting his shot when and where he should be. Somerville--ball still hasnt come out after going in to him. Movement is needed and that needs to start with Harper, who has tended to stand around when not taking it to the hoop.

Isolate Ace on the weak side-run him off screens, as well as Hayes. Get everyone moving and less watching of the guy with the ball.

These two areas are the ones to watch this week as they will likely also impact rebounding.

If we ran an offense that emphasized shot selection, floor spacing movement with out the ball, with the pieces we have we should be getting good looks on most possessions against anyone!
My son ran into one of his AAU teammates , who finished up at Cal Baptist, after playing in the PAC 12 for 4 years, extra Covid year.
He was shocked that Rutgers lost to Keenesaw state.
They had no business beating a team with ACE on the court.
It’s coaching! Basketball is a small community. Pike needs to pull this together!
The basketball world is watching, everyone knows who ACE and Dylan are!
Totally agree with the black hole concern,
Nothing is more harmful to team unity, than a black hole.

One other point re shot selection. Have been really surprised that Ace is so willing to settle for mid range contested shots instead of taking it to the hoop. With his length and leaping ability there is very little way to stop him without fouling.

He LITERALLY could lead the B10 in free throws if a concerted effort to take the ball to the hoop was made.

Get stops, and then get more stops.
That’s Pikes offense

The bigger problem is the inability to win road games against out of conference teams.

Defense, rebounding and loose balls......those are the 3 things to worry about.........unless you think Ace and Dylan aren't really NBA lottery picks. If that is the case we have more problems.

In usual years, yes. The scoring numbers have been fine this year, albeit against lesser competition and with poor shot selection.

It's the other end of the floor where stops do not seem to have the priority of the past.

Will be very interesting to see the rotations against a 3 shooting ND team and whether they are as open as Kennesaw
