2017 SG CJ Kelly Visiting for PSU Game

Good start.

I'm very interested in seeing the 2017, 2018 and 2019 recruits that will sit behind the Rutgers bench for Big 10 home games this year.

It would be helpful if information on the skillset of recruits was mentioned rather than just a highlight tape which in most cases shows dunks and layups against weak opposition.

From what has been said about CJ Kelly, you can take his game as someone who has the skillset that Pikiell wants. Active rebounder, has energy. He is athletic, and could be more of a guard with a forwards rebounding skillset.

Not too much out there on him. He has size at 6 5. Not really a shooter from what I have read. More of long armed, athletic defender that has a lot of potential.

I am not sure you want to bring in a lot of tweeners, as sometimes they work out, sometimes they don't.

Pikiell does this for a job, though. And he has shown to be pretty darn good at it. I trust him.

"Not really a shooter".... No thanks. Sorry this type of recruit will not get it done. Better to save the ship.

No disrespect to CJ or any other recruit....but it appears that RU needs some SHOOTERS! That can create their own shot/ knock down the three.

I'm hoping we land some top 100 talents (local or otherwise) to help fill this need.

Create their shot as in move around enough to get open? This offense is not free wheel. Winning will happen, but it is not about dribbling and getting your shot off. It rewards a hustle.

So I think we need a mixture. Kids that can make a shot, but kids that are moving around enough to get a "good" shot off.

I am not sure what you are saying. If you are saying we need a jason kidd type PG you would be wrong. We need guys who can SHOOT the freaking ball.

I agree. But you cannot shot if you turn the ball over the way the team did against PSU. Everyone is talking about shooting, but if you do not get your opportunities on the offensive end, you will not get to shoot. Sure, the team needs shooters, but those players go to Kentucky.

The team will get there. It will take a little bit. If you want to see great shooters, you probably would be better off watching another team. I do not see it happening this season.

Again, what are you talking about? Of course it is not happening this season. This thread is about a recruit for next season. And no, "shooters" do not all go to Kentucky. 6'10 guys with skill to play as freshman go to kentucky. Every team has shooters out there expect us and it is because of poor recruiting. We had plenty of opportunities to make shots vs PSU. Many wide open shots that were missed. I don't ever want to hear again that said recruit is not seen as a shooter unless the guy is 6'9 or above.

I am saying that this player can still work for us even if he is not a "shooter", and I trust that the staff has the right plan in place. I am just wondering after the last game how the idea of "we have no shooters" came up, but not the fact that the team is not giving themselves opportunities to shoot because of turnovers.Work on that, and you have a little better shooting outcome.

That poor recruiting topic has so many variables, namely the program has been poor so why would we get recruits? The program needs development. They have brought in many "shooters" in HS, but it does not pan out always, and sometimes it takes a year to show up.

If you want to be disappointed, keep your mindset. At least for another year or two. It is about development.Best shooter in the country went to Seton Hall, Myles Powell. He is having a very regular freshman season.

Why?Because basketball is an interesting sport from a cultural standpoint. What works in HS will not work in D1 basketball. It takes a little time to develop, and to change false habits.

We are always saying "They had better 3 pt shooters". The team has also had horrid 3pt defense. Our teams shooters will not get better this season. Hopefully the teams 3 pt defense does.

Another topic?Sure. But this is a message board.

This. I'll even settle for top 150 guys. The rest of the league plays at least 60% of their starting lineup with top 100 guys, if we settle for "system players" we will never leave the basement.

The need for better talent starting with shooters has been well known for decades but getting those type recruits to come and stay at Rutgers without transferring has been the ongoing problem.
