What happens when you move a game to Thanksgiving Day only to have Thanksgiving Day move on you? That’s what happened when Rutgers was scheduled to play at Brown on Thanksgiving Day on November 30, 1939. President Franklin D. Roosevelt decided in October that the holiday would come a week earlier but that states were free to pick either the new or old date. Rutgers and New Jersey went with the new date, Brown and Rhode Island with the old. Rutgers students now had classes on game day and protested. Rutgers administrators rearranged the holiday time so fans could attend the game and have a long weekend. The students agreed to one day of make-up classes on a Saturday.
Everybody have a great and bountiful Thanksgiving. Be safe in your travels. Peace.
