Active shooter in Warren, NJ

My outrage is at the degradation of this board.

There was a time, not too long ago, when a thread about a breaking news story like an active shooter would have led to posts about what was happening. Someone like RU4Real would have contributed information that he learned from his scanner, instead of immediately engaging in a dozen-post debate on the technical accuracy of the newspaper article, complete with everyone lobbing insults and childish names at each other.

I thought he brought up an interesting point. I agree that the insults are childish and inane.

Sorry you don't appreciate my beef with the media - which published an allegation that the shooter was in possession of an "AR-15" long before anyone actually knew what kind of weapon he had.

Even now the cops aren't saying what he had. The papers are calling it an "assault rifle", but the authorities are refusing to confirm that.

The media calls everything an assault rifle, is the point. 99.9% of the time the person reporting has no clue what that actually means.

Actually I do appreciate your beef with the media. I have often criticized NJ.com as being more interested in clickbait than accuracy. When I was in college I worked for the Baltimore Sun as a fact-checker, a job that seems to no longer exist at many newspapers.

However, when I first clicked on this thread, I was hoping for discussion about what was going on ... and hoping for different information than was available in the initial newspaper article. I didn't mind your correction of the misinformation in the initial article. But the way you corrected the misinformation baited the type of response you predictably received, and the thread quickly degraded from there.

Only MadHat seemed to provide additional updates on what was happening in Warren. And while neither you nor anyone else is under any obligation to feed useful information to this board, there was a time in the recent past that this board would have been a source of useful information. And it seems that may no longer be the case. And I am within my rights to lament that loss.

I'll try and do better...

LOL.

Despite the fact that I called you out (primarily because you posted the second post in this thread), you alone are not responsible for the quality of this message board. The responsibility for this community rests with everyone.

Yes , I'm a moderator who is criticizing you for trying to stifle conversation in the thread. If you don't like the conversation, you could always just butt out.

Stifle? It was about a thread about a shooting in Somerset Co, not a debate on the weapon. And what does Obama have to do with it while we're at it?

I get the feeling you're someone who is passionate about guns and gun control. Nothing wrong with that, I used to own a rifle back in the old days but don't tell me to butt out when I was the one saying stay on topic.

I think it has its moments.

Frankly, as the community has gotten larger over the years it's been harder to rein in the mass hysteria. The board was a lot more civil when there were only like 10 of us.

I thought the last RVision thread worked out really well. So... credit where credit is due, right?

Holy false outrage. It's not like we're at a funeral here. I didn't see some of these people complain when the president paraded newtown families around the country in an effort to guilt congress into passing rapid and thoughtless gun control laws without discussion.

Damn. You win the Internets today with that beat down. LOL.

If you took a break every time someone like these idiots went OT to show how much smarter they are, you'd never be here.

Innocent people were murdered but let's focus on arguing over the weapon used. Typical nonsense.

Ya know people get murdered everywhere daily - hell hourly. Why the outrage over us not covering this one properly in your opinion? We totally skipped over about a hundred other deaths in the country since then. Where's the outrage over that?

The topic was that there are reports of a shooter in Warren. It was not meant to be a sympathy thread for the victims. The type of gun reportedly used is probably one of the most important facets of the story, and if someone points out information that the reports are not plausible, that is a valuable post in the thread.

And why is that?

And why is that?

The type of gun used is always a key component of a shooter story. Why? Ask the news editors. If they are going to emphasize the type of gun used, correcting their misreporting warrants equal emphasis.

Just a guess. Maybe because this was in many here's back yard? It brings it a lot closer to home.

And yes, there should be outrage every time someone goes out and murders. Houston had 8in one incident the other day. Chicago has sometime 20+ in a single evening. Let's not forget Charleston. You should never become numb to what's going on in this country.

If this is political about gun control, then move the thread mod. Send it there talk football here? Isnt that the basic rule

Hey I've been barking up that tree for years, but the majority disagrees with me in general about OT posts.
