And so it begins, Big 10 on Fri. nights

A weeknight home game in an on-campus stadium seating 100,000+ is a logistical nightmare. Add in the distances people travel to many of those same venues, and I can't see anyway those schools would be eager to host these games.

For some of the B1G's other programs, though, I think this can be a nice way to get some added exposure. Plus, and let's face it, this is the primary reason this is happening, it will be a lucrative mini TV package the league can sell.
Ah bullshit. They're going to whore us out twice a year so the other teams can make more money off our backs. We're the B1G's little whore right now we'll play any where, any time, any body they want us to play and they don't even have to pay us.

We'll get two of these sh*t fests to go along with our Crapee Stadium game. Stadium size my ass, what a crock of sh*t excuse. Like we need more exposure. Our f*cking AD farts in public and it's world wide f*cking news.

My bill is freaking ridiculous, but I do love my DVR.

conversely I never on demand. With verizon dsl and directv, it's a hassle.

Roku's (and probably other streamers) gotten great for college football - apps for major networks, ESPN channels and B1G, and the latter two have great on-demand content. Some of the network apps are useless for it, though (CBS and Fox). I've barely watched any CFB on cable this year.

I hate the Crapee stadium game (and I will not attend), but the B1G had ZERO to do with that. That's all on Julie and Hobbs.

No more than 1 home game per year per school.

Penn State would have to cancel classes and literally shut down normal weekday operations anywhere close to the stadium. The traffic would be an utter disaster. These same problems would exist everywhere to an extent, but they would be magnified on a rural campus with tens of thousands people commuting from hours away.

It is what it is. The B1G can make more money by playing a handful of games on Friday nights, and even better when it can move games that would draw average to below-average viewership on Saturday to prime time Friday. In return, those schools get some added exposure and a night game atmosphere.

All of that said, everyone's opinions will differ based on their personal situation. Live and work near the stadium? Friday night games are awesome. A lot of people here consistently cite youth sports on Saturday mornings. Friday night games solve that problem. But work late on Friday nights, or far from the stadium? Awful.

Can't please everybody. As a PSU season ticket holder who lives 2.5 hours from State College and works M-F, I'm glad to know it is unlikely we'll ever host one of these. I'd love for PSU to refuse any Friday night games - let's be real, only UM and OSU could get away with that - but a random road game wouldn't be the end of the world either.

But if we get exposure from the game, do we not benefit? And Michigan aside, RU has done well in these night games, in attendance, in atmosphere, in quality of play, I feel this is a move made for RU not one that tries to take advantage of.

And it is beat we are not getting full $$$ yet, but we will, and in the end, these years of partial will be a tiny piece of the timeline.

Just noticed that Michigan State's 2nd week (first game) opponent, Bowling Green is scheduled to play another team on labor day weekend for BG's opener. That means they wouldn't move up the Michigan State game for Friday night labor day weekend

FYI:

“Those were important during deliberations,” said Rudner. “And the fact we are doing it just six times a year, and two of those six games—at least in 2017—will be on Labor Day Friday, which is an area we have been before. We are really only talking four other games during the season.” - See more at: http://btn.com/2016/11/02/friday-ni...ig-ten-starting-in-2017/#sthash.CHyD484P.dpuf

You do realize that there are still more high school games in NJ, on SATURDAY, than on Friday nights, right?

This is false...at least a quick glance of this weekends sked. Almost triple the amount of Friday night games than Saturday.

That being said, not an issue to me and love Friday night games.

No more than ONE game per year per school.
For now. 1st it was the B1G likes all home games played on campus. That went out the window. Then it was the B1G plays all it's games on Saturdays. Well that only took till year 4 to change. Now the B1G says one per team. That'll change as well.

Your stadiums in the middle of a friggin cow pasture. You act like psu is located in some hub of society. Shut down normal operations close to the stadium? Like what move the cows over to the next pasture. Give me a break, there's nothing there except psu. No this is a convenient excuse to exclude Ohio St. and Michigan from this agreement , you just happen to have a large stadium. The B1G couldn't just come out and say everybody but OSU and UM now could they.

You can post all of the laughs. It doesn't change what I said.

Statement from Penn State Athletics:
"Penn State has informed the Big Ten that we will not host football games on a Friday night. We are receptive to an occasional day game on the day after Thanksgiving. There are a variety of reasons why, among them, we know how important Friday night high school football is to hundreds of communities across the Commonwealth. In addition, we have considered the impact that a Friday night home football game would have on key community stakeholders. We support the conference's desire to expand exposure for Big Ten Football on national platforms, providing additional content at high demand times, and we've agreed to play no more than one away game each year on a Friday night."

Guess it depends on the weekend and the school. I'd still say it's likely there's more Friday night games around the state ..but not really a huge difference.

Team Sandusky also said they will not play on Friday nights.
Something tells me there will be a backlash from other long time B10 memeber schools over this treatment to a certain few other schools..
Penn State informs Big Ten it won't take part in Friday Night Lights #collegefootball

Sounds good to me. One more open Saturday for a whole lot of other stuff that goes on in the fall.

Again, don't care, still a lot of bullshit whining, but if you look back through this thread you'll see that I very clearly state that the schools who will HOST these Friday night games DO NOT INCLUDE your cow pasture. [thumb2]

I realize you think State College is still lacking electricity and running water, but believe it or not, people do work in that area outside of Beaver Stadium. And the parking lots are used for purposes beyond tailgating. Like I said, a Friday night home game would require shutting the university down for a day. And that doesn't even touch on getting tens of thousands of people into and out of town on a Friday evening.

Weeknight games wouldn't be my favorite if I was an RU fan either, but the logistics of hosting one in Piscataway are completely different than in State College.

Washington at RU. Bet on it.

Probably right though I hope you're wrong considering it will likely be Labor Day weekend. Was hoping to fly back for that one and leave on a Friday night - have spoken to a few Washington fans out here who were also thinking about making the trip but have a feeling a Friday night game might make it a bit more difficult as far as taking time off from work.

I think the B1G should go ahead and schedule Michigan for a home game on a Friday night. If they don't play they forfeit and owe the visiting team for their damages. See who blinks first: Harbaugh or Delaney. same for Pennsylvania State.

get over it. You aren't going to get a seat at the best table in the land without some concessions. Wanna go back to the ACC or maybe the MAC? We could play Tuesday night like Western Michigan. It's one home game a year. IF USC can play on Thursday we surely can oblige one Friday to the TV Gods.

Unfortunately I'd bet we get a much bigger crowd for a game in NJ on Friday night of LDW then Saturday at Noon or whatever. Much easier for most to arrange plans, as well, because you can still do 3 full days down the shore after the game.

OP linked story said:
Friday nights, though, long have been considered sacrosanct, the hallowed ground of high school football. Many felt the prep tradition of “Friday Night Lights” shouldn’t be impeded upon. But the Big Ten says the high schools within its footprint are in lock-step with the league on the move to Fridays, along with administrators on Big Ten campuses.

“We have studied this and have talked with a lot of people on campuses, to presidents, chancellors and athletic directors who all have approved of this plan moving forward,” said Rudner. “We also have had conversations with the executive directors of high school athletic associations across all 11 states. Commissioner Delany has been doing that.

“We recognize that it is important to maintain good relationships with the high school executive directors. We have been in good communication with them, along with our schools. It is likely the Friday night schedule will impact no more than six schools. We don’t have the schedule confirmed yet. But for 2017, it would impact up to six.

Late to this thread.. but is there a math problem here? Each game needs 2 schools. 6 games, up to 12 schools involved. Or are they simply referring the host teams when they say it will "impact" up to 6 six schools? Or do they mean that 6 teams will each play 2 Friday Night games in some kind of crazy round-robin?

You do realize that there are still more high school games in NJ, on SATURDAY, than on Friday nights, right?

5 years ago I would have agreed with you. A lot of school districts have moved towards installing lights. The last two schools I have coached at we averaged 1 Saturday game a season. My first high school coaching jobs played its home games on Saturday and every away game was on Friday nights.

Why because you can finally make a home game. I like Saturday football games. This is what everyone was saying when we entered the B1G, no more weekday games. Well within 4 years we now have a weekday game.

Frankly they suck. I own my own business and contrary to many beliefs, I can't just leave when I want. I have a responsibility to my customers and workers to be there. This is just the beginning, if they can market this package they'll expand it. And it'll be RU playing multiple weekday games not Ohio St. or Michigan. This is just the start. You even called this one happening.

No, on any given Friday about 70% of all NJ High School games are now played, +/- 5%.
RUFromJ, there you go introducing facts, better check, that might be against board rules...I agree with you. I'm personally okay with Friday night games but it will adversely impact attendance from HS players and coaches. Students will like it, though.

Washington at RU. Bet on it.
I think that's very possible. Interconference games on weeknights isn't a new thing even. I'm pretty sure a MSU/Boise State game a few years ago was on a Friday night. I think Wisconsin has played a Thursday night interconference game as well.

For the games within conference, I'd expect a heavy dose of the lower tier members like us, IU, Purdue, Northwestern, Minnesota, Illinois, etc..I think you could see the MSU/Wisconsin/Nebraskas for early season interconference games. I don't think we'll see OSU/Michigan at all and maybe not even PSU either.

This was an eventuality with all the big numbers thrown around in tv contracts. For the most part you go where they tell you to go.

I'm 100% fine with THIS game being on a Friday night on LDW. Just my best "bet" right now.
I had to google "LDW" to understand what you were saying. "Last Day of Week" was in the lead until I saw "Labor Day Weekend."

Double the people but same logistiucal issues, fans driving in the day of the game!

All I see is the further notice that RU will always be at the kids' table of B1G football along with Maryland, Indiana, Purdue, NW, and Illinois. Those 6 Friday night games will always be hosted by one of these 6 teams every year, just like how Jacksonville loses a home game to London every year. We know where we lie on the pecking order.

Forgot Minnesota. Its half the conference. Rather the fun table at night than the Breakfast club in the morning.

Yea that's why. Don't be a moron.
Anybody who watches college football knew this was coming. Networks weren't going to sweeten the pot by tens of millions of dollars without increasing live programming. It's simple math. You are going to know a year in advance when these games are. Sorry but I can't imagine any business that you can't give coverage or slip out a few hours early with that much notice. If you can't I'd suggest you look at your business model. A successful company works for you....you should never be a slave to your company.

I would take Friday over noon on a Saturday any day.

And that goes double for LDW....UW on Friday night looks like a lock right now and I would gladly take that. Everyone will be out of work early for tailgaiting and you get the rest of the weekend.

Attendance will be up overall versus a nooner. The slog of noon games this year has been totally miserable.

Ok I'll end this discussion with you. You called me a moron, I've never called you a derogatory name in all the years I've been on this message board. I run a successful business which I started from scratch. No one gave me the money to start it either, I worked and saved. While other businesses were going bankrupt during the recession mine thrived do to my tireless effort to make sure it succeeded.

Your a good poster vkj91 I just don't take kindly to you questioning my business skills or being called a moron. I will refrain from commenting on your posts in the future. Please do the same with mine.
