The dude is a baller and doesn't back down, and seems to like mixing it up. Early in the first half when Delgado half bumped one of our guys near the FT line, which didn't seem like that big of a deal on replay, Eugene casually shoulder-bumped Delgado, which caused some jawing among the players. Eugene and a SHU player both were called for technicals, which settled the situation down, but Eugene immediately clapped in their faces and enjoyed the whole thing.

Then after he was fouled toward the end of the game and went to the line with a few seconds left, the SHU players could only watch from half court while he took his free throws. After he made his second one he turned toward mid-court and clapped and high-stepped right toward them, while Corey and Mike were riling the fans up even more. That attitude is seriously necessary to get over the hump and create a culture of toughness.

I'm not big into schadenfreude, but I was yesterday due to the trash talking and rivalry (yes, yesterday started a legit rivalry between us and SHU because we needed to win one before we could call it a rivalry). Their board melted down and I loved that it was their board and not ours doing the melting. Eugene was the man with his hard-nosed, mentally tough, fvkc-you attitude, which contributed to us not folding down the stretch. While he was taking his free throws, the SHU players were stunned into finding a way to process the loss, and thanks to the students storming the court the SHU players just walked off the court. Might have been a good thing that the handshake line didn't happen. Great win, and I appreciate Omoruyi's attitude as much as anything I saw in our team, and there were a lot of good things.

I definitely enjoyed it from both teams. It makes it an exciting actual rivalry with a little hate sprinkled in. It's what pro sports now lacks. I also liked Delgado in the heel role.

Great post!

I love everything about Eugene. It is so clear that his IQ on the court is sky high. He is as tough as nails, always has his teammates backs, and can defend guys who are significantly taller and bigger than him. Oh, and he can score and rebound in bunches...and is a solid FT shooter.

And is IMPROVING on every single item above.

What's not to love?

Loved that. Our guys werent gonna back down from a scrap yesterday. Idk if anyone else saw but freeman went down by the SHU bench to chirp powell after his hard foul on Eugene with 3 seconds left. I was reading freemans lips and he basically in so many words said "you a little boy, u aint about this life" then Threw up some signs haha

I didn't see Freeman do that, but that's awesome. The camera was on Delgado at one point as he was walking past our bench, and our guys must have said a few things because Delgado kept walking but had a slight smile on his face from the trash talk. Some players do their trash-talking more subtly (I was shocked when I found out, about ten years after he retired, that Larry Bird was one of the biggest trash talkers in the league--he did it quietly), and other do it more overtly. Omoruyi is a bit more overt, at least when the other team is trying to talk shit, and it looks like Freeman is a bit quieter. Both work for me.

Delgado's a punk. He and Rodriguez shoved the Scarlet Knight during pregame because the Knight was in the way of their layup line. Was surprised that security did not get involved but not many others saw it. Brief mention in the APP article.

Agreed, I've also seen duke be like this towards other teams. Didn't get to see much of him yesterday as he came out flat.

Eugene and Mike Williams play with a different type of heart, tenacity and fire that cannot be taught.

Just look at their eyes and body expressions after plays.
Agreed, Mike has been like that his whole career. He is my favorite RU bball player of all time. Kid plays for keeps.

Corey also just had that look in his eyes well, kind of like he just knew he was going to show out. He was shooting with confidence and getting the crowd in the game after this makes

Eugene is turning out to be the type of player I never expected. With the way he is developing his game, he is going to be a big scorer. Just watch when he develops a mid range game to go along with his inside moves.

Eugene is basically our version of Draymond Green (minus the dirty play). Does all the little things behind the scenes, can play multiple roles, and makes the other team go crazy.

(yes, yesterday started a legit rivalry between us and SHU because we needed to win one before we could call it a rivalry).

I just don't get this mindset. THIS IS A RIVALRY. This has been a rivalry for a LONG TIME, even if you're just waking up to it now.

Needed to win one? Seriously? Did you just start following RU basketball when Eddie Jordan was hired? Mike Rice went 5-2 against SHU, with the two losses by just 5 points each. EJ then handed us two of the worst losses in history of the series, back to back.

From the 2001-02 season through until EJ was hired, we went 13-15 vs SHU. 4 of those games went to OT, and another 17 were decided by 6 points or less.

Needed to win one.... smh...

No, I'm not newbie, so step off your high horse. Before spouting off perhaps you should clarify context. The dynamics within and between the two teams have changed, which Coach Pikiell himself alluded to when he said that in order for it to be a rivalry, we have to win one. Our own coach said that. A number of our fans on our board, including BK118 himself, said that this game doesn't mean as much any longer, that it's essentially an OOC game that doesn't carry the same luster as beating our conference foes. Nobody says that about rivals. WVU and Pitt aren't rivals any longer due to switching conferences. They can't stand each other but they don't consider themselves rivals. Our slide into oblivion after Rice left, along with our move to the B1G, set the stage for this rivalry to lose its allure, and many of our other knowledgeable fans have said that much. Now that we won an emotional one, giving Mike Williams and Freeman their first victory against SHU, we finally kept the 4-year-old trophy home. The rivalry was renewed because we won, but don't think that we wouldn't have downplayed this game had we lost.

Find a different Rutgers fan to pick your battles with. Better yet, find a SHU fan to battle with, then SYH.

as recently as about 4 or 5 years ago you would have some here say it was Princeton.....and it was, at one time.... those who still think that a bit are now wrong.

Ask Mike Williams if it's a rivalry.

Sure, there are fans who have "moved on" and have started prioritizing conference opponents. Attendance on Saturday speaks volumes to what the fanbase thinks, though.

Even the ticket office excluded the Seton Hall game from promotions and ticket bundles... Because duh, it's a rivalry game.

High horse? I'm not the one looking down on a long-standing rivalry just because we upgraded our conference.

And as for whether Pike feels it's a rivalry, from before the game:

“This is one game you don’t have to market,” said Rutgers coach Steve Pikiell. “It’s come a long way the last few years, and I’m excited about where we can move this rivalry to.

“We only get to play each other once a year. It’s good when Seton Hall is good, it’s good when we’re good. So I think it’s a good healthy rivalry, and I’m excited about it.”
