If Eddie decides to make a change with his assistants who should he look to?
I was thinking the profile would probably be a young asst with another team or one of the Parochial coaches in NJ with success.
The reason I am thinking a parochial coach is because they don't have the same benefits and pension packages as the teachers who also coach in the public schools. A public school coach may be a teacher too. If a public coach in 33 with 10 years of teaching experience they may make 55-65k depending on the district they are in. On top of that they may earn another 10-15k as the head basketball coach. Since public school teachers have a nice pension and strong union it would be a risk to jump to a college role. Also, public school coaches are not recruiting kids the same way the privates do.
The guy I am thinking of is Dave Boff of Roselle Catholic. I am not sure his age or his current salary but we are paying our asst coaches between 120k and 200k. This may be a step up for him if he desires to coach at the college level. We know he can recruit and get top kids. Maybe he can continue to do that at Rutgers. Maybe he goes the route of Danny Hurley and goes to a midmajor (ie. Hofstra) before moving up the ladder. Danny is at URI after being at Wagner and doing ok but he still is not at the P5 conference level.
While it is a risk, if Boff is able to help Rutgers turn its program around he may be able to move up the coaching ranks or be Eddie's replacement in 5-6 years when he retires.
