- ROSEMONT, Ill. – The 2016 Big Ten men's lacrosse All-Conference teams and individual award winners were announced on Tuesday, with Rutgers’ Scott Bieda earning Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year honors from the conference's coaches. Ohio State’s Robby Haus was tabbed the Defensive Player of the Year, the Buckeyes’ Jake Withers earned Specialist of the Year honors, while the Scarlet Knights’ Adam Charalambides was named Freshman of the Year. Rutgers mentor Brian Brecht received Big Ten Coach of the Year honors.
Bieda ranked second in the Big Ten with 4.20 points and 2.40 assists per contest in conference games only, and currently leads the conference with 4.14 points per outing in all games. He has scored three game-winning goals, and tallied nine points against St. John’s in the season opener, the highest point total among Big Ten players this season.
Haus scooped up 31 ground balls during the regular season, helping anchor a Buckeye defensive unit that allowed just 9.1 goals per game. Haus, who served as a team captain this season, has started 65 games in his career and is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection. He was named first-team All-Big Ten this season after claiming honorable mention honors in 2015.
Withers leads the Big Ten with 6.40 ground balls per game and paces the conference with a 63.2 faceoff percentage in conference games only. The Peterborough, Ontario native was twice named the Big Ten Specialist of the Week during the 2016 season. The 2014-15 Academic All-Big Ten selection gathered 109 total ground balls and won 183 faceoffs.
Charalambides heads into the Big Ten Tournament with 35 goals on the season, and scored 10 in conference play. In all games, he ranks fourth in the Big Ten with 2.50 goals per contest, and is seventh with 3.50 points per outing. Charalambides claimed seven Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors, including four straight from Feb. 16-March 8.
Brecht led Rutgers to 10 wins, a five-win improvement from the 2015 season, and the No. 2 seed in this week’s Big Ten Tournament. Rutgers led the Big Ten with 12.4 goals per game in conference play, and was tied for first with 19.4 points per contest. The Scarlet Knights enter the Big Ten Tournament having won five of their last seven games.
