To the Rutgers Community:

Today is a day of change for our Department of Athletics.

This afternoon, I spoke with Head Football Coach Kyle Flood and met with Director of Athletics Julie Hermann and informed them that I was exercising the university’s right to terminate their contracts without cause and that I am relieving them of their duties effective immediately.

Kyle Flood has been a loyal and dedicated member of our community for more than a decade and our head football coach for four seasons, during which his teams won 26 games and played in three bowl games. However, our continued struggles on the field combined with several off the field issues have convinced me that we need new leadership of our football program. I want to thank Kyle for his service to Rutgers and I also wish him and his family well in his next endeavor. Norries Wilson will serve as the Interim Head Coach leading our off-season program until a new head coach is hired.

Julie came to Rutgers in 2013, at a time when the program was in turmoil, with a vision of where she could take our Athletics Program. I believe, however, at this point, when major changes are being made in our football program, we need a fresh start. Having reached that conclusion this past week, it would not have been fair to Julie, to Rutgers and our student athletes, or to potential football coaching candidates, for her to continue in her role. She is a capable administrator whose dedication and passion for Rutgers never waned and I wish her and her family all the best in the next step in her journey.

When I made the decision last week that we needed a change in leadership, I set out to find an interim Director of Athletics who could stabilize the Department before launching a national search. On a strong referral, I met with Patrick Hobbs, Dean Emeritus of the Seton Hall University School of Law, who previously led the athletics program at Seton Hall University during a period of major change. In addition to these assignments, Pat has served on various state legal and ethics boards and commissions and most recently was appointed by Governor Christie to serve as an independent ethics ombudsman to the Office of the Governor. In my meetings and conversations with Pat, and also with Board Members Greg Brown and Ken Schmidt, it was clear to all of us that Pat had the attributes required for our next Director of Athletics. We offered Pat the permanent job on Friday and we are proud to welcome him as our new Director of Athletics.

The search for a new Head Football Coach will begin immediately and will be led by Pat Hobbs, with input from Greg Brown, Ken Schmidt, and me. We all believe that Rutgers football can be competitive in the Big Ten Conference and we will find the right coach who can get us to that place.

In the coming days and weeks, you may read and hear rumors, speculation, opinions, and concerns regarding the football search. I ask for your patience and trust, as the leaders of your University help write a new chapter in our history.

We thank Julie and Kyle for their service to Rutgers, and I thank all of you for your continued support of this great institution and I know you join me in welcoming Pat Hobbs to our family.

Sincerely,

Did I read interim and national search? Oh I see, a very short national search.

I cant find this anywhere...... also the tone in the message almost seems sophomoric. Not making definite accusatiom but this could be possible fraud by the OP

Don't like the "we believe the Rutgers football can be competitive in the B1G" would much rather hear "we believe we can be B1G champions and will bring in a coach that can bring that". Please Barchi get us a coach that will be more than "competitive". Don't set your sights for the future so low!

If so, give him a chance. I know Dean Hobbs. He presided over a massive transformation at Seton Hall Law School. He also handled the transition as temporary AD at Seton Hall. Yes, I would have liked to have seen someone with P5 experience, but knowing Dean Hobbs, I think he is up to the task. He is a consensus builder and can unite factions, in my opinion.

From above. Wow.
WOW. I know nothing about the AD but it is strange to tap a former Seton Hall AD even with political connections to Christy without more of a process. Hope it works out but I must admit I am a little anxious about this hire.

What no Golf coaches were available? JK

Barchi has sent out an e-mail to the University community with the statement. The appointment of Hobbs indicates, I think, that cleaning up the program is Barchi's first priority. Finally, Barchi knows better than to expect us in the near future to outdo teams like Ohio State's and Michigan's statement

Pros -

1) can clean up compliance issues
2) knows the political landscape in NJ
3) is an attorney

Cons
1) no real experience in big time athletics
2) is an attorney

The letter is on the web site for the Office of the President. The OP post is legit.

More about him: http://www.southorangejuice.com/201...epping-down-as-dean-of-seton-halls-law-school

"Dean Hobbs led the Law School’s successful Seton Hall Law Rising Campaign, which raised over $25 million dollars. He led the effort to develop an innovative skills-based curriculum to provide students with critical legal skills beginning in their first year. This program will increase employment outcomes for the school’s graduates, already among the highest in the nation.

"Dean Hobbs has strengthened the School’s uncommonly robust alumni network and forged programs to build and sustain diversity within the legal profession. From 2009-11, he provided oversight for the Department of Athletics, hiring new coaches for both the men’s and women’s basketball teams, restructuring the department, and negotiating the move of Men’s Basketball to the Prudential Center.

You are splitting hairs here. If there's a coach available that can bring us a championship, it's not like Barchi is going to pass over him for someone that will only make us competitive. I don't know how you can confidently say that Coach X will make us competitive but will not bring us a championship anyway though. Obviously the goal is to just hire the best coach we can.

I like the move. Will it work out in the long run? I have no idea. But on paper Dean Hobbs looks like just what we need, at least in the short term. Let's clean this athletic department up once and for all and start fresh. Maybe we can finally behave like a major state university athletic department should. I also like that this happened quickly. It shows there was a plan in place and things are moving forward. It actually gives me a little more confidence in the coaching search now going on.

With all his ethics and political experience, the hire seems to make sense. How much you wanna bet that the "strong referral" was Christie?

If Hobbs is permanent this is pure politics. Did a decent job at SHU after Quinlin got canned. But he hired Willard and was influential giving Willard an extension when he didn't deserve it.

We can clean up the program and win at the same time. By the way, I hope "clean up" means spending money and hiring the ancillary people that will keep the program moving forward, rather than relying on individuals to do the job of 2-3 people.

Let'e keep it real here the Athletic Department is a mess and is toxic with warring factions and leaks for days. We need an outsider to come in a clean house and get us where we are run like a real AD and not a mickey mouse club.

Don't like the connection to Christie. Before we were in the B1G how many times did Chris (Go Irish) Christie worry about Rutgers?

"and most recently was appointed by Governor Christie to serve as an independent ethics ombudsman to the Office of the Governor"

that's a lot like being Bernie Madoff's CPA

I like it .
The AD is not a coach. It's an administrative role. If Hobbs can get everyone on the same page, then he will have done a good job.
Everything rests on the football coach selection.

Vote for the right assemblymen, senators and governor, and get out your checkbook. Again.

Firing Flood without cause means he will be getting a big paycheck of over 1 million dollars plus there is the issue of paying the assistant coaches with contracts for next season. How much money will be available for a new coaching staff based on Rutgers perceived financial constraints?
