CBS Sports reporting Rick Barnes to be new Tennessee coach. That didn't take too long. So much for the Barnes bashing. Still don't know what Texas was thinking. The not good enough lately comments are comical when you consider that his losses in the Big Dance were to #2 seeds, Michigan and Duke. The third loss was to that slouch, Arizona. Tennessee is getting a great coach!

what aren't you getting. Texas wanted a change. Their fanbase and boosters wanted a change. Their expectations are higher than to just make the NCAA tourney. They want Big 12 championship and Sweet 16 at minimum appearances. Barnes had plateaued there and underachieved with the talent he had. He could have stayed there for 10 more years with 7 more NCAA appearances but they wanted more and they can pay for more and the job is attractive enough for more. I think they make a serious run at Gregg Marshall.

Good landing job for Barnes at Tennessee, its not a high pressure job for basketball. He can succeed there and make the tourney in a weak sauce league that has two great programs and then everyone else fighting for 3 NCAA at large bids.

Ben Howland now and Barnes and weak sauces, Kentucky and Florida, could become an amazing league. Have to see if Alabama makes a run at Marshall as well. LSU always lurking and Vandy poised for a nice run. Texas a bit quick on the trigger forgetting a Final Four run and two Elite Eights as well as Kevin Durant. The plateaued idea seems odd with injuries and several losses to two seeds Duke and Michigan. Sounds good but not really accurate.

Seth Davis reporting that Jay Wright said no to Texas overtures. Me thinks Texas should have had a firm plan before firing a coach 300 games above .500.

New AD at Texas and he wants his own coaches. New generation of donors, too. Barnes is a good coach, but he was there past his due date. The word is Shaka, but we'll see.

Hmmmm (the good "hmmm").

That's who Texas is targeting or that's who they think they'll get?

Because that is two very different things.

I agree with this in that I can see the SEC definitely improving as a basketball league. I won't say amazing but I will say better than they have been in the past. They're starting to put some of that football/tv money into their basketball coaching. Donovan/Pearl/Howland/Barnes/Calipari is a solid set of names and then add possibly another solid name at Alabama. I'm always about coaching so if they continue this trend I could see the SEC take some steps up as a basketball league.

Doug Gottlieb just did a nice little piece on Barnes. 16 NCAA tourney bids in 17 years and never in trouble. Pretty impressive! Also amusing that he will have coached at three schools with orange as primary color: Clemson, Texas and Tennessee!

now was the time for Jay to go, he will be a Nova lifer

Clemson got tired of Rick Barnes' winning ways. He wasn't Dean Smith so they got rid of him. Texas was fortunate to get him. Clemson hasn't done dick since they got rid of Barnes. We'll see what happens at Texas. Tennessee will move up a few notches with Barnes.

Obviously he is happy where he is and well compensated. He would have made more money no doubt but to some coaches it is not worth it to uproot your family if they are happy where they are.If I where a coach like Wright, Smart,or Marshall I would stay where I am also . They are very well compensated and appreciated by their fan bases. That will not be the case at Texas where their every move will be questioned.

He was fired from Clemson? I didn't remember that. I thought he left on his own for the opportunity at Texas.

Marshall's been to a Final Four and a Sweet Sixteen at Wichita State. Plus, he's had a 35 win season and Wichita gave Kentucky all they wanted in the tournament last year. He's built something there. The only reason to leave for Alabama is a lot more money.

Barnes had a losing conf record at Clemson (.438)...and only had an overall winning record because of easy joke non-conf schedules.

In Barnes' 4 years at Clemson...only one season he finished at above .500 in case play (just barely, 9-7).

Sssh don't let the facts get in the way of three NCAA bids and the most success that Clemson ever had, making the Sweet 16, was with Rick Barnes at the helm.
