If RU brings on a GM like Pisari mentioned….we agree we need someone with a complimentary skill set?

Sounds like there is consensus that Pike is disadvantaged in the portal world as he grew up before its existence.

Even if he tries to go back to a predominately build/retain from HS players he will still need some level of portal success to be competitive.

Pisarri said we are spending the whole 20.5M so let’s curb the “we don’t have the cash thing for now” assuming yes blue bloods will continue to have an advantage there but it will be diluted (for now).

Here is my wish list in skills:

-Ability to project forecast success from lower conferences to B1G/RU*

-Analytically savvy understands both player performance contribution and scheduling implications.

-Able to develop market value model for players / replacements. (E.g. how much do you overspend to get person X or retain player Y).

-Excellent sales skills, this person needs to be able to sell Pike that he is seeing a false positive or false negative on some
Of the above.

*You can argue that this is Pikes job, but let’s be honest he didn’t have to do this task to be successful in the past and his current track record is not good.

Transfer track record (in current era portal/NIL world)

Hits:
Cam

Sort of:
Hyatt
Derkack

Misses:
Noah
RGA
Hayes
Martini

Exemptions:
A Williams
J Williams
Acuff
Ogbole

Fund raising is not the primary skill set required for the role.

I’m not sure where this person is coming from but we are going to give them several million to spend here year in/out.
And have seen a gap in Pikes skill set here while we are committed to spending a ton on Pike. We may need to hit a home run here. Money is spent on Pike, money will be spent on players (lots) we need to make sure we have someone who can manage it very effectively. So Pike can focus on culture building / development / coaching staff / game planning / regular headaches).

I’m all a serious skeptic that this is someone already in the Rutgers Universe.

What else you guys think we need here?

Money manager with college basketball experience in some capacity. Not necessarily a coach but player. Not that he would, but Myles Johnson would be excellent. Geoff Billet? I’m sure there’s many possibilities. But how much is he paid? Like an assistant coach? It’s clear that it’s needed.

As brilliant as he is Myles wouldn’t be a good choice because he doesn’t have the exposure to the coaching/player assessment world. Nor would he want it - his career is elsewhere. Geo would be a full circle choice given his early NIL involvement. Billet sounds interesting.

I could see Geo, great presence, but too green at this point. How about the husband of the lady on BOG - the ones with money and influence?

I don’t see why a money manager would be needed. If there is an annual allocation of funds, say $3million, then isn’t the GM just helping find the best combination of players to fit within that number. It’s not high finance. It’s addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We would want a basketball guy who can judge talent and work with people.

It’s not high finance but there has to be a “money ball” type of eye involved.

Even though it’s not a high finance guy…it has to be a bit of an analytical person who also knows hoops well.

It’s probably someone that can convince Pike that although Evan Miya doesn’t grab rebounds what he has to say about those who do does matter.

So a smart basketball guy.

Will be interesting to see how RU attacks this one. Many different profiles in these roles across the landscape. Dunleavy at Nova comes from the coaching ranks, Baker at Duke with a Nike background, Kline at Cuse with recruiting and some NBA, Carolina went the ex agent route. Will be interesting to see what type of profile emerges as the most successful. Regardless - there are many connected to RU with all of those type of backgrounds. At the end of the day - RU will get what they pay for as the pool of talent for this role will be highly coveted as most high majors add this role and a supporting staff over the next 90-120 days. Need to invest the right way here.

This ^^^^ scenario always frightens me with RU. Making good, forward-looking decisions in a timely manner is not an RU strength. Hopefully, this time...🙏🙏,

The question is who is making this decision Pisarro?Pikell?
Our whole athletic department is a mess so who knows?

The ability to fundraiser has to be primary. It’s not like we’re getting say 3 of the 20 million and our competition gets 0. Big East schools don’t have football. Other mid level p5 schools still have whales. All the market pricing for these kids just went up. Now a player who cost $150k will cost say $350k. We need more funds first and foremost. We need a whale or a few smaller whales.

I do agree with the ability to predict the ability for success jumping from mid major to p5 and for some skill at money ball though. But if it’s a Pike decision the gm might just suggest and won’t have much say, leaving us open for more bad talent decisions.

Finally could we get someone who will correctly predict if shooting will translate to the B1G. Should be a coach/scout thing rather than a gm thing but so many times we’ve been told this guy or that is a sniper. Sigh.

Isn’t the gm supposed to be over the coach in a hierarchy?
