Anyone else watch the Big Ten Commissioner give his remarks at Big Ten media day?

He went into a history of college athletics and the purpose that it has served. He also talked about the changes in diversity that have occurred. His main point was that the NFL and NBA should set up minor leagues in lieu of the NCAA paying athletes. This would give players the choice of whether they want to go to college or get paid right away.

I thought Delany made great points, and I agreed with everything he said. Anyone else catch his remarks?

Did he discuss the excessive spending for satellite camps, IMG-based training camps/facilities, and $6M a year head coaches?

Delany thinks the comish, the schools, and the coaches, should all make millions a yr, while players shouldn't make anything.

how is this guy not the chairman for the GOP?

on a side note, he does think the players should be "well fed"

Actually, they don't make millions per year. The programs (e.g., football / men's basketball) may themselves make money but they have funded the diversification of college athletics.

If the athletes are so valuable, they should elect not to attend college, and go obtain their market value. That is the point. Such competition would be a good thing for all (players and the schools).

But since you mention it, Delany is a far more reasonable person than either of the two major candidates.

Only 1.6% of college FB players make it to the pros, per the NCAA's own records. Jackpot? Hardly. Best case: they earn a degree.

What does the percentage have to do with anything? For the guys that don't "make it to the pros" they were never going to get paid anyway. So basically they are getting a free education out of the deal.

Considering the cost of a degree these days the 98% of players who never play a down in the NFL are making out better that those who played 2 decades ago. Not saying that players should not be compensated in other ways....

Players get $300,000 of free education, plus tutors, great food, medical care, tv exposure, etc. not a bad deal, not to mention half never see the field so all gravy for them.
