Big Ten Network’s Joshua Perry on Gavin Wimsatt: ‘Man, I think that kid is special’

but some fans think we should move on because obviously he is not the answer. probably the same fans that thought Pach’s running form was unnatural.
Many fans would change QBs and HCs after any loss. It’s an emotional and often irrational response. Some seem to think people just show up as a finished product, the whole concept of development and gradual improvement is foreign to them.

He may or may not be the answer. I for one am not 100% certain he is. Im hoping he is but ya never know

What fans want to move on from Gavin? I follow this board pretty closely and have never seen that argument.

Shoot he’s the only reason to watch anymore

think you are just too busy trying to get GS fired 😀

One commentor makes a positive comment and you buy into it and go back to your familiar mantra of disparaging any posters that don't agree with your position. The kid has yet to have a breakout game, he has a strong arm, but his accuracy is questionable at best. Will he be able to control his arm and improve his accuracy enough to win at the B1G level, that is still an open question.

No this is Rutgers, we couldn’t be so lucky… but for real, who is calling for Gavin to not start moving forward? I haven’t seen that argument at all

For some fans it’s trying to balance winning todays game with the readiest at the moment quarterback, versus developing the new qb that has long term prospects. And using the young guy making it less likely to win that game

Fans also argue if a new quarterback can develop at full speed without being in games. Or can they develop in practice and step in after progressing that way

Hes definitely a bust. I mean, he's already started what, 3 games in his career? He can't improve any more. This is his ceiling. Three games is more than enough to become great. If he's not there yet, he never will be. Come on, he came in early last year when he was 17 and learned all that he could. He's a bust. Definitely the worst. Play (insert next name here).

Next year should have decent QB play with Wimsatt and Simon having gained experience. And, a five star WR or two and continued improved OL play next year would really help their development.
Running backs are already solid.

I beg to differ. Monongai has been a nice surprise after Brown went out.
The kid should have been the designated starter on the first day of camp. Schiano, but especially Gleeson, fumbled that one.
Not a chance. In regards to potential ability, he led the pack. But he was not acclimating quick enough to the college game last year. That is from someone who shared the field with him. Putting him out there in what was his senior year of high school would have been a potential disaster.

I would imagine Perry's words (especially the bolded part) will be quoted quite heavily in trying to lure top recruits, especially WRs, to the Banks. Sure he needs to improve more, but he's already made some big strides in his 3 main games this year and his ceiling is quite high given his talent.

“I will say this about Rutgers. Gavin Wimsatt and what I believe that he can be into the future – man. I think that kid is special,” Perry said on the Big Ten Network this week.

“He needs to refine his game. He needs a little bit more touch. He needs to continue to learn. But the physical tools are ridiculous. And w saw the run game open up a little bit because you have the threat of a quarterback who can be dangerous running and passing. And now you’re in a position to where, of course you’d love to make a bowl but let’s say you don’t. Recruiting is the most important thing now. I’m going out on the road and I’m going to every wide receiver and I’m like ‘Look at this guy that we can have throwing you the football. Join us. Join us because we can build something special.”

Some said Gavin is a bust.
I haven’t seen that at all. I’m not really sure how one could call any freshman a bust….

That being said Gavin has talent, no doubt about that. What’s critical is finding an OC capable of implementing an Option/RPO offense to maximize Gavin’s capabilities

His on field performance of reading the B1G defenses will improve after each game.
His accuracy however is the big question mark right now. Many throws are wild and off target. This has to improve significantly for Gavin to move to the next level.

Hes also made a few really nice passes with more time (more time in both ways - him getting more practice/gametime and the OL giving him more time to pass.)

No way ! Do you understand the process of development ? Kid was also injured which added to the issues There are certain reads and progressions a QB needs to understand among a hundred other things before you throw him out there full time . We promised his parents he was in good hands and that we would take care of him.

He was injured vs temple…. Was fine for camp

Hes got aways to go on accuracy and reads but hes got the arm strength and looks like the game has slowed down for him somewhat.
Would like to see him become more of a run threat , and hopefully better reads and descions lead to less interceptions.lets see more improvement hopefully in next two final games.

A decent passing performance and offensive game vs PSU and Maryland would really help. It's asking an awful lot to have big time numbers put up against PSU, when they have the player advantage across the board, but a solid 8 quarters of football would cement Wimsatt as the 2023 starter.

Not just saying this because he seems to always be in RU’s corner, although that is nice to hear, especially when you are down.

But, to me, Perry is one of the best, if not THE best, young football commentators in the game today. He is smart, eloquent, interesting. You never hear the same bullshit canned takes from him. Seems like a genuinely nice guy as well. B1G Network is lucky to have him and I would not be shocked to see him eventually move up to higher jobs at the other major stations.

I disagree with your analysis of Gavin. He has improved his accuracy pretty significantly since earlier in the season or even from a week or 2 ago. Personally, I consider his performance against Michigan St a breakout game...20 of 34 (59%) for 236 yards with 2 TD's and zero INT's. He showed signs of it in the 1st half against Michigan but regressed in the 2nd half.

The question of whether he will control his arm and be accurate enough to win in the B1G has at least in part been answered and he's only scratching the surface. The question now is will he be able to consistently perform at the level needed to win big in the B1G? There is little doubt he will be a good B1G QB, how good is the only question IMO.

Respectfully disagree. The MSU game was not a breakout game by any definition, completion percentage and/or yards. He was also very inaccurate on many throws. Is he improving his accuracy, I have yet to see it. Is he becoming more comfortable on the field and reading the defenses better, I would agree to that, but his accuracy will determine his success in the B1G.

I was done with him after last year's Illinois game.

I think the important thing is that we see progress. There was definite progress last week....not a breakout game but good progress.
He's the most talented QB we've had since Tom Savage.

I'm looking forward to seeing all those frosh OL guys who are redshirting. Maybe seeing some in these final two weeks.

More touchdowns than Mike Teel who had Brian Leonard and Rice. Leonard who had 200 catches in his career to dump ball off to. Wimsatt has nothing on Offense. Would kill to have Clark harris at tight end.

He's like a young MLB pitcher. When he's wild he's usually wild high. That has INTs written all over it. It's OK to bounce one every once in awhile but wild high is not good.

We all want Gavin to have accurate passes…some even post that he throws accurate passes when he clearly does not. (At this point at least). Let’s find an proven QB Coach who can work with him and develop his skills !

I would be shocked if Simon returned. Hope he does but I think he's gone.

I like Wimsatt's arm strength and the way he stays cool under pressure. The MSU game show positive development which is encouraging. He will improve on reading defenses, I hope he improves on accuracy and touch. If he continues to have games like MSU, which was good but not great, we will take it and he will be the clearcut starter next year. I would like to see Simon get some time here and there to as no team should have only one qb. PSU is a tough D so Simon should be ready today. Finally, try to get Abarecchi some snaps in his last home game.
