Guy had the opportunity of a lifetime. Being in the exact right place, at the right time. But, he threw it away, by being immovable. If he had shown even the slightest trace of flexibility/creativity, he'd have enough support to keep him around.
But, the guy walks around like he's the second coming of Bill Belichick. He loses an entire recruiting class by telling them they can't look at other schools. He's kept the same offensive and defensive schemes for 4 years straight. He's kept Nova and Laviano permanently in place despite historically abysmal performances. He can't even alter his own mantras. He may be good at deflecting press conferences, but he's just not good at psychologically understanding his fanbase... and in a business of providing a product to an audience, he failed.
The thing that absolutely boggles me is if he had put Rettig in to any one of those blowouts and given him a legitimate chance... it was a win-win. Either Rettig struggles, and Flood looks like he was right. Or Rettig performs well, and Flood gets points for finally making a change. In a game that was literally completely out of reach by the start of the 3rd quarter, you do it! Because the nasty booing and fan backlash, is part of that equation. If you're going to be that stubborn and not care about the fans, then you better be damn certain you know what you're doing. And it's now been abundantly proven, he doesn't.
Can't say I feel bad for a guy that's going to walk with $5M+ for the time spent here.
