C.J. Gettys Penn State Post Game Interview 2.4.17

He's a solid player and has real good ball skills for his size. Just doesn't have that jumping ability. Overall very good for the team to have him for the year. I notice he's trimming down a little. I think he came in overweight and it's taken a little time to burn off that weight

I loved the line about blowing the "Middles School layup"...and shooting with confidence.
That's what you need to make foul shoots.. PLEASE take that to the other players CJ.
Also, have that confidence to take those wide open shots they are giving you from the line.

Glad he is proving that he certainly CAN be a force in this league and not a foul machine. Great find by coach.

Not just taking the open foul line jumper , but starting the game today with 2 easy bank shot layups that he should be doing more of in his game. There is no reason he should not get 10 points a game doing those simple things. On the right block, he feels comfortable but on the left block , he tries to bull closer and hit a jump hook , which is good, but if he just turned to his left and banked the shot ,he would make things easier on himself. He should get 10 a game from here on out.

Gettys giving Rutgers 6-10 points a game at the center position is a plus on a team that lacks scorers. While he has flaws like most of the players I like his attitude and the fact players on the team recognize his importance to winning.I wish he had another year based on the lack of production from the backup centers.

Gettys' tenure here will make it easier to land graduate transfers in the future.
Years ago, Rutgers had a tall young player, Josh Sankes, whose game was very similar to Gettys.
As a freshman, Sankes' game was not ready for the Big East.
He transferred to Holy Cross, and became a solid contributor to the Holy Cross team that made it to the Big Dance his senior season.
Big guys who aren't destined for the NBA often take longer to develop and patience from the fans.

I thought Gettysburg was going to be a 5 minutes a night player with no Offense. So happy that he can contribute and give us some offense from the center position.

He can't get those easy bank shot layups because he is spending too much time at the top of the key doing dribble handoffs or throwing passes out of bounds from that high post....it's not his fault, he is just being poorly used in those situations.

RU-Choppin-Ohio ... Assume you know that Al Groh is a former Randolph, NJ resident, who like another NJ resident with NFL ties, Phil Simms, never let any of his sons give Rutgers a sniff.

CJ Gettys is one of my all time favorite Scarlet Knights.

Proud to have you representing RU on and off the court, CJ!

that's the first poor pass I have seen him make from there. perhaps a few I missed but I don't think he makes poor passes.
(I think) he's up there to open up the floor plus the coach thinks he CAN make passes. They gotta go low more often with him though. Seems they only give him 1 or 2 post ups per half.

Gettys has made a lot of bad passes from that spot while trying to feed the post. Either stolen or out of bounds. His perimeter passing is not bad, but, post passing is bad. It's the primary reason a few posters questioned why the centers were playing at the top of the key so much.

He drives me crazy sometimes but he plays his butt off - in the end we are better off with him than without him.

I am very happy that we have CJ for this season. If he gets the ball on the right side low block he usually scores. On the left low block it is much more difficult for him. We really need a center for next season who can score. Hopefully Doucoure will reclassify for next season otherwise SA, Doorson or Diallo need to make huge improvements.

Big knock on Sankes was foul shooting (and he was part of the strip tease foul shooting "contest" that cost Bannon his job - even after he transferred if I remember correctly he was 50% or less on FT.

The thing that I could not understand, was that, Phil was close to Schiano
and at the stadium very frequently, and I always hoped he would
be influenced to send a son around. I think he saw how Schiano
would wind up with ruining the offense by messing around with QBs.
Turns out he was correct, Greggie was a disaster with QB's.
Look at the Savage disaster.

He is good for a need but I get frustrated watching him.
- his size and blocking ability is a definite plus
- he is better than most of the team at the line but surprisingly he does not have as many free throw attempts as other players
- he helps in providing depth at the 5 with Doorson and Diallo
- his height probably helps in practice since sometimes you are playing against 7 footers but have none to practice against
- he sometimes gets nervous when handling the ball leading to turnovers (double dribbles and walks).
- he struggles with the big man short shots (7 foot hooks and short jumpers)
- he is slower than the other players getting down the floor that leads to the other team's big man getting some easy shots

All in all, I think his benefits outweigh his faults. Basically you can't teach height. We have a 6 10 and 7 footer backing him up that will be Juniors next year and better able to step in as starters.

BEST FB post ever......

I dont need to over analyze CJ...he is who he is
a 7 footer who gives you 8 pts & 5 REBs nightly & can distribute the ball

Thats good all the way around

Sankes was a 7 foot white guy. That's where the comparisons with Gettys end. Gettys is slow and can't jump but he's much more athletic in the sense of good hand/eye coordination and shooting touch not to mention self confidence. The "success" of Sankes was the result of playing in a non-scholarship conference at Holy Cross where he could play in relative obscurity and where just being 7 feet tall made him a useful piece. I saw him play for Holy Cross at Princeton his last year and he was the same stiff that would not be a contributor at the Big East level. Gettys would eat him for lunch.

It's a motion based offense. My daughters team runs a similar style offense. Their center comes up to foul line faces basket should have multiple options from that spot

Everyone knows what a motion offense is, I am talking about a center spending 75% of his time at the top of the key.

I thought Savage said last year that it was his fault, that he just wasn't mature enough.

So let's add being humble as another one of his attributes.
He finished high school early to join RU, maybe Greggie could have
handled the situation better?
