“The growth of Division I revenue sports, lifted by huge sums of money, is simultaneously exciting and scary,” wrote former Rutgers Athletic Director Robert Mulcahy in a 2020 memoir. “It creates feelings of unbridled power that is addicting and dangerous to a university’s health…. Agree, he is right. I took a big step back because of the pandemic. I came to realize there is a lot of fun stuff you can do on a Fall Saturday and still watch the game instead wasting an entire Saturday in a parking lot and a crowded stadium.
What's going on with college football (NIL, transfer portal and this crazy conference realignment) is leading me to take another big step back. I'm not done but it will be just Homecoming from now on.
It's a dramatic change from my days parking the white bus in the Blue Lot on a Friday night and setting up for Saturday's tailgate before each and every home game. Kind of sad.

This, and a few other RU-specific details, are why I'm cutting back this year. Although, truth be told, I wasn't even planning on monitoring the message boards, reading articles, or watching interviews (pre-season) and you see how well that worked out.

At least, I won't be driving 500 miles round trips for every home game this year.
