Carino: Nigel update and Pikiell turns up the heat.

Not going to lie- I am a bit surprised.

To me, the team did not lack toughness. They lacked ball security and ability to hit shots. I saw a lot of kids scrapping.

I'm fine with questioning the overall toughness, even if I thought we played hard its a good motivator. Not too sure I like the insinuations with Nigel though. Get the vibe Pike doesn't think its something worthy of missing time...

Yeah. Just like what is being talked about now though-keep team matters close to team. Oh well.

It was very apparent Johnson was hurt. I think coach was just ticked that night, and didnt know where his head was at. Johnson sure has to clean up the turnovers, but he is still a very valuable player.

I am sure he rebounds. Pun not intended.

Why does the article show Chris Ash with a caption that talks about "possible effects of an NCAA investigation?"
They couldn't use a picture of the guy who coaches the team the article is about?

I don't think the problem area is toughness but rather lack of talent as seen with the abysmal shooting. The Iowa game was over at the seven minute mark with the score at 26 -7 where Rutgers couldn't defend or score. The coaching staff has no where to turn with the current squad .I'm hoping there will be a roster shakeup at the end of the season. Kicking the can down the road another year won't help with the won/loss record or improve recruiting .Action is required now as a means of showing the coaching staff won't accept the status quo of being the worse team in the B1G.

There is definitely more to this. He is clearly not happy with Nigel. You can spin this anyway you want....the bottom line it isn't good.

Agree. While the talent is clearly lacking, it's disappointing when Coach Pike says that Toughness is a problem on this team.

Add the Nigel Johnson injury issue into the mix and the trip to Happy Valley looks like another blowout.

I hope that Coach Pike cleans house after this season.

Too many lazy, me first, under achieving players without enough talent on this team IMO.

This team lacks moxie, to those 60 and older. We could use a talent upgrade, but without moxie you have no chance of winning on the road in a hostile environment. Marquette's Al McGuire is the perfect example of a coach who recruited players with moxie. Butler and VCU and Va Tech are current teams with moxie. Buzz Williams is this era's Al McGuire.

We lay one big giant egg and now our players are "lazy", "under achieving" and lack "moxie". I know Pikiell wants these guys putting more time in the gym on their own, but at least in games they have fought their tails off and battled for 40 minutes against much more talented teams all season. They just aren't talented basketball players. More specifically they are horrible shooters. The worst collection of shooters on a Rutgers team I have every seen, bar none.

My comment was about Nigel ONLY.

Team as a whole not lazy. Mental toughness is different. Given the coaching staff (really a coach) last year it is totally understandable. Learning to win.

We aren't a really tough, mentally-sharp team (and yes, being tough and mentally tough are very related)

I'm extremely pleased with pike calling guys out and wanting them to step up their game. Everyone from the players to the fans need to stop being soft

I've watched every game this year, and I 100% disagree with you. This team fights more than any team we've had in a while. You think Mike Williams isn't tough?

Moxie is hard to come by when you can't make shots.

This team fights harder than any team ive seen on the past 5 years & does MORE with less talent than any team in recent memory. I would have LOVED to see mack & jack play under coach P.

Freeman, Cory & CJ are the only 3 players who compete consistently on O. Sometimes Williams steps up. Sometimes Nigel steps up. Never both at one time so far.

They ALL play good D,,,but we have no bench when it comes the Offense
Most games the 7 on our bench chip in 1-2 baskets COMBINED....that just wont cut it

Several announcers have mentioned that on a solid team Freshmen like Omaruyi & Thiam might be redshirting. ...but the fact is,,we NEED to play these guys

with the exception of the Iowa game I see a pretty good team out there
and we have EARNED a LOT of respect

Things WILL change. Coach P WILL get his kind of guys on board......

We didn't fight vs Iowa (except for Williams and Freeman).

Everyone else pretty much blew.

Pathetic effort.

NJ needs to toughen up. his game has gone in the toilet against better competition in the B1G

spotty energy...was a beast on the offensive end and on the glass, but too many possessions didn't play D.
hopefully coach got in their face and challenge each player to be accountable to their teammates. Seems to me that a few players were more into their stat line than winning against Iowa.

Some posters on this page don't seem to understand the definition of toughness. Playing your heart out, which many on this team do, doesn't mean your tough. Toughness is the state of being strong enough to withstand adverse conditions or rough handling; the ability to deal with hardship or to cope in difficult situations. We have failed miserably under these conditions throughout the season, i.e., if our guys were tough we wouldn't have collapsed like a deck of cards at Iowa or at MSG vs. Wisconsin.

Well said. Effort and heart (apart from Iowa) are not issues on this team at all. Talent, well, yeah, that's a big issue.

I'm sure that coaches comments are very clear inside the locker room, and that is what really matters. Guys like Mike Williams that are tough as nails, don't need anyone to tell them. (BTW...what a breakout year it is for Mike. I'm so happy for him. He seems to be more comfortable being a B1G player! All of the work he is putting in on the defensive side of the ball is paying off on the Offensive side; he just seems more confident that he belongs, and that is making him more consistent.)

Toughness doesn't just being a meathead and throwing yourself around. It also means being mentally strong. Errant turnovers are part of that.

When a sports program is consistent losers outsiders keep searching for the reasons why .Once you get pass the obvious lack of talent other reasons cited are side issues that distract from the root cause of failure.
