Carino: Q&A with Pikes

Wild to think basketball is gonna turn around 100x faster than football(if it ever occurs). Love Pike. Enjoyed every game we played last year. Lightyears difference.

I am really encouraged by how that interview went...very very upbeat for this season.

The thing that is interesting to me is that he really seems to like Mensah. If he is actually a legit D1 player and not overmatched...and Doorson is healthy...things could be interesting.

I'm glad Doucoure is practicing with the team. Hopefully he will be fully cleared very soon.I liked Pike's comment, "We're Not Duke". How true. Their last minute recruit was cleared in like a few days and some thought he might not qualify.

From how it looks, Mensah is a player of very high character. Coach likes that. I do not expect him to be a great d1 guard, but a kid who plays a very important role in giving 8-12 minutes a game. I think the coaches want a leader out of the point guard spot, and like his capabilities. It sounds like they are trying to find a better spot for Sanders to operate out of. I would not be surprised if you saw Sanders play a little bit less minutes.

Doorson has a great degree.Unfortunately, I am not expecting much basketball wise. I don't think he has been on a court practicing basketball in a while.

I disagree on Doorson. First of all, the team needs him. If he were out completely, we won't be winning too many B1G games this year, maybe 2-3 at most. If he is healthy, he will play a lot and I think will play his best yet.

Yep. He showed he can defend, and while he'll never be a mid-range shooter, I think he can continue to improve his offense. Think how valuable even his put back dunks off Sanders misses were last year.

Believe me, I have a huge amount of respect for the kid. Basketball, or not, just seems like a great kid.

When is the last time he has ran a sprint? Jumped up and down for twenty minutes?

Just be realistic. There are other options. Doorson will have a great future, basketball or not.

Doorson has not been able to do any running at all this offseason....He didn't play more than 2-3 minute bursts last year, because he wasn't 100% at all last year. Doorson is not a key at all to the success of this years team, he is a potential factor that we are hopeful can contribute in spots this year in conference to grab a rebound or defend, maybe 8-10 minutes a game.

The reclassifying of Doucoure and the add on of the Randolph kid Luke Nathan as a walk-on at 6-10, should clearly signal to fans that they are contingency planning as if Doorson may not be available at all. We can hope he gets on the court and can help, but I don't feel comfortable placing any sort of emphasis that Doorson will be a factor right now.

I really don't see a frontcourt of Freeman, Omoruyi, Doucoure, Sa, Washington and Nathan allowing us to win many tough games this year. As a group they would be out matched most nights. Just not enough size, experience, talent, and athleticism there, and if you start talking injuries forget it. Just my opinion though

I think you mean Johnson and not Washington. But you are correct, the front court will be very thin and susceptible to regular beat downs in the B1G. Sa is too thin, Omoryui and Freeman are too small and the rest are freshman.

We should clean up OOC and end up with a record similar to last year, IMO.

Yep Johnson thanks. All the Washington talk lol.

I dunno ... how is that much different than last season? Sure, RU had Gettys last year, who will be missed. Gettys was key in a number of games. He had great size, nice touch, good passer, but very limited athletically against any quick front court player. Sa could improve - and should improve. By all counts Omoruyi, who was very raw, is much improved. Freeman IS small, but really played well, more often or not, in the 2nd half of the Big Ten schedule - he showed he can compete, even at his size. The question then becomes, can Doorson help AT ALL defensively and on the Boards, can Johnson (with very good size) fill in a little, is Doucore ruled eligible? Nathan is a walk on - expect nothing and be pleased with something.

We will go small this year with a lot minutes for Omoruyi at the 4. But, I'm expecting Sa to really be a solid contributor this year. He has skills - needs to get comfortable in our sets.

It's possible to play small without Doorson and be competitive in some games. But over the course of the season it will wear us down, and some teams will simply have too much size. I think a totally healthy Doorson vs a scenario where he doesn't play at all is probably a 2-3 win difference.
