Good to hear Luke Nathan is doing well. Might need him to play minutes sparingly with Doorson's foot issues. Looks like there's some depth in the frontcourt all of a sudden
All I know is our staff got killed a year ago for getting Souf Mensah. So many wondered what coach was doing and thought he was wasting a scholarship. People need to trust our coach. He knows so much more about basketball than our fans do.
I never said a negative word here but I didn't like this signing at all. If Souf turn out to be a solid contributor I will be thrilled. Like the early returns.
He may need to play safety
Fast and extremely strong, Pikiel will make him a great defender if nothing else.
I trust this staff and did not kill them about Souf. But, let's be real here. A couple of reports from practice is hardly proof that Mensah will be a big time contributor to this team, as a JUCO should be. Let's wait until the season starts before we anoint anyone.
I'll be happy if he is a hard nosed, scrappy point guard who makes the right passes and hounds the other point guard on defense. I have no expectations scoring wise other than don't take dumb shots and make an occasional open 15 footer
I would also add, push the pace of the game when applicable. Heard he is very fast and loves to run.
No one ever said Souf would be a big time contributor to our team. Coach wanted another point guard who he could trust handling the ball and be tough on defense. Most expected him to only come off the bench and do those things for our team. We have expected him to probably play as a backup point guard and probably only get about 10-12 minutes a game. No one anointed him for anything.
If there is to be more wins this season ,Rutgers must score close to 70 points per game in league competition.The unknown is the players who will score more points to make up for the loss of scoring from Johnson and Gettys.I doubt if Souf is part of that discussion.He might be a contributor in other ways that will help Rutgers.

Oh I'm sorry, jucos have to be big contributors to have value? This is not the type of kid whose stats will shine..if that's the requirement i can tell you right now you're gonna be disappointed..just sad that our fans can't see the value of a true point guard when he's literally the ONLY true point guard on the entire roster.

Let's be real here....and most know my opinion of Corey Sanders.....this team in this year doesn't win without Corey. Nigel is gone and now Corey is alone in guys that can create and score by themselves. We are not gifted with offensive talent on this team in 2017-18. If this team is going to exceed expectations I don't see any blueprint that doesn't have Corey playing a dominant role in the team's offense.
Yes, with only two years of eligibility and coming in as an experienced upperclassman, a JUCO should be a big contributor. I think most every D-1 coach will tell you that. The only exception might be to plug a roster hole and even out scholarship distribution when there is no one else available. And, I'm not saying at all that Souf will not be a substantial contributor. I'm just saying you can't tell that from a single puff-piece report from pre-season practice.
Don't expect Souf to be a 3 point shooter. Most of his shots will be in the transition game or off penetration for a mid range pull up. Most shots will be in the paint area..
Souf is here to be a point guard and a tough defender.
About 50 kids who played JuCo in 2017 will be playing D-1 basketball this upcoming season. Your opinion is all 50 will/should be "big contributors" to their team? I don't agree. Maybe 5% or 10% will be big contributors. The other 40+ kids will plug holes and/or add depth.
Well maybe I'm just batshit crazy but I'd say he's a contributor already considering he's literally the only true point guard on the roster. We aren't most D1 programs in the country so we shouldn't have the same expectations for a juco as them. Most schools yes..he has to be a real player to take him. Our situation is as far from most schools as possible. We're in like year 15 of a rebuild. If souf can run our offense he's a solid get.
I don't have the stats, but that's not how it's generally worked at RU in the past. Just look at the recent JUCOs on the roster - Sa and Freeman -- and the recent past, like JUCO's Bishop Daniels and James Beatty. I'd say in the past several years 75% or more of RU's JUCO's have been big contributors.
Sa has not been a huge contributor unfortunately, and you can barely say Daniels was a JUCO. He started out at a high major D1 school, and transferred due to personal reasons.
Freeman was ranked as a top twenty JUCO in his class for the entire nation. The top twenty pan out to contribute a good bit. The rest are more role players.
I would say 15-20% pan out to be big contributors. Players who average 10 points a game, 4 assist, 6-7 rebounds.
I never said "huge" contributor. Candido averaged close to 15 minutes per game - I consider that significant. You can disagree. (I'd be happy if we got a solid 15 mpg from Souf). Daniels started at UM, but came from ASA JUCO, so that makes him a JUCO by any definition. There were others in RU's more distant past that were also MAJOR contributors like Jerome Coleman and Steve Worthy, to name a couple more.
Well see. I am not calling Souf a huge contributor. If he plays like mentioned though, and the team wins games, everyone must contribute something.
Geo can create and he is much better player than NIgel right now.
What evidence do you have of this? I'm not saying it's not true, but saying that a freshman who hasn't played the game yet is rarely better than a redshirt junior who was the best shooter on the team last year.
Gettys stats in the BIG 10 were 20 games played which included 18 regular season games plus two in the BIG Tournament. He scored a total of 142 points for 7.1 points per game in all of the BIG 10 games.
