Carter to leave Florida

BTW, did anyone see that Rick Pitino recently hired Ralph Willard? Is this similar to Jim Calhoun hiring drinking buddy George Blaney?

Don't know why Eli coming back is even a topic of discussion. While many don't want him back, there is no inkling that he has any desire to come back. Much like any graduate transfer with options, with all due respect, what is to be gained by coming to Rutgers? No inside info, but can't imagine Eli would consider Rutgers anymore than people wouldn't want him back.

Now as far as his ability, anyone who watched him play this year (I watched almost every game) realizes that his game has drastically matured, but unfortunately regressed due to the injury. He hasn't been the same since the broken leg. He has had to utilize a more crafty repertoire, but any shred of athleticism is really gone. Its a shame. He was a stud at Rutgers as a freshman and sophomore. Definitely liked to shoot, and was streaky...but by all accounts was a coachable player, well-liked by teammates who stayed outnf any type of off the court trouble. He also single handedly gave Rutgers one of theirnbest basketball moments in 30 years with that overtime win over a nationally ranked UF team before a hyped up crowd in Rosario's return. Even at say 75% of what he used to be he would still have been a SIGNIFICANT upgrade over Bishop Daniels, Mike Williams, Okoro or anything else aside from Mack we trotted out at guard this year.

I wouldn't expect him to return, I believe Jordan is looking for players for the future and a one year player would not be that important to his plans at this moment. Yes, he needs to start winning but Carter the answer, I just don't see that happening.

Durand Johnson who committed to SJU says he's trying to have Eli Carter commit to SJU per Zags

For the record I liked Eli and was sad when he got hurt and when he decided to leave. But he did and now it is time to move on.

Would be a strange road traveled if he came back, but that's really on EJ, Eli, & the rest of the team. I wouldn't mind seeing him come back for a year, but at what cost? If EJ told Eli he'd be second fiddle and Eli was good with it, I would give it a punt. It would give us a bit of offense & credibility, and if it worked out well, give an example to local recruits that it's not always greener on the other side. It's unfortunate that we're so far from being a NCAA team that a 1 year rental of someone of Eli's caliber is unlikely to get us there, so it's more unlikely than likely to happen.

Those two guys have a personal relationship that goes back to childhood. They played together on the same HS team.

Billy Donovan to NBA Thunder. It's time to make a push to hire Florida assistant Rashon Burno. He is a perfect fit for the old and new recruiting paradigms. Of course Burno is going nowhere if Danny Hurley is the new Florida coach ;-)

I look for Florida to stay in house and Hurley will stay at RI.
Danny really hasn't proved himself at RI yet , but is considered a coach with a great future.
John Pelphrey or Anthony Grant.
My bet is Grant because , guess work nothing else, Flordia felt theny might lose Billy and wanted his replacement on staff.
Anthony was Donovan's assistant for about 10 years before he took the VCU HC position before he took the Bama job.

Pelphrey was HC at South Alabama and Arkansas .
I think his time as the Razorbacks HC will put him out of the running, just like Danny's first two years at URI might hold
the Gator's AD from choosing him because of how Rhode Island did in his third .
Maybe if he brought the Rams to the Dance he'd have a shot, but think Grant is going to be the choice .

Actually, I'd be surprised if the hire came from within for anything other than an interim coach. I'd expect Foley to try for a bigger name hire than Grant/Pelphrey both coaches who didn't do well on this level in the past.

I've thought maybe a Richard Pitino or even a Gregg Marshall. If it's a smaller name hire, maybe an Archie Miller. I'm not sure where the Danny Hurley thing comes from. Pitino is green but at least there's that Pitino tree connection and similar style of play so I could imagine it. Donovan was another green Pitino disciple when Foley hired him. Other than this board's infatuation with the Hurleys, I'm not sure I see the connection of him taking over a championship level program like Florida or with Foley.

I should amend that to say I guess I could see a hire from within if Foley were to strike out with the Pitinos/Marshalls/Millers of the world. I still think every effort will be made towards an outside hire but these days coaches have been more "sticky" at their current spots than the past.

not saying you're wrong in thinking Foley will go outside the program , but zags ( just checked ) has Grant & Pelphrey along with Dayton's Miller and Mack from Xavier as ( for now) those he considers candidates to replace Donovan .

I'm sure the Florida assistants are on the list but I think they are the last resort choices if Foley strikes out on outside candidates. I named Marshall but he's probably a reach and I think he just upped his contract at Wichita State too. I think Archie Miller if Florida ponies up and Pitino are realistic possibilities. Chris Mack isn't one that I thought about but he could be too.

Just looking at his football hires, I think Foley either goes after a top assistant (Zook NFL DC/Muschamp top 5 DC) or strong midmajor coach (Urban Meyer/Jim McElwain). Considering how he's struck out hiring an assistant I think a strong midmajor coach like Archie Miller is the favorite if he ponies up and is able to pry him out of Dayton. I also don't consider Grant/Pelphrey top tier assistants to be head coaches anymore after their lack of success after having run their own programs.

Wonder if the Celtics coach is ready to return to the college ranks? Florida would be a great landing spot. And Florida has deep pockets.

I doubt it. He's had a relatively successful early stint. He made the playoffs this year with a team largely devoid of much talent and he's been getting good reviews. I don't think the Brad Stevens experiment is near over yet for him or the Celtics.

Florida may have deep pockets but they don't have the pockets of an NBA team nor do they offer the opportunity to coach at the highest level as we see with Donovan's departure. He can always come back to college if he fails like Pitino/Calipari etc..but I don't think that time has come.

I just cant see Florida going to assistant route here with guys who failed at previous head coaching jobs. They have the cache and rolodex to aim higher

Isn't/Wasn't Willard the SHU coach? Did he get bounced out of there? Things seem to unraveling up there.

With Donovan gone to the NBA, it would seem like Florida could be dropping down into the SEC pack, where it's the UK pros and everyone else. UF had a so-so season this year and he must have seen the handwriting on the wall. Why would Hurley go to Florida? Didn't he just get a nice contract from ASU?

Thanks.
