Chol

The problem this year was that we were hit with injuries and had a redshirt plus giving Terry a scholarship so we were really down 2 scholarship players. If you're going to redshirt someone then have to use all your scholarships

Nonsense. If you identify a kid with great potential who needs to physically develop, why wouldn’t you?
generally speaking if you still need to physically develop to the point you need to be redshirted then you aren’t Big 10 talent. Usually that roster spot can be better filled immediately by using the portal.

What was the point of him choosing to reclassify just to redshirt?

Wimsatt did it but so he could collect NIL a year sooner.

He still gets a year of college S&C, coaching, learning the system, adjusting to college life

Hopefully we see it pay off and he can contribute something next season, if needed

Chol seems like a 4 only. Right now at the 4 we have..

Mag - hopefully is back by the season and starter if healthy

Hyatt - possible transfer but know what he brings. Do not want him to start or have a huge role really. Poor shooter. Poor finisher. Mental laspes etc. If he leaves, a portal 4 is likely

Ndongo - Beast but true freshman

He committed 7/29. Pretty much out of nowhere…5 weeks before classes start.
I don’t recall any other irons In the fire for the 2022 class at that time or portal targets.
If we were holding out waiting on him (quietly) then there is an argument.
If Pike didn’t get anyone else he liked to fill that spot then taking a flyer on a pike attitude guy at that point seemed like a decent move (vs nothing).
Get him on the roster then….all the things Scangg said.

I’m sure we didn’t bring him in knowing he would redshirt. Pike assessed that he couldn’t contribute much yet and so that decision was then made. Nothing wrong with it based on the timing.

Down 2 is still 11. Mag Out = 10
Do you need more than that?
Caleb banged up so a walk-in has to practice but is that worse that having another scholarship guy if you know you can’t keep him happy
Nobody takes a scholarship to be happy being the 13th guy

Generally speaking this is an insane statement. Eugene o was a guy that could've used a redshirt year but was put out there out of need

The portal didn’t exist when he was recruited
But your statement was that if you aren't physically ready as a freshman, then you "aren't Big 10 talent".

I don't think anyone is arguing that you can't get more immediate help from the portal then from a red shirt freshman, but saying they aren't conference level talent because they need another year to bake isn't really the case.

In my opinion, redshirting should be for Big Men only.

There are plenty of situations where school take a big man who needs to lose x amount of weight or get his conditioning up or something like that.

Redshirting a wing player or a guard in todays game doesn't make a ton of sense.

The whole "get adjusted to college life" that @Scangg used is so out of touch.

Freshman today don't need a year to get ready before being contributors. By the time January rolls around you should know what you got in a player.

Does that mean I am ruling Chol being a decent player for us out? No, but I don't buy the whole he needed a year of strength and conditioning and adjust periods.

I don't know the whole situation admittedly though, if he was really a HS Sr who reclassed and just turned 18, then okay maybe theres a reason he ultimatley redshirted. But if he is a normal 19 year old freshman, he should be physically ready

Redshirt had to happen for Chol. He is a p-r-o-j-e-c-t, he passes the physical eye test but needs a ton of S&C and BB development. Pike and staff need to figure out what he is gonna be. The few times we saw him he chucked up 3's. Is he a good shooter, is he a banger inside, a slasher? I don't think any of us know what we have in Chol, but eager to find out.

Also can Chol be a Mag replacement at the top of our press. He has the length, does he have the motor? Our press suffered when Mag went down, can Chol be that guy to come in to give Mag a rest and be effective in the press?

Serious question. Did you watch Chol when he played? He was completely lost out there. Redshirting him made perfect sense. He wasn't ready

Chol certainly had the length, but he was completely lost defensively last year. It was really bad. I was high on Chol too and he has a ton of potential and high ceiling if he develops... he just really had no clue defensively what was going on. Part of that was joining the team late too which is yet another reason redshirting him made sense

The redshirt process still has a place in the game the way Pikiell coaches. Top notch programs like Wisconsin have made a living off redshirting kids in the recent past. Chol has tons of physical ability that needed to be refined and focused. He was a good take that late in the game last season, and I anticipate a larger role for Mr. Chol moving forward.

Oh I completely agree. That being said, I don't think he goes from being lost to an impact player. But like I said previously idk the whole situation.

If he was truly a hs sr who reclassed up, im fine with the redshirt, if he was a normal 19 year old freshman I'm not as hopeful

Yeah, didn’t see much development potential. Wouldn’t surprise me if he never sees the rotation

I think the simplest way to analyze this is that the coaching staff wouldn't have red-shirted him unless they have determined that there is a more than reasonable chance he will contribute in the future. Otherwise, they would have already had the talk with him or they would have at least used him more in garbage time, etc. to burn a year of his scholarship and move it one step closer to freeing up naturally. IMHO the staff still sees meaningful potential in him after a year in the program.
