Corey, you're the key to the team's chance of winning each game. Here are two things you can do immediately, starting in the very next game, that will improve the team's chances to win:

1. When one of our bigs sets a high ball screen for you, please look to pass them the ball after they roll to the basket.

2. Please eliminate the lazy passes you are telegraphing, mostly to your right, that are getting knocked away or intercepted by the defense that has studied your game films and knows what your tendencies are.

I promise if you make these two adjustments, and continue with your other great contributions, the team will have more successful trips down the floor on offense.

Long term constructive criticism is he needs to work on his left hand. He almost always went right vs. Nebraska and they didn't adjust and he had an easy time to the hoop all day. Not so much vs. Maryland as they were clearly defending him as if he was going to dribble right.

He definitely worked and concentrated on his defense this past offseason. Would love to see him fine tune that left hand so he can drive strong left every once in awhile which will make him even harder to defend.

Needs to be able to go left, needs to be a threat passing when penetrating, has to fix his shot and practice, and most importantly needs to compete more possessions defensively. After he knocked down a 3 vs. Maryland he came down the floor and was excited and got real low and had a great defensive possession. Pikiell has to keep his minutes down....no matter what!

Agree that over time, he needs to train himself use his left hand more and to go strong to his left, and work on his shooting.

My OP comments were directed at two things he can do immediately, in the very next game, that only require him to alter his thinking slightly.

I agree with you on this.

Corey has had some TERRIBLE turnovers when it comes to ball handling, mostly his passing. If he can get that under control, the Offense will shine.
The offense will not shine because there are a lack of shooters on the team for Sanders to pass the ball to.Better decision making on passing would reduce turnovers which would be a positive but still doesn't address the issue of lack of talent.

To be fair it's hard to be a threat passing when penetrating when he doesn't have anyone who can finish around the basket.

Maybe I should've come back with more input.

I agree with you on most of it. I say that because there is talent on the floor. Johnson, Laurent, and Diallo have potential to be great. We've seen them showcase their talent.

Also, ball handling is one of the most crucial elements of offense. If you can't hold on to the ball or make lousy passes, that's 2, potentially 3 points you gave away.

*Another thing they HAVE to work on their free throws.

for me he needs to cut out those ill fated forces to the hoop into 3 guys, it got him an ankle sprain the last time vs Wisconsin. Better decision making there and can clean up the sloppy turnovers with the passing.

Regarding the OP's first point:

For all of the high picks our bigs set in our half court offense, I don't think the ballhandler has actually passed back during the roll ONCE all year. It's really a waste.

And now, because we never pass to the roller, the guy guarding the roller is hedging out very high (because he doesn't have to worry about a bounce pass to our big) and it's disrupting our offense greatly because our ballhandler has to bump way out toward half court to evade the hedge.

People go overboard with this stuff. Gettys, Sa, Doorson, and Freeman haven't finished around the basket?

They have...plenty of times. But it's usually the result of offensive rebounds or scrappy plays. Sometimes it takes 2-3 shots per possession to get it in the bucket.

I'm not knocking these guys at all. They definitely give it their all but you can't tell me any of those 4 are legit options to consistently be relied on to receive a pass from Sanders and go up strong to the hoops vs. BIG10 bigs. ...especially SA and Doorson!

I think we have more dunks off of passes in the half court thrown by forwards and centers compared to guards.

Don't get me wrong our bigs are bad at finishing and our shooters are bad at shooting. However at some point you have to take a step back and ask is at all on them OR are the guards or even the offense failing getting better looks. I believe it is on both parties. Nigel and Corey seem to me to have a ON/OFF switch where they are either scorers or passers. It seems like it is either one or the other and not both.

Time is now. He can be in the NBA, but certain things need to happen.

I am a huge supporter of Sanders. He is a great kid. I want him to get to the next level.

Great post, though.Still unsure of what our bigs possess off a roll. I have thought of that a lot, but Gettys needs space to hit that pick and pop.

Gettys is used to it, and there is a reason they are not using it that often. If he was amazing at it, and could execute, the coach would get a huge minus.

His guards last year hardly ever passed on a pick and roll last year. I am talking he came out to set a pick 100 times, and maybe got the ball n the roll five times. It was like that. Watch the tape.

Actually, Corey is the only guard that passes to CJ or Deshawn on the pick and roll . Unfortunately our bigs rarely convert . Nigel on the other hand, never ever passes to the Big setting the pick and has totally stopped passing from the wing to the post when we are on the block. That has to be corrected immediately, especially if the Big is picked up , then they can dish back out to Nigel for the jumper.
The passes across too many bodies by Corey was uncharacteristic and a function of how bad our spacing was for Maryland. Corey was trying to get it to Nigel in the corner for threes twice and it was not even Nigel's man that intercepted , it was Jackson , who was guarding our 3 0r 4 and not in the right spot. Spacing will insure the kick outs are there and it must be reinforced.
Corey looked like he got tired in the second half as he also lost his man on defense a few times which has not been happening over the last 5-6 games. That led to some of his careless turnovers. Really need our bigs to flush the ball when they get it from him more often.

Also:
1. When you're around the foul line (distance) look to stop / pop: this will help three ways
a. will add points on the board
b. will open up other team mates for crisper easier passes (see earlier criticism)
c. May help you regain confidence in your J....and even your 3 ball
2. Practice your FT (you should be at 75% minimum / your goal should be >80%)

Freeman is all HEART. He plays hard...but he tries to do too much.

He's been stuffed too many times. He's bumbled or loss the ball too many times. He also misses a lot of bunnys.
Last, Freeman thought about a 15-18 footer, thought again / then shot and missed badly.
Just react.

As for Sa- I'm not sure he's comfortable or knows what his shot is.

Doorson is #3 now...since Diallo has been coming on for rebounds, blocks and D.
Gettys has his moves around the basket and seems to be playing a little more aggressively on D...he's actually blocking some shots or causing
them to be altered.

We're trying... very trying.

Williams / Johnson have been held more in check (each needs to be a threat for RU to be effective).

Only Corey (heart / talent, emotion) ...with his drives / spins etc. has been lighting it up.
He needs to hit his FT's / he needs to be able to HIT THE J / 3 BALL for this year / next to be more successful.

For the pick and roll guys: We set our picks above the 3 pt circle. Agree? Where on the court would you like the pass to hit the big man on the roll? Are our big men rolling all the way to the hoop unguarded? No way. Ok, do you want them catching the ball 15 feet away, put it on the deck, and make a move around a help defender? We don't have anyone that can do that. There's a reason we don't hit the roll guy. We don't have the personal for it. Our big guys need to be put in a situation where all they have to do is catch and shoot. Even when we get that, it's a challenge for them to finish with any consistency. You have to know your personal.

Yes the pick has 2 purposes.

1. Screen the opposing guard
2. Get the opposing 5 out of the paint

If we were looking for a pick and roll we wouldn't be doing it with Gettys. Catch, dribble and layup in traffic not the forte.

Corey has clearly bought in to what the staff is teaching. His conditioning this year vs. last is off the charts better. His effort has been more consistent and he is having less "lost minutes" when he gets frustrated by a call, etc. Best of all, he is defending.

He is a sophomore and is being asked to play way too much on the ball, with nobody on the court that can hurt the defense from deep when they run multiple people at him. I hope he sees the improvement and commits to being at RU four years. He can make money playing basketball somewhere based solely on his athleticism, but if he is patient and lets this staff continue to develop him (and get him off the ball a bit next year), I really think the sky is the limit for him. I really appreciate the way he is playing this year.

When a screener rolls and is open, he must get the ball passed to him. It forces another defender to leave their man to cover the rolling screener. This opens up the offense so that one more bounce pass may get you a layup.

If no defender helps or is late in doing so, then Gettys, Sa, Freeman or Diallo will only need one bounce before getting to the hole, possibly for a dunk.

If there's nothing there then you pass it back out but at least you've created potentially productive movement and open spaces where you have a purposeful offensive flow.

Contrast that to our guards ignoring the open roller and instead putting their heads down and plowing into the trees.

.
IF no defender helps. How often does that happen in B1G play? These teams are too good to allow such a simple defensive breakdown to occur. In reality, what has happened is one of our bigs has to put it on the deck in traffic. How has that worked out for us?
Watch the games. Our bigs are turnover machines when they dribble down low. Freeman especially. Frankly, I'm shocked that coach Pike hasn't instituted a ONE dibble maximum for Freeman when he's in the post. His greatest offensive asset is his quickness. By dribbling 3, 4, 5 times, he's taking away his own strengths. He does have success when he makes a quick move, one dribble, and up.

You're making my point. When a defender helps, they are leaving an open man underneath. Gettys, Sa, Diallo and Freeman have all shown they are capable passers who can find that open man with a pass.

the humorous part of this is people are posting like they think Coach P cant see this & isnt aware of any of it.

Part of the reason Sanders doesnt kick the ball out might be that when it does happen...be it Sa, Thiam, Williams et al..... they fumble the opportunity or miss. I think he has resigned himself that HE has the best % chance of hitting the bucket.

Sometimes within the rotation neither of the other two "producers" (Gettys & Freeman)are out there & he is ALONE on "O".....but YES..I rarely see him draw the 2 and 3 defenders to him & lob it to the open man under the bucket....it doesnt seem to be part of his game.

And I do agree about the lazy passes......he of all people chuck a lazy looper WAY too often......it takes the momentum away from an already fragile O.....

I also suggest not pounding the floor to piss off the other team.
