Who are college football's rising stars in the head coaching ranks?

11. Chris Ash, Rutgers
Ash has his work cut out for him at Rutgers. After all, this program is facing a tough road in the Big Ten East Division on an annual basis and has slipped in the recruiting rankings after hauling in the No. 24 class in 2012. However, Ash looks like the right coach to get the Scarlet Knights trending in the right direction. The Iowa native worked as an assistant at Drake (1997-99), Iowa State (2000-06, 2009), San Diego State (2007-08), Wisconsin (2010-12), Arkansas (2013) and Ohio State (2014-15) before taking the top spot at Rutgers. Ash is regarded for his work on the defensive side of the ball and seems to have a detailed plan on how to help this program move forward in the Big Ten after stints with the Buckeyes and Badgers. It may take a year or two to recruit and upgrade the overall roster talent, but Ash seems to have Rutgers on track in its third year of Big Ten play.

Still time to do this road trip. Make it a 2 week vacation and experience the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. You won't be disappointed.

Can't wait to go it's gonna be so much fun Seattle was awesome for the Cougars game.

So when Wash State lost to us, they "couged it".
If Wash loses to us, will this be a case of "man bites dog" or something else?

7. WASHINGTON HUSKIES
2015 RECORD: 7–6

The Huskies have to find some go-to receivers, but are salivating at the potential improvement of sophomore running back Myles Gaskin, who last season became the first UW true freshman to go over 1,000 rushing yards (1,302 yards, 14 TDs).

The best defense in the conference brings back plenty of playmakers, led by Budda Baker, who’s totaled 111 tackles and three interceptions in two seasons. He flat-out scares opposing offenses, and they throw away from him as much as possible. That gives his teammates lots of interception opportunities (UW forced 27 turnovers last year).

TOP 25 BREAKOUT PLAYERS OF 2016

13. Kemoko Turay, DE, Rutgers
2016 grade: 80.4 | 2015 snaps: 239

Turay was on this list a year ago on the strength of his pass rush ability and athleticism, and he’s back on the list after failing to earn full-time snaps in 2015. He continued his strong pass rushing with an 82.8 mark after grading at 81.4 as a rusher in 2014. The last two years, Turay has picked up 10 sacks, 15 QB hits, and 44 hurries on only 382 rushes. The key in 2016 will be to improve against the run and get on the field for at least 500-plus snaps. If he does, expect Turay to notch a 10-sack season and grab the attention of NFL scouts.

No. 10: Washington.
My pick to win the Pac-12 based on returning quarterback (Jake Browning), first-class defense and favorable schedule (Stanford and USC at home, no UCLA). But I’m not convinced the Pac-12 champ will be one of the top teams nationally. The conference is deep, but from this vantage point, it lacks an elite team. (Previous: 12)

This shows how out of touch these people are.
Our D Line has been recognized by our staff as the strength of our team, that assessment is without Turay.

Maybe that his upside potential is much over even current?

Zappaa-if you would and saw I'm (former season ticketholder) very curious to your opinion on the A-Rod ceremony (maybe under my A-Rod thread)? Was it appropriate? Too little? Bringng Lou Pijella into the pic. Would like to see several opinions-maybe you're too close to Hal, yada. Then again, from the perspective of A-=Rod...

I knew A-rod was a dick when he left the Mariners for the Rangers. Fvk him.

Alaska, the horrible truth is that the PAC 12 network doesn't appear on the most watched cable providers here in NJ so a lot of us Scarlet Knights won't even be able to watch the Washington game. Unless of course someone is kind enough to post a logon name and password to a provider that does carry the PAC 12 network...

The PAC Network is a bad joke and the reason the current PAC comish needs to go. What kind of P5 network doesn't have a deal with DTV? That PAC, that's who.

RANKING THE TOP 5 RETURNING QBS IN THE PAC-12
Washington's Jake Browning leads our list of the best returning signal-callers in the PAC-12.
  1. Jake Browning, Washington (+21.6 overall)
The first of two true sophomores on this list, Browning was one of the more impressive freshmen quarterbacks in the country and was named the PFF All-Freshman team starter. He completed 233 of 370 passes (63 percent) for 2,955 yards with 16 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Browning’s +17.5 passing grade ranks No. 3 among returning Pac-12 quarterbacks and No. 8 among returning Power-5 quarterbacks.

Browning’s 75.2 adjusted completion percentage ranks No. 5 among returning Power-5 quarterbacks. Browning was most effective in 2015 over the middle and throwing to his left, with only one of this touchdowns coming on a pass targeted to his right. Browning’s 50.0 percent accuracy on passes targeted 20 yards or more downfield ranks No. 6 among returning FBS quarterbacks.

@Alaska_Dawg can you give us a breakdown of what we should expect out of UW? Like formations wise, style wise, playmakers, players to watch, prediction on RU UW matchup?

UW runs a pro style single back offense. Seeing how its the first game of the season, and the fact UW has zero game film on an Ash coached Rutgers team, you can expect more from the running game than you can from the passing game. I'm guessing some safe passes for the most part ... bubble screens, throws to the RB, etc...

Other than Washington RB Myles Gaskin, the playmakers are on the defensive side of the ball. Budda Baker - safety (SI pre season All American), Sydney Jones - CB (All PAC-12), Azeem Victor - LB (2nd team All PAC-12), Elijah Qualls - DT etc... the defense is loaded even after losing two guys to this last NFL draft.

I'm going to predict a Washington win .. something like 27 - 13.

Preseason College Football Rankings 2016: Predicting the AP's Top 25

No. 17 Washington
By and large, most of the teams that end up in the preseason rankings were also in the final poll of the previous season. They're moved around a bit, but a high percentage of the same names appear on both lists every time.

Nineteen of the 25 schools in the 2015 preseason poll were in the final 2014 rankings, down from 20 that were in both the final 2013 and first 2014 polls. We're projecting 20 similarities, with Washington in line to be the highest-rated of the newcomers.

The Huskies were 7-6 last season but were impressive in their final three games, doing so with a young lineup. That group now gets viewed as more experienced and thus deserving of greater respect (i.e., rankings). While coach Chris Petersen has equated this hype to Pokemon Go, there's always a team like this that uses a strong finish to the previous season to leap into the preseason poll.
