I don't follow WNBA too closely, but first I thought Gustafson falling to the second round in the draft was odd, and then her getting cut so fast was beyond bizarre. Must be more to the story?

Not necessarily. Without knowing any details I can still say -
1 - there are a lot more players who are potential WNBA'ers than there are roster spots.
2 - I don't know who else she was (directly) competing against in the team's plans - both on the court and also in the salary cap field (not so much her salary itself, but I just saw about a team that had to either cut 2 rookies or 1 veteran)
3 - the WNBA requires a somewhat different skill set than college WBB. Someone who saw one of the pre-season games suggested she was winded and slow (comparatively).

The suggestion several made was that she should head overseas and come back stronger next year. Several Rutgers players have done so over the years, so it isn't a bad idea.
