This may be common knowledge but I didn’t know the students picked the Scarlet Knight mascot over the Queensman, Red Lions, Scarlet, or Flying Dutchmen in 1955.

Might have wanted to honor that kid that saved Holland when he put his finger in the Dike
The Flying Finger Dikes nickname could get some people to fall into a tither and come up all sorts of objections .

Actually with our reputation of being so cheap ( past tense I now believe). Being The Dutch may been apporoprite (with respect to The Dutch people as I'm referring to the act of going it).
Yes - Hofstra used to be the Flying Dutchmen. They are now the Pride. I know, a ridiculous nickname.
A Haunted Ship never able to make port. Kinda sounds like us in a nautical way.
