I posted this in a different thread, but wanted to reduce it to the simplest terms.

WITHOUT Carroo, Laviano has 3 TDs and Rettig has 2. So IF, Rettig had the ability to play with our best WR, his numbers would most likely be better. I bring this up because the defenders of Laviano say that "Rettig hasn't played against the 1st team defense." Well that's true, but that is not his fault, but it is also very true that he hasn't played with our complete 1st team offense. I don't know if this is deliberate by Flood, and it doesn't matter, but it is weird.

For the record, I am not suggesting that Rettig be the new starter (MAYBE that proves to be the case, but we don't know.) I am suggesting that he get in blowout games before we get HALF WAY THROUGH THE FOURTH QUARTER!! He should have been in both the OSU and Wisconsin games somewhere in the 3rd, even if it was to give legitimate playing experience. What I see from Laviano right now is more thinking and less instinct, I don't find that helpful at the QB position, coach him up on the sidelines, let him catch his breath (literally and figuratively) and see if he rebounds. Setting either QB up to fail is a stupid proposition, and our current head coach is actually doing it to BOTH of them.

End of rant.

The coaches will do right for Rettig. For example when Rutgers played Notre Dame the coaches had Dodd play instead of Nova. The exposure for Dodd helped get him noticed for a professional career. I expect Rettig to play a lot but I don't think it will be this year.

Exactly. Make a change in the 3rd Qtr of colossal blowouts. At least see if someone else can jump start the O. I think the QB's need to be in rotation too and I mean, find out what you have in Rescigno as well, flawed release and all (if that's the case).

If he's as mobile as has been reported, run a package; an abbreviated game plan for him. Use his mobility as a weapon for a change of pace. Hell, draw up a read-option that's so successful every Saturday with teams that have dual threat QB's. (I'm not suggesting converting to the spread). Add the wrinkle. What have you got to lose?

Getting the backup QB's valuable experience has always been a problem for RU. (GS was horrible at it too). In blowouts, ya never know what could happen with a change at QB. A few series on the pine, especially during blowouts, isn't going retard the growth/learning curve of CL. There is such a thing as good stress/tension and it works both ways. A change of perspective and fear of loss (of PT or the starting job) will kick in and that's where the learning curve accelerates, data processes faster, synapses fire faster, muscles twitch quicker...or not.

He'll either grow in quantum leap fashion, like we see so many freshman, RS freshman and RS sophomore QB's do across the country at elite, football factory type programs, or you'll find out that you need to make a change and sooner, rather than later. But you can't continue to reward poor play with more play. There has to be a threat lurking in the background, pushing players to become better and make good decisions, under fire.

I wonder if any reporter has ever asked him where he picked up this strategy of not substituting your QB early or making a switch during the season. smh. Unreal.
