Duke Will have its whole staff at the John Wall Holiday for 2024 PG Dylan Harper

Just back from the event - solid hoops

DH was very solid - guys just bounce off him (he’s a solid 6’5” and a thick kid who just drips w talent). Best player on the court their game - albeit against a not stellar Garner HS team.

Best guy we saw all day was Drake Powell - 4star headed to UNC. Dude was a stud

Jackson Keith v Colt Langdon - couple stud sophs going head to head was fun too

Could not stay for night cap - DJ Wagner and Camden Vs local Panther Creek (strong program)

Will be back tomorrow

Their current coach has no history of doing anything

It's not like Dylan can't be a 1 and done at Rutgers. He has a famous NBA father and brother and is a 5 star recruit. He's already on everyone's radar. He would be playing in the B1G against excellent competition getting great exposure. Less likely he loses playing time or doesn't get to be "the man" at RU than at Duke
People are gonna be mad at me for this but, nba drafts guys to score. If u wanna be a one and done RU probably isnt the place to do it. Our offensive system is well, offensive

To be clear, you're saying he's not coming here right? Please be saying this.
I have no idea. I have zero bball connects.

However when i make predictions im right 90%+. One of the best to do it here

Dylan has a big decision …does he want to be part of the continuing history or does he want to take a chance on being a part of making history ….

This isn’t Jason Williams , with Rutgers being a generatio removed from being on the national scene

We are in the big ten

We have been in the ncaa three years in a row (yes, I count 2019-2020)

We have the facilities and Canpus life

We have the home court Atmosphere

Even his brother …one of the most revered players in Rutgers basketbal history …said about his own bother …”can be the greatest in scarlet all time”….

My hunch …

Dylan just doesn’t want to be a one man band …

Put the class together …

.we have Derek and Gavin …

.go get Dylan , Tyler , Airous , Deliquan (three of four) and a rim protector

And …I think it does …..happen

His less talented brother scored plenty here. Dylan will have plenty of opportunities to score if he comes here and will be the focal point of the offense

I believe Dylan is considering Rutgers because he and his family saw how Pike and staff recruited AND coached/mentored/developed his brother Ron. Dylan and his Mom and Dad saw first hand how Pike sells himself and his program AND exactly how Pike DELIVERS. Every day. Practices, conditioning, home games, away, classes, summer sessions. The whole deal.

Duke is just recruiting.

HUMONGOUS difference.
Not entirely similar but analogous to why Brian Leonard chose Rutgers, becoming an iconic RU football player.

I want him here bad but how do you turn down duke? Theyre history of getting guys to the nba is insane. Especially if your goal is one and done. They have more #1 overall picks than we have total draft picks this century
At Duke, Dylan will be another player.

At Rutgers, Dylan will be freakin dude, the R Hoops program will explode with MORE press, MORE winning, championships. The RAC will be MORE insane because of him. NBA scouts/GMs will probably hear MORE about Dylan at Rutgers, than they would with Dylan in the rathole that is Durham. Dylan is too smart to turn down Rutgers.

This is just silly. Duke is one of if not the highest profile program in the country AND the ACC will be all over ESPN daily.

And that is exactly my point. Dylan will singlehandedly INCREASE/ELEVATE Rutgers’ national profile.

You hope his affiliation to RU wins out but the fact is the big ten doesn’t put kids in the nba like the top 2 conferences do, and not even as well the pac12 does, and Duke puts a ton of guys in the league.

The plus side is the basketball program and staff is equipped with everything that is possibly needed resource wise to land him.

1) what value is there in him being the guy here vs maybe the #2 at duke?

2) you realize if hes a one and done he might never actually play a game at the rac due to renovations right?

3) nba scouts will see/hear more about him at RU than Duke? LOL come on

This would be the equivalence of a top qb prospect from NJ turning down Lincoln Riley to come to RU after riley and staff went in person to see him play because they wanted him so bad

I hate ppl that post what scarlet posted.

That’s the fan pitch to him but no coach is saying any of that

In putting kids in the league
Is this a thing that you think can be attributed to a conference? Is the "ACC", as an organization, helping to put these people into the NBA? Would you recruit against Gonzaga by saying that the West Coast Conference does not put many people in the NBA, relatively speaking?

Yes and that happens. How well it works depends on the year.

It seems to me that the reasons to go to Duke are
(1) prestige
(2) (in the past) related to (1), playing for Coach K
(3) related to (1), rabid basketball fanbase
(4) the opportunity to play for championships

(I am leaving out $$$ but sure there is an impact there as well)

(1) cannot be underestimated, but some care much more about it than others. (2) no longer exists. We are almost getting to the point where we can legitimately pitch that a team with Dylan and Gavin on it could compete for a championship so we are closing the gap on (4)

All of the NBA stuff seems like a complete red herring to me. Duke excels at putting players in the league because they excel at recruiting NBA talent. Whatever coaching impact there was.. well there's a new coach now, so who knows? Dylan is not going to have any issues getting to the NBA from Rutgers.

What do you think 16/17/18 year olds are? Haha
Some of them are idiots but I'm pretty skeptical this even works on them. Pitt is going to recruit people by pointing to how many people Duke puts in the NBA? Because it's the "ACC"?

Also, most recent draft:
Big Ten 9
SEC 8
ACC 7
P12 6
B12 4
BE 3
WCC 2

If I had an NBA ready kid I sure wouldn't send him to Kansas. He has more than twice as good a shot in the Big Ten!

Conferences don’t put players in the NBA over others - that’s just silly. The biggest advantage (perhaps only advantage outside of NIL) of choosing a brand name like Duke as a top incoming recruit is mitigating the downside risk of not getting drafted if you don’t have an impactful frosh year. A Jaden Jones type season at Rutgers (even as a top 30 recruit) probably wipes you out of draft contention until you prove yourself at the collegiate level. At Kentucky or Duke, you were sitting behind other 5 stars so you might still be drafted based on potential even without ever being an impact college player.

So UCONN is around 15 point favorites tomorrow night. You’re saying I should take Nova to win or say lose by 3 or less? Or need Moore back then they are cooking?
I think Nova beats them tonight

I would say that where he goes to school has almost no bearing on his draft status. Anthony Edwards went to play for a crappy coach on a crappy team (Tom Crean, Georgia) and was the #1 overall pick. Ditto for Markelle Fultz and Ben Simmons. Cade Cunningham went to noted NBA factory Oklahoma State.

Zion and Banchero getting #1 overall had zero to do with the fact they went to Duke.

Right, people are getting cause and effect way mixed up with the Duke => NBA thing.

The only argument I could see is that the talent and the Duke brand would help carry him if he had a bad season but nobody as good as Dylan Harper is factoring "what if I'm not as good as people think" into their college choice. Besides, Patrick Baldwin Jr. was a complete bust at UW Milwaukee playing for his dad (he picked them over Duke) and was still a first rounder.

Have Dylan watch the Dick Vitale interview with him crying about how Rutgers turned him down for the HC. Vitale knew something special when he saw it and how big Rutgers could become. RU typically makes he worst decisions for their future.

Also let Dylan know that if he doesn't like his time here after the first year he can always transfer to Duke like Dahntay Jones did and still get to the NBA

I agree that it’s not Duke developing players into the draft, but rather Duke recruiting and signing blue chip talent that is destined for the NBA.

But I think the thing Dylan will ask himself is whether Pike’s “system” will allow him to shine in his one or two years. In other words, some schools — Kentucky, Duke, UNC, Kansas — are just set up to funnel players to the draft, and are willing to let these types of 1/2 and done players to run the team.

Is Pike willing to do this? Will he let Dylan run ISO repeatedly? Will he NOT pull Dylan for missing defensive assignments (like he does with other players)? I don’t know.
