If anybody had any doubt that Flood is clueless, it should have gone by the wayside with his call to punt when we had 4th and 2 at the tOSU 40 in the 2Q, down 7-0 at the time. Did he really expect a defensive dual? Did he really think that we were going to continually stop tOSU on offense? If so, it means that he hasn't observed our D at all this year, nor did he watch any tOSU game film.

The d played pretty decent the 1st half, but i thought they should have gone for it too. A moment like the indiana game...

What Elmer Fludd--and many of our posters--don't understand is that for a program like rutgers to make real forward strides and win big games we have to take some chances and push the envelope sometimes. Slow and steady was not going to win this game for us, nor will it win many games against better opponents, and it won't lead to much progress for the program. We've been singing this song for some time and the reality is that the program stalled in upward momentum a decade ago.

Did you guys miss the first drive were he went in 4th? I'm not saying I agree with punting but you guys are really just looking for things to bitch about with this. If we he went and we got stuffed you'd be screaming the same thing bc it was the turning point. Lots of legitimate gripes......this ain't one

There is nothing we could've done to win this game, we were out manned, (recruiting), out coached, (Flood v Meyer, really? ), and out played. If you are happy with beating bad teams and getting blown out by anyone with a pulse, congrats...we're there.

Does MSU have a pulse?

You win, I was wondering how long it would take for someone to bring up the 'big win' against MSU, that Flood didn't even coach because he was suspended for a rule he insists that he didn't know about, lol...congrats.
You said we get blown out by anyone with a pulse. I asked a simple question.......can you not answer it? WAZZU now 5-2.....pulse? Maybe you should stop being so melodramatic and just say we aren't where you want us to be.

Check out Michigan States results for this season...they are a good team but far from unbeatable. You're doing the same thing as many did last season, you give far more credit for wins against bad teams and close losses against anyone else than you give accountability for bad losses and very bad program management.

If beating Indiana every year and playing Michigan State close every once in a while is the goal, then mission accomplished.

MSU is 8-0, beat Indiana by 30 today, and beat Michigan last week. If I told you in August we would lose in the last minute to an 8-0 MSU team you would have told me I was crazy. I have to ask wants your goal? And no, we aren't spending 5 million on a coach.

Actually, I would've told you that we had the talent to compete with anyone on the schedule...I've been saying that every since Fludd went 9-4 in his first season with our most talented team ever and watched it go down hill ever since.

Stop trying to pick apart everything everyone says... He's just venting on a message board, not prove to the good people on the jury beyond a shadow of a doubt. We're all cranky about the current state of things.

has there ever been a bigger coaching mismatch in the history of CFB (Terry frickin Shea included) than Flood vs. Meyer ?

The repeated punting infuriated me. It wasn't even just that one instance, it was the whole game. You punt to get better field position, but every one of our punts resulted in an OSU touchdown except for the last one where they could have kicked a field goal but gave us a chance to stop them with a run instead, but even that one did nothing for field position because they quickly brought the ball right back to where we punted from anyway.

This was a pattern that persisted all game long. We would punt, and then a couple plays later our defense would be lining up right where our punting unit was only a few seconds prior.

If we would have just kept going for it on fourth down, we would have increased our number of plays available to get the ten yards by 33%, and our defense wasn't stopping them no matter where their drive was starting from anyway so it wouldn't really have mattered if we turned it over on downs. If we went for it on fourth down, we may have missed a few times, but at least we would have given our offense a chance to keep their drive going and keep our outmatched defense off the field. I know it sounds ridiculous because punting is just conventional, and it wouldn't have made the difference between winning and losing this game, but even if we went for it on fourth down and failed every single time, we literally would have not have been any worse off than we were by punting. Might as well have just gone for it on every fourth down instead of just handing the ball over.

Yes it is, he mis-managed the entire set of downs, starting with a ridiculous timeout after a nice third down conversion.
Than like a jack ass went empty backfield on third and two and telegraphed his lame short pass call.
We were in four down territory, and he would have gone for it if was 4th and 1.
We would have made two yards if we ran the ball twice there.

The worst part for me is that we were clearly giving up on drives...so many times we got into 2nd or 3rd and moderate/long and it seemed we called a safe play and punted...Flood really wasn't trying to win this game, keep it close was the strategy.

I was completely perplexed when he punted. We got a net gain of 20 yards. It really wouldn't have mattered if we pinned OSU at their own 1 yard line they would've still scored. Our only chance in this game was to keep the ball away from the OSU offense. After decisions like that I really start to question if we have the right guy. Against the #1 team you let it all hang out, trick plays, go for it on 4th, etc.

exactly my thoughts not that I am a football genius

I am a supporter of Flood, but he made a mistake on 3rd down here.... The best thing would have been to look at the 3rd and two, with two running plays to get first down.... Not a pass then punt...

We did blow it..

MSU has been playing everyone close, Western Michigan, Oregon, even most of the Indiana game. That is just the kind of team they are. My guess is they will lose to tOSU and maybe one other team will shock them.

You are in for a very long couple years if you really think we have the same talent to compete with OSU, UM etc. Like someone said late Saturday night we could have had Vince Lombardi on the sideline and we will have still been killed.

The fact that we don't have the talent to atleast compete is dissapointing, what's worse is that Flood has proven over the past 4 years that he can't recruit the talent needed to compete. Getting rid of Flood is not change for the sake of change as some suggest. The longer he is the head coach the worse off we are in the long run.

and yet other teams with equal talent can still compete with them...

We missed the FG which was obvious.

Awful special teams are just another hallmark of the Flood error.
but, but, but didn't you hear..he hs a special relationship with Coach Flood. ?

(why else would we be unable to find somebody to kick Fgoals with more consistency and in bigger moments than our 4th year senior...not that Flood hasn't has 3 years to find one himself. And yeah..I know he got one right at the end vs. Indy)

The topic of that 4th down call is fair. And it doesn't matter if that was the difference in the game. It is a question of attitude.

Football is an aggressive sport and we do not act aggressively enough. And this is not new with Flood. Consider his signature win over the Brady Hoke led Michigan team. Instead of deciding we are in 4-down territory and calling plays on 3rd and 4th down to get a first, he pulls a lame fake punt and hands then the ball in our territory. That is not aggression... that is desperation. He has had better moments for fake kicks.

The sad thing is we have seen some moments where the play calls are aggressive and the team responds. But that makes all the overly cautious stuff all the more maddening.

I guess Old Dominion didn't have a kicker committed, or one wasn't transferring, as those are the two main methods of Flood recruiting.

THIS....its a trademark of Flood to give up on drives when its 2nd and long. He did it against freaking Army his first year, a game which was an epic death struggle for no reason. His insistence on playing offense without the mindset of wanting to score on every drive screams not meant for this level. Remember the Pitt game a few years back...great field position the first few drives but calling inane and conservative plays and not taking chances, Pitt meanwhile woke up and blew us out and RU lost the BCS bid because of this loss not the UL loss

It's a trademark of many of our fans that they are trapped in the past and don't see how absurd his mindset it. How many times on here have I had scraps with people over the laughably outdated idea of "ball control" offense? Controlling the ball, running time off the clock and keeping the opposing offense off the field worked as a game plan in 1975 when it took everyone 7 or 8 minutes to score. But that idea is extremely watered down--at best--if not worthless or even self-defeating, in today's game where MANY teams have offenses designed to and perfectly capable of scoring 2 or 3 TDs in 7 or 8 minutes. Eat up the clock and all you are doing is making it harder for YOUR own slow offense to get back into the game if it falls behind. The pro set we run is beyond passe and the luke warm desire to score is inexplicable. It works for Alabama.

I would have went for it as well and agree the 3rd down was a bad call by McDaniels.

I am a little baffled about the ST's comments though. Over the last 3 years, we still have led CFB in blocked kicks but now we also return kicks for TD's. KFed also had one of our best year's kicking last year. And please help me out here but the last I looked Schiano came up with one good kicker and punter during his time here. And who had Ito punting one year and Te was much worse then anyone Flood has had out there.

I think with special teams the big negative is Federico. His 4 years here have been mediocre at best. The constant life and death on extra points and then missing a chippie that killed any momentum isn't winning him any fan. Glad he is a senior. Who is coming in next season?

I don't disagree, yet he had one of our best years kicking last year...I thought he may have turned the corner and was expecting a big year from him. My point is tht it is the one area it doesn't make any sense to call Schiano a ST's genius and Flood a failure. We still block kicks but now added the big return as well. And let's be completely honest- outside of blocking kicks, Ito and Radigan...Schiano did not have the best track record.

Yup he only had the record most blocked kicks in the country. He also led ST scoring nationally more than once.

But who needs facts.

Can I just ask why the pro-Flood crowd feels their arguments are bolstered by bashing Schiano, when Schiano was superior to Flood in absolutely every single facet of being HC? That doesn't mean Schiano was a world beater- but he was way, way, way better than Flood at absolutely everything.
