ESPN 2024-25 preseason top 25 men's college basketball rankings

Notice how many teams have huge turnover and question marks. The Top 25 is wide open this season. RU could end up in the Top 25, or not ... none of us know.

Also, notice how many teams are relying on transfers from lower level schools to produce - according to the write-ups of various teams.

Yet the RU write-up does not mention the so-called credentials of the RU transfers. While RU's ultimate performance this season will rely very, very heavily on the performance of Harper and Bailey, the write-up of RU only mentions RU's transfers by name, not mentioning that Derkack was both Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year in his conference, or that Acuff was the #7 scorer in the NCAA last year (albeit, both for weak conferences). Now most of us think those 2 are just reserves, agreeing with the write-up. But even so ... Just saying ...

Still, if this pre-season ranking is worth anything, it does put RU in the Top 5 of the Big Ten. Which is kind of cool.

I mean Derkack has barely been mentioned in write ups by RU focused media, which says to me he probably isn't going to be a big contributor this year. Acuff has been hurt, so no one is really sure what he is at this level with a good team around him. More in depth stories would mention them.

All teams are going to have this kind of turnover moving forward.

Regarding Derkack - he's certainly someone we should have more confidence in being able to contribute than many of the guys from last season that needed to play big minutes. Same with Acuff - when he is healthy, I think we can expect more from him than from the guards we lost. The depth is now guys that have proven they can contribute heavily in lower-level conferences. Even if there is a drop-off coming to a major conference, that's still an upgrade.

Can't wait!

I expect more than most from Acuff, but why should anyone expect more from Derkack than guys from LY? I have zero idea what to expect, but you telling me you don't think Simpson could light it up wherever Derkack came from? I guarantee Aundre Hyatt, despite his flaws is a bigger contributor.

You think Hyatt, or Oskar, who was closer to what Derkack will be replacing as a possible rotation guy off the bench, would be as good enough to win the Northeast Conference Player of the Year or NEC Defensive Player of the Year , if they played for Merrimack? I strongly disagree, although Hyatt as a scorer is likely as good as Derkack could be.

Derkack won't score more than Hyatt did last season, but that's not going to be his role. Hyatt's average output in games since Jeremiah Williams returned was just under 8 ppg (95 pts in 12 games), 5.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.6 steals, and 0.6 blocks. He shot 34.4% from the floor and went 11-26 (26.2%) from 3.

If I could have only one of Hyatt or Derkack coming off the bench for this year's team, I pick Derkack easily.

Interesting perspective ... Cannot say I disagree with the reasoning.

Though I am not sure Derkack can score as much as 8 ppg, since I would not be surprised if he gets less than 15 mpg this year, presuming Acuff gets 100% healthy. I would guess a healthy Acuff actually fills the Hyatt off the bench role (offensive igniter off the bench, maybe the 6th man) ... HE could average 8 ppg in 15-20 mpg (better shooter than Derkack).

Derkack is a guy who needs the ball in his hands to be remotely effective on the offensive end. Neither Hyatt or Oskar are anywhere near like for like, they were our 4's last year. Simpson is the guy I mentioned, and yeah, I think he could win those in the NEC. Derkack will have a bench role, likely as 8th or 9th man, but it feels like he's behind Hayes on the wing.
I don't think many guys stats improved once J Will got here.

I singled out Hyatt because you said you guarantee he would be a bigger contributor than Derkack, despite Hyatt's flaws. Hyatt and Derkack are both listed as 6' 6" on scarletknights.com, although Hyatt is 20# heavier. I think of Derkack as more of a 2/3 than a 3/4. Simpson would have been a bench guy this year, too - maybe the 3rd guard off the bench, too, behind Acuff and Davis.

I agree Derkack's minutes are likely dependent on either beating out Acuff/Davis for G minutes, or Hayes for minutes at the 3, and his playing time is likely to be vary based on if we need more D or O on the floor.

This is a non issue. There is one paragraph about each team and obviously the focus is on Dylan and Ace, not a bench role player

I probably should have been a little more specific mentioning Hyatt since he turned into a starter, even if he probably shouldn't have been. Take Hyatt off the bench from two years ago, not his last year. Played about 18 per, scored 7 per, 3 boards, shot 33% from three in the games he didn't start. These are the average numbers I don't think Derkack hits.
I do think he'll probably play that much on certain nights, but there are so many rotation guys there at the 2/3. If Dylan and JD are being considered the 1's, we need shooting at the 2/3. Maybe Derkack goes for defense when Acuff is out there, and JWill is the defensive wing when Hayes is there when Ace is at the 4? I still think the main starting group will be Dylan, 2, (JWill), Ace, martini, EO.
