I don't think I saw this posted elsewhere. It's an estimate from the NCAA, using what I'd describe as rough but reasonable methods, on the size of the NIL collectives for each school. https://nil-ncaa.com/big10/?utm_source=chatgpt.com

The estimated number is the "Collective Funding" category. It's based on estimates derived from the other numbers. Total support is total support to the schools' official athletics programs from boosters/donors and ticket sales. Contributions are donations directly to the school to support athletics.

Based on this I'd say Pike and Schiano are pretty brilliant. If I had time I'd do a metric showing which schools do the most with the least. But RU would be near the top.

New Jersey is one of the richest states per capita income. At the same time there always has been little interest in supporting college athletics as compared to poor states like Alabama and Mississippi.

how is maryland so low in total support? under armour must be really struggling.

Like I said in other threads there is a large % of the fanbase that want us to just become an upper echelon in athletics by sheer force of will and brilliant coaching and development by our coaches and staff...

Too many complaints about no center, no skill players, no this, no that and a lot of blame game on the coaches WHO CERTAINLY deserve some criticisms

At the end of the day this is EXTREMELEY eye opening for how far behind we are in this NIL game and that everyones expectations for what is reasonable to expect from our $$$ programs needs to be tempered

Based on this we should continue to expect annual debates about the Guaranteed Rate Bowl vs. Dukes Mayo Bowl and wondering if were going to be playing in Dayton or hosting an NIT game

People always find other excuses when the biggest issue is staring them in the face.

I have no interest in paying players. Never will. College sports is meaningless in essence.

Too many folks in NJ see Rutgers as beneath them, especially those with means. Their support always seem to go to the Ivy's and exclusive private schools (e.g., Duke, northeastern liberal colleges) followed by "exotic" out of state schools (e.g., Michigan, Illinois, Penn St)

I just registered with Pikell’s Speed limit Club 2024-25. Contributions help raise NIL $ via Knights of the Raritan. Put your $ where your typing finger(s) are by joining me in supporting RUMBB.

If this is for all sports I can tell you that Nebraska’s is not even close to that number. The Volleyball NIL fund has over $5mil in it. I think fb is around $14mil. Not sure on hoops.

Where would all the money that Dylan and Ace will get from Nike, Fanatics, Red Bull among others go in the spread sheet? It might be more important to get players that can link to companies that are trying to hit "home runs" with recruits and their future potential to help lead them. If somehow Dylan or Ace become superstars in the NBA, these companies will get back their investments 1000 times over.

Of course, it is easier said than done and this might be a one time thing for Rutgers.

Best of Luck,
Groz

Thanks for sharing. Why is your volleyball fund so big?!?!?

They came up with these estimates by finding a handful of data points out there on the size of various collectives and then creating a relationship between the size of those collectives and publicly available information on revenue for the athletic programs. So it’s a legit method for coming up with rough estimates, and it’s also going to be off sometimes.

Thinking about it, this also isn’t accounting for the deals the player’s agents come up with on their own. Ace and Dylan signed a huge NIL deal with Nike. That probably had nothing to do with the RU collective.

So all those years of hoping we get into the Big East and then hitting the jackpot with the B1G to get us on a more even playing field with the big boys…and along comes NIL and Rutgers is screwed once again. Bravo to the Blue Bloods for figuring out a way to keep themselves way above schools like us athletically, regardless of the conference we are in. I know people will say it’s up to the donors, but we don’t have them so the point is mute.

Remove the NIL column and we're not close to a more even playing field.
This doom and gloom over NIL is dumb.

Remove NIL and we're still tens of millions behind conference "peers" annually.
OSU got $100m MORE not including NIL.

NIL isn't causing an uneven playing field. The rest of that table is.

It would take Rutgers 5 years to get the support that OSU got in 1 year According to the chart.

The volleyball program at NU is a big deal. It operates in the black and is self sufficient. Last year it had a $1mil profit. This year will be very similar. They get 9000 fans at every game in a 9000 seat arena that is theirs. I think the 2 highest paid athletes at NU are volleyball players.
A couple years ago they were gifted a $5mil NIL from a single donor and that spurred a lot of donations to the programs. They don’t hurt for money.
There is an 11,000 person waiting list for season tickets. Every year they open it up for current ticket holders to “improve” their seats. Last year there were 4 tickets out of the 9000 that somebody gave up. A couple years ago a friend offered $100k donation if he could be guaranteed 2 tickets. NU replied that that level of a gift wouldn’t put them in the top 100 of offered gifts for tickets. It its own animal at NU. Haha

That's impressive! I guess it helps that there's not much else going on in Lincoln? Sorry, couldn't resist. Just jealous.

Lest we forget Geo Baker was one of the athletes who spearheaded NIL collective

This chart is just a demonstration of the New York Metro fan base similar to the LA fan base have high expectations and short attention spans and patience levels with a million other things drawing people’s attention and interest in these areas. It’s discussed in every sport professional and college that these fan bases are fair weather yet have the loudest voice of dissatisfaction but with a million other things to do other than support your program or professional team people just find something better to do until they magically become relevant again

The only solution to this to stay competitive is to either pony up more money which the old heads don’t want to do because it’s ruining college sports …. Or hope that our stabilizing figureheads in our $$$ sports can retain the guys we get out of hs through development and culture building

The first example that comes to mind when looking at this list is Purdue and Matt Painter. Not a huge collective but he doesn’t lose guys to the portal really and manages to field a top 15 team every year

That’s what we have to hope for unless things change financially

This is my point I just made. The collectives in these high metropolitan areas are lower than the college towns

The college is the entertainment in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, etc

I hate the reality of the situation.....

To succeed in NIL we will need a new wave of fans with a lot of wealth. 2 requirements are a successful team and an arena that caters to them.

I love my seat at the RAC, but we are packed in like sardines. I happily deal with it. I don't eat or drink at the RAC and when i need to use the bathroom I know when to go to not miss any game action and not wait in lines.

Some paying 500K might have issues with the above.

I don't want them to touch the RAC, but I realize it is now necessary just to retain potential new ultra wealthy fans

The RAC will not harbor growth in the new era of college sports … catch 22 we probably need MULTIPLE good runs to justify a new arena with our already stingy older fan base

Same issue with football we have a pop Warner field and pop Warner prices

I think they can accommodate much of that by building out the amenities in the concourse and building bump outs.

seats have to have way more room
bathrooms have to be separate from the rest of the fans

Believe me I wish it wasn't this way.

However it would be a waste to do this because renovating the RAC isn't what will attract new wealthy fans....winning will.

I would never take a client to a Rutgers game because all I want to do is watch the game and not worry about anything else.....if i wasn't like that I still couldn't/wouldn't take 90% of my clients to a game. You have people right on top of each other and you always have to worry about the person in front of you whacking your knees when they sit down. When client wants to go to the bathroom when a normal person goes they sit in a 10 minute line.

The RAC is famous for being a pure college BB experience. That's something to sell. And boosters are often fans, not just corporations wanting to entertain clients. You aren't wrong, but it's not the whole picture.

Thats okay we will phase ourselves out by choice by the end of the decade

I don’t want to phase out the educated loyal fans like yourself

I’m frustrated at the vocal bitter cynical crowd on here who don’t go to games, don’t contribute but seem to have the loudest voices

Idk how old you are or where you sit or anything about you but perhaps as a long time fan you can shed light as to WHY our older wealthier fanbase behaves differently in this NIL era than some of these other schools

It’s not like Rutgers doesn’t produce ultra wealthy fans of athletics

It's a good question. NJ/NY is known for being among the most cynical places. I like it that way. Could never handle living in "Minnesota nice" country. But there is a downside.

Also, I'd want to know how different our fans really are. Some are on board and some aren't. I assume that's true everywhere. Is the percentage split among Rutgers fans different than at other places? Or do those other places just have more core fans, so that same split still results in a larger NIL purse?

Hey there.

Can you give us some more info on what you told us the other day regarding the B1G bowl situation.

We’ve been tagging you in threads but I guess you hadn’t seen it.

It has nothing to do with "this NIL era".
Look at the rest of the columns.

We have always been significantly behind in alumni contributions and ticket sales compared to peers.
Without NIL we will still be significantly behind.

As someone said above, we have small arenas with cheap tickets (?? I'm just assuming. Have no idea how our prices compare to others).

I would imagine significantly raising ticket prices/mandatory donations, under the guise of "we need more money to compete", would be very negatively received.
