Quotables:

Kirk Angel, James Beatty's high school coach at New Hanover in North Carolina, on Beatty:

“I’ve got a point guard right now that wears No. 10, he’s committed to [UNC-Wilmington]. When he graduates at the end of the year I’m actually not going to let anybody wear No. 10 for a while because JB was the last one to wear it. So I’m putting it away for a while."

Mount Vernon head coach Bob Cimmino on his former player Jonathan Mitchell:

“With Jon, we used to have a summer camp. And Jon would ride his bicycle up to camp and towards the end of the day after four or five grueling hours, the gym was about 100 degrees. When you said, ‘Time to go,’ you wanted everybody to leave. And this kid Jon just wouldn’t get out of the gym. So I thought he was a really annoying 15-year-old and I was mad at him. And then as soon as I found out he was only 11, I was a little more patient with him.”

Mike Coburn on the end of the season:

“I think about it almost every day. It’s almost over and the season’s really winding down. I can’t believe how fast it went. I feel like I just got here. It is what it is.”

Drew Harris Sr. on his son’s recruitment:

“Letters come in by the droves. We have two trash bags full of them and probably two bathtubs full of mail.”

Recruiting tidbits

Nick Golz (DePaul)

Golz has been hearing from Rutgers, UConn, BC and Buffalo. He says he has spoken to RU assistant coach Chris Hewitt.

"They (Rutgers) have interest in me and want to see me do work," Golz said. "I'm very aggressive and I play hard every play."

Golz added he is considering the Scarlet Knights.

Steve Longa (Saddle Brook)

The rugged Longa had been hearing from Rutgers, Monmouth and Buffalo and now has two more schools added to the mix.

"I received a letter from Boston College the other day, and Western Michigan also reached out to me," Longa said.

Keith Lumpkin (St. Peter’s Prep)

Rutgers signee Keith Lumpkin notched his 1,000th career point in a 59-39 loss to St. Anthony at the Dan Finn Classic in Jersey City on Monday night.

Talent to Rutgers

Plenty of talent will be on the RU campus this weekend with the Badger Sport 7-on-7 tournament beginning on Saturday inside the Rutgers Bubble. Here is a rundown of some of the top prospects who will be on campus.

Prospects with RU offers:

Wayne Morgan (Erasmus Hall, NY)

Morgan said this past week that RU is among his favorites and now holds eight offers. The talented defensive back has held a Rutgers offer for quite a while and was very impressive at last summer’s RU camp.

Brandon Napoleon
(St. Peter’s Prep)

Interest continues to mount as Napoleon holds two offers and will be playing quarterback for the NJ Flash along with other NJ standouts such as Leonte Carroo, Devin Fuller, Quanzell Lambert and Ruhann Peele.

Quanzell Lambert (Timber Creek)

Holding steady at thirteen offers, Lambert will be put to the test in coverage as he will be asked to guard some speedy receivers. However, one of the reasons Lambert has received so many early offers is due to his ability to cover ground quickly from sideline to sideline.

Devin Fuller (Old Tappan)

Fuller will play defensive back as part of a NJ Flash team that has to be considered the favorite to win the entire tournament, which includes teams from as far away as Michigan. Coincidentally, Fuller picked up his eleventh offer from Michigan a couple of days ago and added UConn and Indiana today.

Blake Rankin (Bloomsburg, PA)

Rutgers remains the only offer for the 6-foot-4 quarterback who will miss PA playmakers teammate Greg Garmon, who will not attend the event because of a track championship. Rankin’s main target will be Coatesville wide receiver Kyle Kerrick, who is a bit under the radar but likely to emerge as a solid recruit with a fair amount of offers.

Jazzmar Clax (Freehold Boro)

The hard-hitting linebacker won’t be able to use his physical play and will face some tough tests on the defensive side of the football for the NJ Flash. Clax still claims a lone offer from RU, but interest has been growing as of late.

Leonte Carroo (Don Bosco)

The super recruit should make things easier for NJ Flash quarterback Brandon Napoleon. Rutgers is a favorite of Carroo’s, but it looks like he will let his recruitment play out.

Cyrus Jones (Gilmore, MD)

The Baltimore athlete is closing in on 20 offers, the latest of which came from Miami and Notre Dame. Jones will participate as part of the Maryland Dream Team, one of the favorites to win the entire 7-on-7 tournament.

DJ Singleton (St. Peter’s Prep)

Singleton will line up with the NJ Flash as he will carry offers from RU, Miami and UNC to the tournament. Singleton is also primary candidate for an early commitment in the class of 2012.

Ronald Darby (Potomac, MD)

Part of the S.W.A.G. team, Darby may be the fastest player in the tournament. He already holds over 30 offers from the who’s who of college football and seems destined to be a rivals100 prospect.

Stefon Diggs (Good Counsel, MD)

Diggs’ list of around 20 offers already includes the top college programs in the country. He will lead his team, Maryland Speed, into the tournament and will be one of the top burners at the event.

Ian Thomas (Franklin, MD)

Thomas will team up with Diggs as the Maryland Speed will have two elite receivers. Thomas currently holds eight offers and will likely haul in a bunch more before all is said and done.

Deontay McManus
(Dunbar, MD)

McManus’ presence on the Maryland Dream Team only is another reason the stocked squad will be among the tops in the tournament. His offer list stands at 15 and he will be one of the more physical athletes in the tournament.

Ruhann Peele (Linden)

Peele remains a bit of an unknown commodity as RU is still his lone offer. An early commitment would help out the Scarlet Knights as it may be only a matter of time before other coaches hone in on the speedy receiver.

Prospects with RU interest:

Camren Williams (Catholic Memorial, MA) - seven offers for the athlete, who has been receiving increased interest from Rutgers

Armani Reeves (Trinity Catholic, MA) - Already holding eight offers, RU may be close to offering what could be New England’s top prospect

Kalief Joyner (Christ the King, NY) - Big, intriguing tight end who seems to be on the verge of his first offer

Da'Quan Davis (Calvert Hall, MD) - solid cover corner with an offer from West Virginia

Nate Smith (Archbishop Wood, PA) - one offer from South Carolina, picking up more interest as of late

Khalif Herbin (Montclair) - Size may be the only thing holding back the recruitment of this dynamic athlete

Sean Maguire (Seton Hall Prep) - quarterback did not get much of a chance to showcase his skills last season in a run-dominated offense

Eli Ankou (St. Peter, Ontario) - Canadian linebacker with a lot of potential

Donovan Riley (Baltimore Poly) - the safety picked up his first offer recently from Virginia Tech

Vin Ascolese (North Bergen) - claims to have clocked a 4.56 forty last week and that speed will be put to the test

Ian Fisher (Brunswick, MD) - big quarterback who is still very raw and may be recruited to play elsewhere in college

Casey Cochran (Masuk, CT) - solid Connecticut quarterback with Boston College offer and heavy RU interest

Marcus McGill (Gates Chili, NY) - climbing out from under the radar and picked up his first offer from Buffalo this week

Jared Crayton (St. Peter’s Prep) - Playing backup to Savon Huggins forced his recruitment to get off to a slow start
