Jeff Hafley on coaching at
Rutgers:

“I’m fortunate to work for a great university, a great head coach
in the greatest state in America.”

Mohamed Sanu on the benefits of
not being used in the Wild Knight:

“I took a pounding in the Wildcat and my body took a toll from it.
It’s definitely something that held me back from being a better
receiver than I intended to be.”

Brian Angelichio on the ability
of his Rutgers tight ends to impact the game like the ones he
had at Pitt:

“Well certainly that’s what we’re hoping and that’s the
expectations but the things that I’ve been encouraged with are
their work ethic, attention to detail and their willingness to
learn the system and buy into what we’re teaching.”

Logan Ryan on having a short
memory at cornerback:

“Coach says you have to flush plays. Anything good or bad, you
just have to flush it because you never know when the next the
ball is coming to you or when the next play is coming. You just
have to have that mentality where you’re so confident that nothing
phases you.”

David Rowe on possible starting
CB’s Brandon Jones and Logan Ryan:

“I’m proud of what I’ve seen out of them. I know they can play.”

Recruiting tidbits

Ryan Brodie (Long Branch)

Brodie picked up another offer last Thursday, courtesy of the
University of Miami. The Miami program has been embroiled in
controversy this week, thanks to the Nevin Shapiro scandal, but
Brodie said while he is monitoring the situation, the Canes remain
in contention for his services.

"It does matter but me and my dad talked about it," Brodie said.
'This is a whole new coaching staff they have there. That's also
what Coach Golden told me. I am kind of waiting to see how this
whole thing plays out."

Brodie added that he will most likely take his official visit to
Miami on Labor Day. The Hurricanes will travel to Maryland on
Labor Day for the ACC opener.

Ian Thomas (Franklin, MD)

Rutgers continues to recruit the talented Maryland wide receiver
and the interesst continues to be mutual.

“I am still considering [Rutgers], they are still on me heavily,”
said Thomas. “Nothing is new in my recruitment.”

The fact that RU already has three wide receiver commitments in
the class of 2012 hasn’t deterred Thomas.

“I'm a baller, I thrive off competition,” said Thomas.

Wayne Morgan (Erasmus Hall, NY)

According to a member of the Erasmus Hall coaching staff, Morgan
recently picked up offers from South Carolina and Boise State.
South Carolina has moved up on his list and is ‘probably No. 1’ at
this point. The fact that South Carolina has no defensive back
commits also had an impact on Morgan. Also working in the
Gamecocks’ favor is the fact that Morgan’s close friend Elijah
Shumate of Don Bosco is big on South Carolina. If Boise State
shows more interest, the Broncs could also climb on Morgan’s list
as he has a high interest level in them as well.

Yuri Wright (Don Bosco)

The Hafley factor could come into play for Rutgers when it comes
to Wright’s recruitment as he has already made an influence on rivals.com[/URL]’s 41st
ranked prospect in the nation.

“Coach Hafley, he’s the best man,” said Wright. “He’s there for me
to talk to whenever I need someone to talk to. He’s a great
recruiter and a heck of a coach and one day I hope I can
eventually play for him.”

Marcell Lazard (Bloomfield) 2013

Hafrley is also making his presence felt with members of the class
of 2013. Offensive tackle Marcell Lazard recently picked up a
Maryland offer but has also been in close contact with Hafley.

“He is a very convincing man,” said Lazard. “He speaks very highly
of Rutgers and really makes me feel at home.”

Lazard has visited RU on multiple occasions and is hopeful an
offer will arrive in the near future.

“One of the best college facilities I've seen so far,” Lazard said
of Rutgers.

Shakim Phillips

As many fans know, former NJ 4-star receiver Shakim Phillips of
Depaul, left Boston College. Fans wondered if Rutgers would
express interest in landing Phillips as a transfer, but with few
scholarships to give this year, the Scarlet Knights declined. It
does look like Phillips will be headed to the Big East, though. In
fact, he could solidify it as early as today. Out of respect to
the player, we will let him announce it on his own terms. However,
one thing is for certain, it won't be Rutgers.

From Bosco to Bergen

In other North Jersey parochial news, there has been yet another
Don Bosco defection to Bergen Catholic. Secondary coach Bill
Tierney will be joining good friend Nunzio Campanile at Bergen.
Tierney was widely considered one of the top 2 assistants on the
Bosco staff, and he was also the go-to guy for recruiting. He
joins a Bergen Catholic staff that also features New Jersey
coaching legend Ed Stinson, who won 14 league titles and 6 state
titles while serving as the head coach of Hoboken.

Freshman Focus

True freshman defensive end Max Issaka has not yet been able to
make a push at the two-deep although he has put on some size since
his commitment.

“I’ve put on about 30, 35 pounds,” said Issaka. “It took time at
first. At first, I put on like 40 pounds and really couldn’t
maintain anything with my speed, so I had to gradually lose it.
When I lifted the right way with Coach JB (Jay Butler) it only
helped me to realize that I can still be heavier and still move
the same way.”

Although still in the midst of his first training camp, Isakka
offered up some praise to Butler.

“He brings a lot to the table. Knowing that what he does is the
right way of lifting, the right way of eating, nutrition and
everything, it just puts into perspective that I can do something
right and know what I’m doing with my body.”
Strategic Billboard Placement?

Rutgers has billboards currently in place, as well as in the
works, all across the state. However, the placement of one
billboard, as well as the rumored plan for another, has fans
wondering. The current billboard is located in Paramus, just north
of where Route 17 meets the Parkway. It is on the southbound side,
but facing towards northbound traffic. The one rumored to be going
up in mid September will also be along Route 17, but several miles
north. What is the common factor in their placement? Don Bosco
Prep.

As you can see below, the billboards are potentially on the
commuting trail of at least three Rutgers targets: Darius Hamilton
(West Paterson), Elijah Shumate (East Orange) and Yuri Wright
(Spring Valley). The stretch of road in Paramus is one of the most
trafficked in North Jersey, and any person visiting one of
Paramus' famous malls is likely to pass it. From a strictly
marketing perspective, the placement is excellent. From a
recruiting perspective, it might be ingenious.
