Flood fired by phone, was on a recruiting trip, per Sargeant.

Wow , I am surprised he wasn't allowed to meet with the team one final time. He coached and recruited these kids . He should have been given the opportunity to say goodbye.

Article explained, better he hear on phone vs in person a day later and not have the decency to be the first to know

I wonder if he went on that trip and took the chopper just to be a touch difficult with barchi whom I am sure he despises.

I found it hard to believe that flood deep down didn't know he was likely getting canned today despite what he says to the media.

Also in the real world must fired employees are exited from the building. And not allowed back to their desks so don't think flood should have been allowed to see team.

Was Laviano with him?

I just have to ask what he was doing on a recruiting trip on the day he would presumably be fired, taking a copter to Long Island (I don't blame his for taking the copter, since he might be still on the LIE or the Belt Parkway as I write this if he drove). I just hope it was for someone who is a really good get and would come to us no matter who is the coach. He probably should've stayed home so he could get the news in person and get in a farewell to the team. His last act as HC seems representative in a number of ways as to who he is and how he ran the program.

This had crossed my mind as well, especially if you assume the Barchi's statement about having him scheduled to meet f2f is true. If that is the case, it's either just another example of the coordination and communication at RU being broken (which I would not discount!) or Flood was trying to be as far away from campus as possible (but working) the day after.

Pretty poor taste by Barchi..he should have known Floods intinery which he easily could have found out and summoned him during the morning

He did mention in his presser that it was business as usual for him, and that he was going out to L I to recruit today. IMHO he had to know the writing was on the wall. I think he was using the 'Go ahead, make my day' gambit to see if Barchi would blink at the thought of litigation, etc. To his credit, Barchi did not blink, and did the right thing.

The head coach checks in with the President before taking a recruiting visit?

Reading Barchi's comments it looks like he asked Kyle to come to his house...Kyle went for a helo ride instead

Nice touch. Did you expect RU to act with any class? No different than the fan base. Jersey Strong.

If Barchi had watched Flood's presser yesterday, he would have known that he would be on the road recruiting today.

I'm a little surprised/disappointed that Flood didn't get a last chance to address the team; I'm sure that he would have kept it classy.

Kinda like when George Constanza went out of this way not to meet with his GF so she couldn't dump him?

Also, he was delusional thinking his job was safe.

Boo hoo. Dipshit flood should have known he was probably going to be canned; he is oblivious as ever. I swear the guy is in denial of everything that was going on around him.

Kinda feel bad for him

He made millions these past few years, right? He'll survive.

You work until you are told not to. I respect him still hustling.

Yeah I've seen one or two guys have to take the perp walk with a box of their stuff, escorted out by security.

Oh get over it. There's no "kind" way to fire someone. If you look at how most coaches are terminated, Barchi's actions were no worse than anyone else's. Ask Lane Kiffin.

I'm sure there are a number of ways a head coach can work on a Sunday after the season is over that don't require leaving the office or boarding a copter. If he had to recruit. why waste copter fuel, copter time, pilot hours? He should've drove to somewhere closer, like the great recruiting hotbed of NJ (and have a GA drive him around).

Again, this last act speaks a lot about him. He certainly worked harder, but not smarter, and he is one for ignoring the the proverbial writing on the wall. All of which lead to the demise of his stint as HC.

I agree he had to know. Even if he was not sure he must have understood that staying close to home today would have been a smart move. Then again it's Flood so maybe he really believed he was safe.

I don't think you go recruit closer just in the even that you might get a call so you can get back to the Hale Center. You go about your business.

There are a lot of reasons to question Flood. This is a stupid one.

While the comments from Barchi were framed in a very professional way - gotta hunch that Barchi was a tad bit pissed that Flood was not where the schedule indicated that he had been scheduled to be. I don't know -but sounds slightly like, just maybe, Flood was making himself just a bit difficult to reach.... and as long as he had that chopper at his disposal - he was going to use it.

Possibly if Flood was already on campus he could have said a farewell - but since Barchi wanted to promptly break the news to the team - and Flood was out on Long Island ... so by the time Flood got back it was a lot later & the window of opportunity had closed - they probably were not going to try to call the team back together at that point

Don't know how many years ago I met GS in the summer at a Dunkin Donuts in Somerset. He was bringing his son to a baseball game. He was driving a scarlet Escalade like Flood's. Wonder if a new coach gets a new scarlet Escalade?
