Google up "a deep dive into the granny shot " by Max Rappaport. Establishes pretty conclusively that the underhanded technique improves %. In '63 Frank McGuire convinced Wilt to use it. His % went from 51% to 61%, highest in his career. He discontinued it after that. Article points to a study of HS boys who had never shot FT' & reports that those using the underhanded shot had better success than those using the current prevailing technique & that their advantage grew as both groups continued to practice.
