“Rutgers gets a lot of numbers behind the ball and they’re a pretty physical team,” said head coach Steve Swanson. “We knew this would be the kind of game that transpired today. We didn’t move the ball as well as we should have or as quickly as we needed to change the point. Credit Rutgers for that because they didn’t give us a lot of good looks and got it into a penalty kick situation where anything can happen, and it did. They played hard to come in to our place and play they way the did defensively, you have to give them credit.

“Rutgers has been a difficult team to break down all year. You can’t look at it as the penalty kick contest was the reason we lost. We had 110 minutes to break them down and we didn’t do that. They’ve been difficult to break down all year and you have to give them their due. They were organized and limited our chances.”

Looks like we really have a great team on our hands. [banana]:cool2:[cheers]

That's awesome. Thanks for posting here.

Once again, as we all know, Jersey has the athletes in ALL sports. The day the best stay home to REPRESENT is a day we have all been been waiting, and hoping for. WHEN it happens, we will see teams compete on a national level. Go RU!!!

They had a great game plan today. From what I saw, it looked like we wanted to prevent UVA from speeding the game up and take our chances by either getting a counter attack goal or PK's. It worked

And the Rutgers budget is a rounding error for the state of New Jersey.

And their entire budget is a rounding error compared to the FB budget.

Soccer is inexpensive, that is why it is played all over the world, and is hugely popular in 3rd world countries. It will never require FB/BB/Baseball/Softball like money to succeed.

It isn't really that inexpensive in comparison to other Olympic sports. All have relatively the same amount of allotted scholarships allowable by the NCAA, which is the biggest cost. Throw in travel, which all teams have roughly the same amount of to one degree or another. Based on Title 9, I am guessing the women's soccer team is funded much better that some other men's sports.

Posted this in the Soccer, Wrestling, etc. board.

Was a great game! So glad I got to see in person and cheer the team on to victory! Random thoughts:

- UVA dominated second half but ladies held tight.
- UVA outshot during regulation but didn't really have that many quality shots... think Murph had to make only one really good save where she jumped high to punch one over the net.
- RU controlled both OTs. They pressed the action and had some good opportunities.
- UVA goalie was behind the line and moved forward before our first PK and made the save. Prior to our second PK the linesman was talking to the UVA goalie pretty matter of factly. I'm fairly confident he was telling her she needed to be on the line, not behind the goal line. My thought at that time was "hell, why didn't you make the damn call on the first PK?!"
- Freakin awesome that Murph kicked our crucial 3rd PK and nailed it!
- Big break when UVA player hit cross bar on potential game winning PK.
- I knew as long as we kept putting them in the net that Murph was bound to make a big save - and that she did!

How many seniors do we have on the team?

Great job ladies.

For the this is a football board people, Rutgers admission into the Big Ten was not a football only thing. The significance of successes in other sports is important as it begins to build the notion that Rutgers can win at something and isn't absolute disaster of an Athletic Dept. Perceptions take time.

Defense wins championships.

I don't want to take anything away from RU's victory. But defense in general do not win soccer championships. (maybe in nfl or nba)

In soccer, in general, 90+% of the time the team with the best offense wins. Are there exceptions, of course. Sometimes, the offensive team passing is not crisp or shooting is just slightly off, etc and the opponent team has a good defense, and an upset occurs. But in general I'd rather have the best offensive team 100% of the time.
