GAME 12 Wisconsin: Truth is Rutgers is not a good team

FWIW, the +/-

Wisconsin(-6)
Myles Johnson 25:20 -4
Geo Baker 29:51 -2
Montez Mathis 17:44 -15
Ron Harper 31:49 -5
Jacob Young 32:31_-5
Paul Mulcahy 26:53 +5
Cliff Omoruyi 14:40 -2
Caleb McConnell 21:20 -2

In this 1-5 stretch,
1st OSU(-12)- Mathis -26/32 min, Douc -20/21 min, Myles +16(15), Young +7(29)
Purdue(+5)- Young -3/35 min, 2(PM,MM) at -1, Reiber +14(16), Geo +4(37)
Iowa(-2)- McConnell -9/11 min, Mathis -4/30 min, Geo +5(32), RHJ +2(33)
MSU(-23)- Young -28/25 min, Mathis -23/24 min, Geo -10(24), Paul -12(28)
2nd OSU(-11)- Mathis -23/24 min, Geo -17/29 min, Myles+6(25), Caleb +5(23)

Seems like a combo of Geo(36.2%FG, 13% 3pt) and Ron Harper(30%FG, 20%3pt) poor shooting since OSU meltdown, leading 48-32 outscored 20-48. They need to cut down on the shots a little. Altering Mathis's role to a 3pt specialist and defender, he has shot 19-46 41.3%, *10-16, 62.5% from 3*, and *9 of 30, 30% from 2*. Let him focus on his strengths. Time to get them back to the roles that were working in the first 6 games, minus the Mathis role change. Too many players are doing too much out of their wheelhouse leading to this bad play and shooting, continue Rebounding and D from last night.

Even Eddie Jordan didn’t lose to Wisconsin at the RAC. And not a Wisconsin team that scored 60 points and coming off a 40-point second half blowout. Terrible
Lets not forget -- Frank Kaminsky did not play in that Eddie Jordan
game because of injury. Total fluke

We were not as good as we appeared to be in the beginning of the season and not as bad as we appear to be now. If you remember, at the beginning of last year, the fan base was bemoaning how poorly we were playing. Don't remember, reread the comments after St. Bonaventure. I have faith that Pikiell will make the adjustments that are necessary. He has shown for the past three plus years that he is more than capable of doing so.

The team will need to prove it to me. Simple as that. They lost their goodwill. The offensive performance was horrific. Do you want me to go into end game where Young misses one and one and your experienced center fouls with no time on the shot clock. These mistakes are constant in every game. Do you want me to really go through all of them in the last 6 games I will

Sorry playing better on defense is fine but im not declaring a moral victory over it. Wisconsin played as bad as they did vs Michigan

Respectfully....yes it does need to be written.

Not at this point. But down the line, you want to “be a columnist ...” that people regularly follow ...and if you want to be fed up ...you got to bring the facts and evidence. Make a statement it is coaching or the players ...or both and why!

If you recall...for a long time I used to write something similar on the football board...”comments and observations”
Every Sunday morning after a football game.

The main reason I stopped ?

I wrote a lot of things that were objective on what I saw ...and when they got criticism and why on the coaching staff (Flood) was off base On game situations, I got flooded with a lot of people saying I had an agenda (which I never had )...anyone who knows me knows I don’t have an agenda other than rooting for the name on the front of the jersey to win and being objective on why that is or isn’t happening

As soon as I got called out by a lot of people ...my writing days were over

Point it...when you starts to be followed like your are (and it’s a compliment that you are )...you need to be extra careful to be really objective and not let emotion overtake what is written ...because many other read and respect what you write

Saying that we lost the good will is fair. Time will tell if we re-earn that

Just support it the real evidence and not over ridden with emotion. If you want to write it (and Remember , I know what it takes to do What you are doing as a labor of love for free...I did it for a while too) ...stick with it the same, win or lose

Montez’ plus minus is horrific in many of the games. Thanks for the stats.

Bac - I think after every post you do summarizing the game you need to insert a song. “ The Morning After” from Ohio State game 2 was a classic. Based on your title thread of this game (Wisconsin), “Bad” by U2 would have been suffice. Hoping after Penn State, we get “I’m Winning” by Santana - signifying a must needed win.

How many games has he won us. How many games has he kept us in and been the only one scoring early. How has his defense been since he is gotten here. Plus minus is a stupid stat. Some team hits 4 threes and none of them on Montez ‘s man he is guarding and he is a -12. When teams go on runs it s a plus and when the other team goes on a run it s a minus. Doesn’t reflect the individual effort.

I would argue one of the reasons we lost Wisconsin was Pike going with Mulcahy over Tez and kept him on the bench for a great deal of the second half even when we couldn’t score. He is one of your 3 top scorers.

I am a Montez fan but my perception with Montez is that you either get the good Montez or the bad Montez. He’s very streaky and inconsistent from game to game. In the Wisconsin game, he only played 17 minutes because he was not in sync and the plus / minus stat of -15 reflected it with no RU player close to that figure. He shot 1 for 6. Furthermore in the last 3 games, he has only scored 12 points total shooting less than 30% with many ill advised shots. I understand your point on plus / minus but when there is a consistent trend as of late, it’s not an aberration. Hopefully we get the good Montez vs Penn State because we need him.

What we saw and what we did not see and wondering where it went. That obviously was a game Wisconsin felt extremely lucky to leave the RAC with a win. Rutgers outplayed them defensively, on the glass, offensive and defensively , points in the paint , and most people looking at that would say Rutgers won easily . But then the shooting numbers are revealed and neither team’s shooting was good , but Rutgers was horrendous. Literally 1 more made three from the 2 of 19 and Jacob’s 2 missed front ends of one on ones that were missed were the difference between a win and a loss .2 players played well, Jacob and Myles and most everyone else played like crap in the following order , Ron, Paul, Geo . I do not think Caleb or Tez played terribly , especially Tez because he didn’t play enough. Hated Pike’s rotations tonight . Paul played too much as he had one of his worst games with 4 terrible inopportune turnovers and missed open shots . Tez should not have been on the bench for most of that second half. Ron should have sat down as well . His forced shots and his laziness hanging out on the perimeter should have earned him a seat next to Pike. Geo has disappeared literally. Ball movement has disappeared and do not call the weave exchanging the ball between 3 players ball movement. The only thing that was tried that worked was ball screens with Jacob for layups because Wisconsin could not handle him as Gard admitted in the post game presser . The thing that was not tried was to highlight Myles and give him the damn ball. Yes had a superb first half and that flush early I thought was a sign he was going to have a monster night. But as I have been lamenting , our guards suck at feeding the post and Pike has to stop bringing Myles up on every ball screen and instead yell at his damn guards to feed Myles on the block. We didn’t play inside out , which in my opinion is the way we should play , and a way to get out of this shooting slump. Myles cannot take only 5 shots a night but especially tonight where he could have brought us a victory with more touches. Myles is also one of our better passers , so if the guys are cutting and squaring up ready to shoot as soon as the pass comes , our shooting % will improve.

Defense and rebounding was fixed tonite , something lacking since Cliff first got hurt . The offense has to change to playing inside out through Myles or Cliff, mixing in some ball screens for Jacob ( and Geo if he chooses to use them) . Not playing Tez and playing Paul too much is a huge mistake. Finally the Ron turn from All American level to just forcing things and being lazy on the perimeter and Geo ‘s disappearing act is the elephant in the room. Maybe letting Jacob start and run the offense and bringing Geo in and letting him run the offense gets him going again because we need him even more than we need Ron right now. Last night Geo and Ron combined for 12 points on 6 of 25 shooting and even more glaring was they attempted 0 foul shots tell you everything that is wrong with their game right now. Should be impossible that either one doesn’t attempt a foul shot. That has to end immediately by putting Ron on the block and Geo in ball screens . Despite the really disappointing loss in a very winnable game , we fixed the defense and rebounding , now fix the offense.
I
I agree that he played Paul way too much especially down the stretch but if we sit RHJ than we are playing 4 guard’s which is tough
