Now that is Rutgers basketball! That was my first post in the game thread after the first timeout. Rutgers from the get go were showing that they were going to cut the mustard today. The whole place could feel it. The RAC had the tension of a NCAA tourney game in that first half where both teams seemed locked in and laying blows on both offense and defense. Both teams never had anything more than 4 or 5 point leads and the lead must have changed a hundred times before halftime. You could tell that Illinois brought its toughness and A game in the first half as well. Obviously without Dosunmou. it was going to be tough for them but they came out fearless and went right after the paint trying to get Cockburn and Georgi going. Cockburn was particularly effective in the getting position and Illinois was doing a good job on the offensive boards...10-4 in the first half as Cockburn scored 8 and Georgi added 6. But note those numbers. Cockburn was held to just 2 points and Georgi held scoreless as an oppressive Rutgers defensive held Illinois to just 5 made fg until two garbage buckets in the last minute. For a key 7 minute stretch, RU held Illinois without a point where extending a 1 point lead to 12 which effectively was all she wrote.

That 7 minute stretch is what some may refer to as VINTAGE Rutgers basketball. It encompassed all the things that we know and love about our Scarlet Knights. Myles Johnson blocks, hustling for rebound, outlet passes to find the open man, Harper for 3, hands poking the ball away, turnovers generating points, finding the right man set up under the hop, finishing the layups and a raging building known as the RAC. Illinois was abused and oppressed during that stretch and RU all but broke the Illini's spirit. They would get a run of 5 points before RU came in with another wave of defense that took the lead to 14 and another corner 3 by Yeboah who layed the final dagger to make it 61-49 and from their was a rout the rest of the way. Illinois could do no right, crumbling under the deafening noise from the RAC which was building in its crescendo all through the 2nd half. The RAC and the players fed off of each other, a beautiful give and take of harmony, symphony and cacophony. The admiration was mutual they agreed.

This was easily RU's best complete game since the win over Penn State. There was not one point where you can even say RU was struggling or did not put forth the effort. After the last game, I asked when will this team learn its lesson? Well the verdict is out on the road. But this game..this was vintage Rutgers mustard...the kind we all fell in love with since the Seton Hall game. This was full of 40 minutes pounding nails imposing their physical will on their opponent until the Illini begging for mercy and sent to the torture chamber in the bowels of the RAC. Many even the biggest of fans on the board were sort of questioning whether this team had hit a wall or maybe had peaked or maybe just were not ready for the spotlight. BOLLOCKS! Today's performance should go a long way to dissipating all the worrying, the handwringing, negative nancys and ned. In a game where we had some fans worried RU would cut the cheese, RU cut the mustard. Today was a reaffirmation of the 2019-2020 season success. It was a reaffirmation of Coach Pikiell and his gameplan. It was a reaffirmation of Ron Harper Jr whose shot was left out in cornfield somewhere in Iowa. It was a reaffirmation of the RAC and the fans undying passion as we can taste what is about to come.

Individually...well again this was such a team effort especially on defense, however the superlative performance by Ron Harper Jr was one for the RAC annals. Ron hit on all 5 of his 3 point attempts, was 11-14 for the game for a 27 point performance, 6 boards and two steals. This was vintage Ron Harper tonight. Major kudos to him for sticking with it even as his confidence waned in the past few games. His spots he got around the basket for layups were works of art. Geo Baker back in the starting lineup where needed to be. Geo 7 assists...bravo. Geo had his moments but this wasnt going to be a game where we needed his miracles. He played within himself distributing the ball like a pro while limiting major mistakes. A confident Geo out there at home and well rested despite playing 32 minutes, when we needed him in the later stages. Paul Mulcahy 8 points, 3 assists in 27 minutes, the freshmen wunderkind, wise beyond his years, possibly his most comfortable game yet all around especially in shooting the ball. Myles Johnson, boy his defense tonight, 11 boards, 6 points, it says only 2 blocks but I thought more. Loved him coming off the bench tonight, loved him playing such tough D without fouling. He and Yeboah shut the paint down and it made Illinois take an ungodly 28 threes which simply is not their game. Shaq Carter valuable minutes with the start and throughout and hit his free throws. Yeboah, boy just came up big on both sides. It seems like you can always count on him to hit a big 3 at the RAC. 12 points, 6 rebounds, 2 blocks. Admittedly, Caleb, Montez, and Jacob struggled to find their groove today. All limited in minutes and just 2-15 shooting yet even with that, they still played decent defense when they were in. Even on off nights, they did not kill RU and did not force their game when it was not happening. So some credit there and credit to Pike for riding the right lineups. I think he is becoming a bit more flexible and its paying off. The coaching staff did a superlative job tonight in game prep and managing the game. Second half, Pike had them ready to come out guns blazing and really did a better job in the 2nd half of denying Cockburn any looks really and forcing Illinois to shoot rushed jumpers or 3s and the latter is not their game at all. Pike dared them to beat RU with someone besides Cockburn and Illinois guards just did not have it.

So savor this mustard tonight because every night in the Big 10 is a one game season. You are only as good as your last win. Michigan is an important rematch and a key needed win for the resume as we move toward March. I must say some of the bracketologists who are starting to become snarky about RU and drop their seeds can shove it. This team passes all eye tests. Rutgers sits in 4th place in the most competitive conference in the country. They can take their biases and shove it as schools like Louisville, WVU, LSU and Butler continue to lose games in bunches but yet never seem to take a hit in seeding. If any of them bothered to watch this game today, they would realize that Rutgers is sitting on the biggest and unlikeliest story in tourney history.

Great game and solid performance. We desperately need a road win. Only having 1 road win can give the selection committee the excuse not to include RU or screw us with a low seed.

Bac- great summary as always.

Looks like Mulcahy has won Pike’s confidence in crunch time over Jacob,Caleb and Montez.

Kudos to Pike for making the necessary adjustments by starting Geo and Shaq. Helps Myles stay out of foul trouble.

Harper was awesome as were Geo,Kwasi and Myles.

Great win in a must win game!

One of my favorite moments of the game was when Harper poked the ball from Cockburn, drives the ball down the court , clears out space by putting the Illinois defender on his butt and then dishes to McConnell for the easy layup.

it was a key basket that stretched the lead to 50-42 after the two timeouts where the RAC started to wild.

Great post. I especially loved the last paragraph, and I completely agree. Rutgers more than passes the eye test and to continue to drop this team into the 8th or 9th slot when all of the teams you mentioned lost, is insulting. On TV one of the commentators mentioned, "yes, Rutgers' away record is bad, but compared to every team in the B1G they have never been blown out." And that's so true. We have played everybody tough on the road in conference. Everybody.

As for today's game, this IMO was the best they played all year. Yes, I realize that Ayo didn't play today, but even if he did and was at full strength I still don't believe Illinois would have beaten us. And instead of winning by 15 maybe we win by 10. The whole team had it going today. And even though Caleb continues to struggle and Jacob and Tez were off today, they still played smothering defense. And I loved how in the second half we not only fronted Kofi but double and sometimes even tripled teamed him, daring their guards to hit their threes which they didn't. In fact they went 8-28 in their threes. When you're shooting that many threes, it means the high and low posts are being clogged and you're not going to win. Great game plan by Pike and staff and well executed by the team. One last shout out to Paul. He had an all around great game today. I think it was his best for the season.

Even if this wonderful team does not make the NCAAs this year, it still has given us the best basketball seen around here in many years. They are the toughest team with the highest basketball IQ of any Rutgers team since the 1980s. Whatever the final outcome will be, this coach and team have transformed the program in ways never thought possible. And they have brought fun back to the RAC that has not seen such excitement since the Roy Hinson days.
Unlike previous years, we now know that Rutgers has a good chance to beat any opponent we play. That makes every game very entertaining.

Thank you, Coach Pikiell.

Good recap. I thought Pike did a nice job on substitutions today, especially with Geo and Harper midway through the 2nd half. You could sense Illinois had hit a wall, nothing was falling and they seemed gassed. Pike putting Geo and Harper back in after a long rest with fresh legs was the final dagger as they pushed the lead from 7 to 20.

Best game we played since PSU, and best overall game since the SHU game. Our offense was clicking -- finally -- and the defensive intensity was there from the beginning. A few game notes.

1. Harper was simply UNCONSCIOUS. My son mentioned earlier that somebody hit 8 threes in an earlier B1G game today, and I said "We don't have anybody that can hit 6 or 8 threes in a single game. Well, Ron almost proved me wrong. When I saw during warmups that Ron went back to the 'fro, I said to my kids that he's going to break out today. And break out he did, going 11-14 overall and 5-5 from three. Wow.

2. Baker played a GREAT floor game, with 12 points, 7 assists, 4 rebounds, and just smart play with the ball (unlike Young, who was trying to do too much and, as a result, played out of control).

3. Unsung hero? Yeboah. He always seems to hit TIMELY threes, and he gave us another deep option other than Ron. 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 blocks in 23 very productive minutes.

4. Pike made a BRILLIANT move starting Carter over Myles. I feel like, in recent games, Myles had been playing extremely tentative in the early going because he's so aware that he can't get in foul trouble. And it brought his "game" down a couple of notches. So Pike starts Shaq today, and although Cockburn was killing us on the boards, the "help" defense was good enough that he wasn't going crazy scoring points. So Myles comes in at the 15 minute mark, gets a quick foul, but it was only his first foul. He ended up playing 23 minutes -- which I think is his average -- and was very active, getting a few nice buckets and grabbing 11 rebounds and blocking 2 shots. That up and under move was a thing of beauty.

5. And how about Paul getting 27 minutes of playing time, including in crunch time over McConnell, Mathis, and Young (the latter two of whom just had poor games). Paul is a steadying influence on offense, makes good decisions, and is starting to become a credible threat to score (8 points and 3 assists). He's also doing a decent job on defense.

6. We were 7 for 15 from three-point range today, and that was after hitting 9 for 23 (I think) against OSU. Oh, and 11-12 on FTs.

7. You can tell how well coached this team is. Illinois goes to a 1-3-1 zone midway through the first half, with Georgi at the top. We get nothing on the first possession or two, but then the next three times down the floor we move the ball crisply and get three layup opportunities. Myles missed his dunk, but we get two EASY layups with the others. Underwood calls it off after that. Just a great job recognizing the defense and adjusting on the fly, without having to call a timeout.

8. The RAC was looooooooouuuuuuuuddddd again today. Hey Illinois - you got RACKED!

9. Man, do I want this team to beat Michigan and get off that schneid.

10. I just rewatched a lot of the game, and additional kudos go to Yeboah for the defense he played on Andres Feliz. I would not have thought of putting Yeboah on Feliz - who usually KILLS us - but I think Yeboah’s length bothered him, and Feliz had a pretty pedestrian game.

I really was hoping this was the outcome of the game. All signs were pointing towards it but you never know. Flight to my vacation took off at 4:15. Brutal timing. Nervous the whole time. Knew I could rely on bac for the recap. Can't wait to watch this gem.

Welcome back Ron

And those away games have been to the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 5th, 8th, and 13th teams in the B1G. With 2nd, 5th and 9th coming up. Out of the bottom 5 teams, as of now, we'll have played at one of them (and the UM game at MSG, so that was a break).

Another great piece bac!

Yes! And not only have we been very competitive on the B1G road, but we lost by 3 at Illinois WITHOUT OUR BEST PLAYER. The narrative of the bracketologists should be that Rutgers is a difficult team to play ANYWHERE. And a road B1G win would make it more obvious for some of these simpletons.

“They can take their biases and shove it as schools like Louisville, WVU, LSU and Butler continue to lose games in bunches but yet never seem to take a hit in seeding.”

Nailed it, BAC. 18-8 (9-6) in the B1G is a tournament team bar none. While the blue bloods who aren’t as good pound for pound get the benefit of the doubt from all the sheep in the media. They’re supposed to be “experts” and be better than that, but instead they create and perpetuate the problem itself.

I really was hoping this was the outcome of the game. All signs were pointing towards it but you never know. Flight to my vacation took off at 4:15. Brutal timing. Nervous the whole time. Knew I could rely on bac for the recap. Can't wait to watch this gem.

Welcome back Ron

I was a little concerned that we were only up 2 at the half since I thought we played a good first half. Second half wound up being better than the first half. Particularly on the defensive end. Had to be a confidence builder for the team. They looked like they were engaged but just playing ball in the second half. I thought RH was still a little tentative early on but once he started shooting it was a thing of beauty. Lots of key contributions and PM's minutes stood out. I like when he runs the team and allows others like Geo to play off the ball.

Obviously Young struggled as did Caleb although I thought he got a little better as the game went on. I did not see Montez struggle to the same extent yet this was the second straight game where is minutes were reduced significantly. I thought he was playing pretty good defense which is his calling card. This is admittedly a nitpick since PM earned what he got yesterday and those needed to come from someone. Just not sure it should have been #23.

So we get a much needed victory. The conference continues to be very tight and still wide open for final standings. Every day half the teams playing take another loss regardless of how good they are. Don't worry about the standings or national rankings, just beat Michigan on Wednesday.

Bac, IMO, you are the best, most accurate bk-analysis poster on BOTH bk boards.

(Everyone doesn't get that as much over on the WBB board. But I do.)

Side note at the end of the game, Pike went with the 1-4 Geo Offensive set to his patent step back J, Illinois sent a 2nd player at Geo each time after he hit one. It will be interesting how they counter that opponent's wrinkle.

That’s when Geo has to be on the lookout for the open man.

Geo is good with that, because he can split the double-team and get to the rim or find an open man.

Geo recognized the double team coming both times, and he immediately went around one of the guys and drove to the side.

Teams will do that at their peril, as Geo is quick enough to get around the double team, and there will be somebody wide open.

Mulcahy had a steal on a sloppy transition by Illinois (following a sloppy transition break by RU) that was a great hustle play. It's nice to see glimpses of why he was such a big recruit for us the last two games. It's hard to predict his career but I think he's gonna be one of those guys who when he leaves you really appreciate his play a ton.

..or develop a move that looks like the step-back where he keeps his dribble to draw fouls on guys overplaying that move.. he can also pull that out very early in a big game when opponents are over-juiced.. get an early foul call on his man

BAC.. more smaller paragraphs
