Let's keep it short. Rutgers is back. This team today was the one we watched through February 4. This week in Chicago, just a short two game stay proved that Rutgers belongs in the NCAA tournament and that they can actually win games. The board was resigned to the fact that Michigan was going to beat us by double digits and we would limp into the NIT. It was not hard to argue against this. Rutgers sputtered three straight times at the RAC and the feeble performance at Northwestern indicated this team maybe just wasn't good enough. They lacked depth. They lacked offense. Most of all they lacked confidence. Somehow someway as I discussed yesterday, RU found it against Michigan. That didnt mean I feared a possible blowout vs Purdue. Today was still an enormous challenge against a projected one seed.

I do not think I ever sat through a game this year without yelling at the television at some point, that is until today. It was a joy to watch Rutgers play. They dominated a top 5 seed for stretches of this game. They made it hard for them to score. They managed to neutralize the player of the year. The Rutgers defense was elite. I was calm and at peace. Even when the game seemed to be slipping away. Rutgers was fighting its heart out, creating turnovers and extra scoring opportunities and even though they came up short on some of them. Things can change on a dime. Yesterday was an incredible turnaround but would it stick. Today was confirmation of what we saw yesterday. Back in the RU groove. with the mojo rising. Couldn't come at a better time. Headed to the NCAA tourney believing in themselves and believing they can knock off top schools.

Rutgers lost today simply because Purdue was just a little better. Purdue won because 3 guys...Gillis, Jenkins and Morton who collectively have not been big factors for them offensively stepped up and hit some big shots. The RU strategy to heavily pressure Edey was perfect. No shame in that and it paid off for much of the game. Rutgers taking the risk of letting another player beat them was worth it. Gillis is one thing. He can do this. He obviously took it upon himself to have himself a game with 20 points on 7-8 fg. and 9 boards. What was unexpected was Jenkins 4-4 fg, 12 points, throwing down daggers late in the shot clock with good defense. I mean yeah RU did let up some open 3s but this guy was covered. Just a key sequence of back to back to back threes by Purdue was enough to give them just enough cushion. A 50-46 lead. What followed was a pivotal stretch where RU blinked. Cliff picked up 2 fouls in 4 seconds. The first was not egregious but getting a 2nd one two seconds later was not smart. Sent him to the bench. Compounding the issue, Caleb just dumb foul 2 seconds later and Purdue went right after Wolf who was called for a foul. Without Cliff Ru was disorganized on offense and endured a 4 minute dry spell where Purdue went up 7. Against a team as good as Purdue, cannot have a dry spell like that. Cliff came back in and RU worked their asses off to keep pace. The press created turnovers for Caleb and Derek. RU was right there. Alas at 60-56 could not convert off a steal and got called for a foul. Maybe he would want that back to make a better decision. Cannot fault because this RU transformation has been about Derek and attacking. Rutgers is willing to take the mistakes because the reward is that RU has now opened its offense up and is no longer the stagnant bunch we saw for the past month.

Derek exponentially growing before our eyes. 5-16 fg, 6-8 ft 18 points, 3 steals. I mean yes 11-32 fg isnt a great percentage but its about the energy and new wrinkle he brings to the offense. The shots are there for him. He hit some. As a senior he will hit more of those. Do not fault him too much. They are going to not know how to scout for Derek in the NCAA tourney. Spencer 5-13 fg 13 points was real good at times. Surprised he had 13 because I felt he needed to take a few more, maybe some 3s. Paul was money early on hitting his first 3 but then turned more toward being distributor in the 2nd half. I think only 2 fg attempts in the first half but I would have like to see more. Cliff again great job on Edey as usual the case with him. Like that we didnt force Cliff the ball all the time...picked the spots, 4-10 fg is the best you can expect and Cliff worked for some nice moves. 8 boards and 3 blocks, cannot complain at all about Cliff except for needing to stop with the fouls that do not matter. Caleb again so good on D before fouling out and added some nice jumpers early in the 2nd half. Woolfolk continues to impress converting on 4 straight points before halftime when Cliff was sitting. Oskar gave minutes and hustles. He had a few open looks he could not hit down. Would have been nice. What is telling is that Oskar now is in the rotation over Hyatt. Writing on the wall there but I am pretty sure Aundre will get another shot next week to contribute. Even Jalen..no he shouldnt be shooting 3s but providing a bucket and a least minutes out there is all I need from.

Rebounding stats at 35-28 key here. Purdue got to the line more but to me officiating was a wash here. They let Ru get away with really physical play in the first half and even though there was a foul disparity in the first half I do not think it effected that first half. 2nd half less fouling but thats the half where the refs were all over the place inconsistent in play calls for both teams. Edey needed to get that flagrant called on him so that was good. Bardo can suck ass. He was unlistenable all game. Went from the best in the biz to a complete moron.

Have not felt this good after a loss in a long while. Rutgers should be dancing. At this writing its not 100% but it would be highway robbery if left out. Rutgers has the resume and they just answered any questions people had about the last month. An exciting week to come and do not get discourage if its Dayton in the end. This team is going to show to the country what its made of. Today was just a preview.

Bench guards Morton and Jenkins shoting 5-7 on threes, many late in the shot clock in the 2nd half really hurt us.

We also had many good looks near the hoop that didn’t go down late in the 2nd half.

This is a tough team that plays great defense and never gives up. I’m excited about what Simpson and Woolf bring to the table. The future is bright for us.

Nice recap - I felt similarly. Was so happy to see us play hard and well, including our 2nd game in a row of elite defense. If we had played like this against MN and NE, we'd be wondering if we were going to be an 8 or a 9 seed.

In your first paragaph, you said, "It was not hard to argue against this..." - I'm sure you meant, "It was hard to argue against this."

Yea this was a very enjoyable and promising loss. Simpson makes that bucket off the steal and we might have pulled this one out

The team has their MOJO back which is the most important thing about these last two games. The Simpson for Hyatt adjustment has this team back from the dead

Team effort rebounding has also really improved last two games

Back to back fouls on Cliff is horrific officiating and changed the outcome of the game. Bla bla we got some calls too. Doesn't matter. Not all calls are equal. This is a classic case of B1G officiating injecting themselves into the game unnecessarily and impacting the game. It's a consistent problem in this league and not just in Rutgers games

Yeah, the team has its mojo back. Especially given the emergence of Derek, it would be nice if we had a 6'7" high energy guy who's a defensive storm, a guy to rebound hard, and hit a few mid-range and 3s. It would be a lineup we didn't get to see this year.

BAC BAC BAC!

Foul discrepancy in the first half isn’t a factor? Huh?

Officiating was a wash??

Purdue was 19-27 from the line.
RU was 9-13 from the line.

Caleb fouling out.
Cliff in foul trouble.

Sorry but officiating a bigger factor than rebounding. Was the key to the game.

Rest of review is spot on.
Agree 100% reffing was horrible and Bardo is an effin ahole he pushes Woolfolk in the back not only once but twice on the same play the second time with two hands in the back that is a foul and Bardo says this is the big 10
Edy should have had 10 fouls rewatch the game look at how many times on rebounds he just either pushes our guys or goes over their back what a joke
If this game is reffed even close to fair we win!!

What was amazing to me was how elite our defense was today which I did not believe was possible without MAG. I have to rewatch the game as I taped it but my recollection now is that we only had 5 breakdowns on defense all game and unfortunately got burned on all 5. We left Willis wide open for his first 3 . We left Morton wide open for his first 3 and also his first of his 2 corner ones. We left Willis open with 10 seconds in the half as Oscar lost him. Paul was trying to double EDey and left Willis underneath when Edey was watching the whole time. He had to do that when Edey was not looking straight at him and we gave up the layup. The other time they did it was a smarter play. But that is it. Every other defensive possession was elite and that includes the 2 bombs late in the shot clock by Jenkins and the floater by Smith on the double curl. I am not going to say completely Purdue got lucky but they did. Those shots are made 25% of the time. All 3 were either going to be shot clock violations and instead were 8 points for Purdue , huge swing in a tight game.
We also gave up some critical offensive rebounds that we made the first stop and they scored. But overall an incredible effort.
We had plenty of chances to win and again Derek was terrific but he missed 3 layups or 5-6 footers and charged. Cam had a seam on a curl and threw it up off balance instead of setting and shooting. Then the missed free throws down the stretch. It was right there. We were toe to toe . Our press last 2-3 minutes really bothered them and the one call on Caleb when Jenkins just threw the pass up at half court and we were getting the steal was really a pivotal call against us as Caleb fouled out on his next tough call.

Derek has changed the offense and put the defense on its heels. Yesterday he penetrated and as others came over to help he dished back out to Cam for 2 threes. I wish he did that 2-3 more times today. No lob to Cliff and no pass out to Cam. Only 1 assist compared to 3-4 might have been the difference in the game. He looked to shoot almost every time , which one can argue they were not bad shots , but I think he could have slammed on the brakes , pumped faked and dished back out just a few more times. Otherwise he was terrific and was active defensively as well. Similarities between Geo’s breakout with Corey at MSG in tourney are inevitable. He grew up quick. His mentality is definitely all shooting scoring guard but getting a few more assists and setting up his teammates a few more times will make him really dangerous.

our offense flowed much better today and we were getting good looks and the ball didn’t stick as much. That happens when we moved paul off the ball .

Also I can’t remember when we used Cliff and Wolf to initiate the offense so much at the high post with dribble handoffs, zoom action and action off the ball. I said that wasn’t part of cliffs game because we haven’t used it much at all this season but it looked great today as we had a lot of off ball movement instead of plodding dribbling and standing around

The game plan was elite, 2 days in a row on both ends. We are getting looks and preventing looks or good shots from our opponents.

I am going to put together a post season thread that highlights the enormous gap in terms of Rivals talent rankings in terms of recruiting and Purdue.....if I include Jaden Ivey into the Purdue mix of recruiting over classes 2019 to 2022, Purdue has EIGHT 4 star players....and Zach Edey is actually not one of those 8 recruits, since he was a 3 star.

It's not to highlight the talent gap on paper, it can easily be argued that the difference ih the game was the production Purdue's bench provided, when we smothered Edey for extended periods of the game.

The emerging Simpson at least gives us a chance to look like a normal program again. I'm curious to see how this goes in the NCAAs and into next year. Same with Woolfolk as well.

I might be crazy…. But I would be happy if we ended up in NIT. Maybe it would humble this group. Can’t stand attitudes of Cliff, Paul and Caleb. Steve seems to be losing control of this team once Mag went down

Why would ending up in the NIT fix that issue? I’m confused

I’m starting to have doubts about Steve’s future here. The singing of Africa was all I needed to see he has no control over this locker room. Ace will decommit shortly and we will be back to eddie Jordan days
2 posts ever and these are them 🤣

Literally the all time worst member of the board. 2 for 2 on absolutely absurd takes

LOVED how we played the past 2 days - and even more today than yesterday because we were going up against a much more heralded team. We came out swinging, and swinging hard - they may have beat us but they were going to have to go through hell to do so! The way it looked like things were going 48 hours ago was leaving me with a bad taste in my mouth for the whole season. I don't know how the season will end, but no matter what I am proud of these guys and how they bounced back from the dead and gave it all they had these past 2 games. Can't help but root for a team like this!

+/- of starters was a combined +4
Bench was -30 somerhing
We unfortunately have significant depth issues - which became that much more magnified when Mag went out. I think Pike has a lot of work to do to get some of the excess baggage out, and bring some solid depth in.

I would think Hyatt would realize that there really isn’t a path for him to get PT next year.
Probably still some minutes for him, but if Pike is doing is job that should be decreased. But on the whole, yeah, I don't want him to come back.

He was a DNP 2nd half. Oskar has been taking Mags minutes. Easy to root for Oskar, but that is a terrible sign.

One thing to sit because Ron is ahead of you…..

As much as I hate to say it we really needed Hyatt's offense this year - that is a testament to how unbalanced this team was. I think Pike is well aware of what Hyatt is, but was handcuffed for most of the season because he had no choice. I think with him trusting Simpson more to get points, he's more comfortable sitting Hyatt.
